We were in Bay City for a goose hunt for 3 days in December and wound up eating here three times. Service was outstanding, portions were more than generous (especially for tired, hungry goose killers) and food was very fresh and tasty. Chips and hot sauce were plentiful and ice cream cone on the way out the door was the grand finale. I grew up in South Texas and know good mexican food. My buddies and I agreed this place was Top 3 of all time, for sure. We will be back, more likely for the enchiladas than the goose hunting. read more

Not good. Service was absolutely terrible. My husband had to get his own unsweetened tea after being served a sweet tea and waiting ten minutes. Our food was very bland. Stuffed shrimp avocado, street tacos and bean soup was nothing to brag about. The salsa was scorching hot when it was served which was very odd. I like this place. We have stopped for lunch and dinner and the food is terrific. Right off the highway, we discovered this a few years ago because of the full parking lot and it hasn't disappointed. Drinks look great but we have a couple hours to drive so it's tea only. read more

Stayed in town for a couple months for work and tried this place a few times. Each time was better than the last with excellent service, and good food. Would highly recommend their crawfish on Thursdays when in season, it was prepared a little different than what I was use to but it was still good. La Casonas in Bay City is not just great food it's great service. Walked in and was seated in the back. It was rather cold. My daughter had a jacket and blanket on. After talking to our waiter he gladly sat us outside. Great customer service. It speaks volumes of a company when they go the extra mile to service their customers and to do it with a smile. read more

Not a authentic Mexican restaurant. I always rate Mexican Restaurants by ordering Enchiladas, Tacos AlPastor and Horchata. The AlPastor has a weird flavor and the enchiladas were cold inside. They had no Horchata. If you like Tex-Mex food then go but I still give that a 3.5. But for the raza, no valla para allá, porque ni papas con huevos sirve. First time to go to this establishment and we will NOT be going back. First off it is crazy loud even though there weren't many people dining. It was so loud that the waiters had trouble hearing our orders. My wife had looked at the menu online since she could not join us and I would bring a meal back home for her. Well the menu online does not match what they have in house and they had no clue what I wanted. It might have helped it the waiter could understand English....or the waitress that he sent over to help afterwards. During the circus of them trying to figure out what I was saying our main waiter put in my daughter's and son's orders without taking mine. After the second waitress proved incompetent of taking an order in English she sent over the manager who finally told me that they do not honor the online menu. While she was telling me this my kid's food arrived so I watched while they ate and my wife and I had to find a better place for our meal. We come here every time we visit Matagorda Beach. Nice, clean family friendly restaurant with reasonable prices. I love the beef enchiladas with gravy and cheese. My daughter loves the free soft serve mini ice cream cones. The service is also fast and friendly. read more

We were in town for a wedding and noticed this place earlier in the day - decided to stop in for lunch without benefit of reading a review before hand (place was clean and well maintained on the outside, figured no worries for lunch). Wow!, the food and service were top notch. The portions were generous and we never had to wonder where our server was as the serving team seemed to anticipate that we were about to ask for something. If you're in town, this would be a go-to place for Tex-Mex. The lunch menu was very filling and satisfying (two of us ate very well for $30). read more

They have the best chicken soup I've ever tasted, it's the broth that's so yummy. I have to have a bowl of it when we eat there. I always have the fajitas and they are pretty good. I would like to try their shrimp but they don't peel them before cooking them. My husband says they make a great ribeye and cheese enchiladas. He isn't a fan of their chile con queso and wishes they would improve on it. Most of our friends love eating there so that's where we end up going for dinner. Awful drinks, food and service! The restaurant was very busy which is usually a sign that a place is good if it's full of people. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar, and the first problem was the amount of time we had to wait to get any attention. There were 2 bartenders and at times 1 or 2 other people would come to the bar to make a drink and leave. Restaurant 101: you have a bartender/server at the bar attending to those sitting at the bar counter, and you have another bartender making drinks for all the orders from the restaurant (at least when it's busy, if it's a slow night sure you just have 1 bartender taking care of orders from both sides). These 2 bartenders had good intentions but poor things were running around and completely overwhelmed trying to take care of bar counter customers AND all drink orders from the restaurant, and when they did approach us they kept saying "sorry for the wait". So we ordered 1 margarita on the rocks, 1 queso, 1 chimichanga and a single cheese enchilada. The house margarita was the pre-made mix that we can all buy from the store, needless to say nasty and costing us $5 for a glass. The queso was pretty good. The chimichanga was OK, but nothing worth talking about. The cheese enchilada was awful, came filled with queso and also smothered with queso on top and all over plate. I've never seen a cheese enchilada filled with queso. If that's what I'm going to get, then I can save $3 on that and just order tortillas and dip that into the $7 bowl of queso I had already ordered to eat with chips. Because the house margarita was nasty pre made mix, we asked about their "handmade margaritas" we saw on the menu. They said those were made from scratch at the time of order. So we got excited and decided to pay more for a better margarita, so we ordered a $7 handmade margarita. I did see the bartender making it from scratch, but still had my doubts. It was still gross, all you could taste was the watered down orange taste from the cointreau and grand marnier (she used both) and nothing else. I can drink a way better margarita at my house and definitely better food. We left there as fast as we could and went home to drink some beer after such a fiasco and $40 thrown away. Save your money and time for true margaritas and tex mex in cities like Houston and San Antonio. read more

Great food, wonderful service. I go for lunches and the occasional dinner, and I'm never disappointed. It's perfect for lunch because of how speedy everything comes out of the kitchen. Some of my favorites are the beef tacos al carbon, the chicken flautas, and the chimichanga. Their homemade soup is always so comforting and flavored perfectly. It's never overly salty, and you can really taste all the flavors. Really only the decent place to eat in town. You won't be disappointed. read more

We moved to Bay City about 3 years ago and we were taken to this restaurant by some friends. I was impressed by the service, it was and still is excellent. The food isn't bad either. My problem with this restaurant is its attention to detail and cleanliness. We agreed we would never go back to this restaurant due to its roach problem- We were seated at a window table with marble window sills. I went to put my purse in the window and noticed a glossy finish on the sill. I touched it and realized it was insecticide, then the smell followed. I just moved to another table and that was that, but it was disgusting. Another time, as we ate our dinner, we could see several (like a row of them) roach antennas descending from a framed out pass through window that went into the next dining room (our table was directly under that window. We all quickly moved our chairs to the end of the table and were so grossed out that we paid and left. Two years past and we wanted to go out after church. No other Mexican restaurant was open so we decided to give La Casona another try. Every thing was going well until I got to the end of my meal and found a server ticket in the lettuce under my food along with a piece of the carbon paper. My husband got so angry he showed the Manager and he said. "Oh, sorry." We paid our bill minus the food with a dirty server ticket, so nice of them, and left. I feel that if the attention to detail cannot be met on the food plate itself, what does the kitchen look like and what is the customer getting. If those things don't bother you, then this place is for you, if not staying at home may be a better option. read more
