    Birria tacos

Pretty solid experience from Uber eats which I rarely order through. Solid Birria tacos and consume. Nachos were perfectly shareable. Burrito ample size, dry not a platter though...wrapped in foil with red and green sauce on the side

Solid tacos in Fishtown - with inflation they're more than I usually like to spend on tacos but you definitely feel like your moneys worth because they are PACKED. The shrimp was literally falling out of the taco because it was so stuffed. I thought 3 tacos wouldn't be enough for me but I was stuffffed. My hub's burrito had a bit less meat than we would have liked. Taste wise I really enjoyed the shrimp and the burrito was solid but not amazing. Chips and guac were also pretty good, solid but not amazing. It's not an authentic Mexican place so there were some details that made it feel more Tex/mex e.g. the cheese in the burrito or tomatoes/pico on the taco. Overall not the best tacos we've ever had but a solid place if you're looking for a fix.

Got the birria tacos and chips w/ guac for take out yesterday. Birria: Holy moly when you dip it in the broth? My tastebuds sing in delicious savory oily harmony. You will definitely need to soak the taco in the broth because the meat is really dry. Chips w/ guac: Definitely not enough guac for the amount chips they provide. And maybe it's their style but the tomato and onion were huge chunks in the dip.... The guac was quite disappointing for me... Their take-out preparation and wait time is very neat, organized, and fast!

This is it. Birria tacos, hands down, best thing on the menu. A little pricey, but you're in Philly, what do you expect! Dip one of these bad boys in and enjoy your delicious meal. Don't forget some napkins.

Fantastic spot for tacos in Philly! Came here with my friend and we both had the birria tacos and they were amazing! The broth was perfect and the sauces on the side were great. Definitely worth checking out and trying the menu!

Dude go try these tacos. They were so good. I tried taco with just the corn tortilla and the carnitas no sauce or anything and could've ate them all like that. The lime and sauces just made it better, the red sauce has a tiny little kick to it (I don't really like spicy). My steak quesadilla also tasted great! The meat inside both the taco and quesadilla are super flavorful. I will definitely be back to try some more and this will most likely go to 5 stars.

Got the carnitas tacos and nachos. The carnitas were seasoned so well that I didn't need any sauce but of course I still added tomatillo sauce. The tortillas on the tacos were corn based but soft and not grainy. The nachos were freshly made and really good. Kudos to the staff because there was a bit of a wait but the were friendly and professional. I'm definitely coming back to try other things on the menu.

Went to their weekend "event" where they only served Birria Tacos and Elote. While the food was ok it was a nightmare trying to actually get the food. I feel you shouldn't advertise a special event due to an increase in demand for a couple of popular products then do nothing to mitigate said increased demand. A 15 minute wait turned into an hour, tickets were being completed out of order (the first person in line was 5th or 6th served), an incorrect order was given out to someone who was towards the mid-back of the original line. So not only did they get an incorrect order before everyone else in front of them but their actual order was also done first. Some people asked for a refund and some who stuck around were repeatedly told 15 more minutes. As for the food it was OK. The elote was ice cold but the tacos were steaming hot. I understand Birria tacos are a specialty, but I could have gone to South Philly to a couple of other restaurants who serve them and still had been back sooner than waiting here at the food truck. I'm sure on a regular day things are less chaotic, but I can only judge based off my visit which comes down to the food and the experience. Food was good for the most part, the experience was awful due to how unorganized things were. If I go back it'll be during the week and I'll give a fair update.

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

Good: old fashioned, tri-mix of guac (liked the truffle one), steak tacos. Not so good:coco tartare app, I thought most of the other tacos were tried were very okay for the price and would not recommend (shrimp, pastor (one of my least favorite versions of pastor), one with habaenro (not spicy at all). Would have enjoyed some actual spicy salsa to go with it. Overall, I sadly can't really recommend it.

Honestly El Rey is great!…read more As a Los Angeles native, Mexican food is always a "not as good as California" affair, and with that bar, it's hard to find anything that holds a candle. But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! I hadn't been to El Rey in years, but we scored last-minute Valentine's reservations and WOW. The vibe was lively, warm, and perfect for a fun night out. - Let's talk about these STEAK TACOS . Perfectly seasoned, tender, flavorful -- the kind of bite that makes you close your eyes for a second. They were so good I came back two days later just for them. That's not a craving... that's infatuation. - The Chayote Salad completely surprised me. Fresh, bright, and paired with their homemade hot sauce? My palate was awakened. I even brought it home (with dressing and hot sauce on the side) and it still hit! Speaking of heat -- if you love spicy food, ASK for their homemade hot sauce. It's bold, fiery, and addictive. I genuinely want a bottle for home. Service? 10/10. From the manager to the hosts to the bartender -- everyone was kind, attentive, and patient. They even remembered me from Valentine's Day, which says everything about how they treat their guests. Bathroom Check: Clean? Yes. Cute ambiance? Yes. Great mirror for photos? Absolutely. There were booths, tables and bar seating available with Wonder Years playing on a few TVs with warm lighting and the incandescent Christmas lights that are reminiscent of Grandma's house (bonus points for nostalgia!) I requested a booth and she promptly sat me. She brought me water, menus and explained the specials to me. As I perused the menu, I was overwhelmed with the options available to me. I ultimately landed on one of the dinner specials (Cabernet braised brisket with a side of carrots & buttery mashed potatoes), chips & salsa and a Paloma. Chips landed first and while both salsas were fresh, I still felt the need to add salt. (Everyone's palate is different) Food & drink arrived simultaneously. Paloma was made strong but tasted more like a classic margarita as opposed to the tang of grapefruit that comes with a Paloma. Still good! The food was essentially cold & looked like it had been sitting for awhile being served to me but all the flavors were there. The brisket fell apart, I didn't even need a knife to cut it. The carrots were tender and the mashed potatoes were buttery. I would 1000% go back for the drinks and service, however I may get something different on the menu.
