My family and I have supported this place but after today i will not. I was parked at this location for 45 minutes to enroll my son in vista west and they towed my car. Their towing company is literally down the road from them and the school stated that they wait for people to park there so they can have their car towed. I feel schemed to have to pay $325 to get my car back. I understand it's private property but the fact that it's towed down the street seems crooked. read more

Good ole fashioned meat market with excellent customer service. The owner and his staff are always really welcoming and greet you when you walk in. They have an excellent selection and quality of meats especially their diced up meat for tacos i especially love their chicken al pastor. They also sell salsa , beans , rice and a limited amount of produce to get your cook out started right. On this day i stopped by to pick up some of their shrimp ceviche that I've been eyeing for some time. It was really good I highly recommend it , really fresh and perfectly seasoned with salt. I picked up a bottle of hot sauce on their shelf that added the perfect amount of heat that I needed and they had crackers and tostadas to accompany it. This place is still kinda of a hidden gem it's not ever to busy in there which I like I'm always in and out quick. Usually we have no issues with this establishment but I am disappointed today. I went in and asked for asada and was given mince taco meat. I just wanted regular asada to bbq on a charcoal grill. I never said anything about minced. Now we're scrambling to figure out how we are going to prepare it after lighting the charcoal bbq grill. We come here because they have my boyfriend's favorite salsa, but I probably won't go by myself again that way this doesn't happen again. Usually we are happy with the quality and flavor of the meat and salsas we get. Once in awhile we have a disappointing day where something wasn't the quality we expected. I'm still giving 4/5 stars because the employees are always courteous and welcoming. We would recommend the molcajete salsa, cucumber salsa, guacamole salsa, chicken and asada meat. read more

This was first visit. Had recently tried their Ceviche via a friend. The best! (Shrimp). Wanted more. Store was clean. Quaint. No off putting odor, A fair amount of dry goods but oddly, not a lot of meats, as it's called a "Meat market". I asked when the Ceviche was made, no response. A bit uneasy about that. Several employees working about behind meat counter. They appeared to be in a cheery, laughing conversation, yet I got the impression that I was interrupting and had somehow changed their atmosphere. Again, uneasy. The young man behind meat counter was not rude but was dry, unfriendly in tone. A young woman came from behind meat counter to assist me with checkout. I appreciated her cleanliness and wiping down of checkout area. She was not rude in tone but like the young man, of service, but not warm nor cordial. I purchased 1.5 lbs of Shrimp Ceviche - paid about $23.00. Not sure if that's competitive or excessive, but their ceviche is VERY GOOD!! Cleanliness is of utmost importance to me, and their store seems so. Product/Food quality and taste is paramount-the Ceviche definitely meets that expectation. It was our mistake not to catch it before leaving, so this is a warning if anyone plans to go there. Look at your meat tags. They charged this item as shrimp ceviche at $9.99/lb. I'm not sure if you can see clearly through the bag in the photo, but what we requested AND RECEIVED is Chicken Taco Meat. Nowhere near the same price. Its small , i went to the meat side & saw the price for carne asada was $4 cheaper then La carreta meat market , i looked and made sure it was not brown lol . & it wasn't. The carnicero was nice, respectful and helpful. The disappointment was the Lady who helped me at the cashier. She was so rude & didnt even greet me & its such a shame when raza acts that way. We've been coming to La Chuleta for years. They have always been so kind and helpful when we don't really know what we were looking for. Their meats are really good and we always pick up some of the prepared rice and ceviche. Today the butcher took his time to cut four slices of sirloin for sandwiches. Keeping this review short. Ive been here before and those that help you select your meat are pretty cool and nice. But what I learned today is how much meat at a small family Meat Market cost. I came by to buy ranchera meat any cost me $14.99 a pound!!!! I would never pay that much for a pound of meat but because I made a promise to buy some I bought it. Not sure why I never reviewed this meat market, but here goes. They are a small locally-owned market, but provide some of the of the best and freshest meat in town! I come here if I need to get some quick Mexican food items and they have saved my butt several times. The owner here is super friendly and very helpful. It also helps that I speak Spanish, but that is beside the point. I recommend if you get meat, to get the espaldilla (shoulder) or ranchera (flank steak) as its one of the best I have had in town. I usually don't get it marinated, as I marinate the meat when I get home, but their marinade is also quite good if you want some bomb carne asada in a hurry. I also MUST say that their ceviche is THE best in town... WOW! It tastes super authentic and like something my parents would make. If you love ceviche, please come here! It's worth the drive alone! Soooo good! I will end this review by saying that La Chuleta is one of my favorite meat markets in town. They have some of the freshest meat available and THE best ceviche in town. One word. Ceviche. Seriously Yelpers, some of the, if not the best Ceviche I've ever had. It really is that good. The Spicy Carne Asada at La Chuleta is off the hook! Throw a couple pounds on the grill, along with some tortillas and some good salsa, and you can too become the BBQ MVP. It's gotten to the point when we have family and friends visiting from out of town and were going to be staying in at home enjoying some adult beverages, I'm heading to La Chuleta for some ceviche and spicy asada. I just recently made another discovery at this meat market that has me drooling as I type on this computer. Chicken Pastor. Yes you heard it right. I always thought Pastor was a type of meat, but apparently its a type of method the meat is prepared and seasoned. Grab a couple pounds of this stuff and get to cooking! Really good stuff. One of the highlights of La Chuleta is the pricing. Very affordable for delicious cuts of meat. Staff are always friendly, helpful, and courteous. Another highlight is that La Chuleta offers other Mexican products in-store. If you need some Tapatio or want to play some Mexican lottery, look no further. I've been shopping here for my meat for at least two years now. I know very little about red meat, either purchasing or cooking it, so back in 2010 I consulted a friend who used to be a butcher, and now does some of the most amazing barbeque catering, and asked him where I could purchase really good cuts of meat inexpensively. He's lived in Arvin and Bakersfield pretty much all his life and seems to know where to find anything. Seriously, he's like his own redneck Yelp.com of all things Bakersfield. I can't tell you how many times I've called him about where to find certain things and he not only tells me where to go, he tells me to ask for the manager, or owner, or department head by name and to name drop his name. Every time I follow this advice I either get a good deal, am treated like royalty, or both. Anyway, he told me that this little hole in the wall carniceria on Rosedale Highway called La Chuleta Meat Market. He said not to be concerned about the looks of the place. He assured me that everything behind the meat counter was kept very clean and was in tip top shape. He said that their cuts of red meat were top quality and that I was really missing out if I didn't try their preseasoned chicken taco meat. I went down there with and had to agree, It certainly looks like a little hole in the wall place but it is clean and tidy and has a decent selection for a place its size. They carry other Mexican grocery items too, basically a Hispanic oriented convenience store with a butchering shop in the back. This is a great place to pick up good quality meat at a low price. Our favorite (my mom, my brother, and I) is the taco chicken meat that comes pre-seasoned by the pound. It is very flavorful and cooks up beautifully moist with very little grease! It is tender and turns the most beautiful color when cooked, possibly turmeric in the marinade? I'm not entirely sure, but it's amazing. Seriously, trust me on this one. There used to be a restaurant in a nearby building that also used the La Chuleta name and I had originally posted my review of the butcher shop under that account. That restaurant closed long ago and there is a new tenant in that space so I decided it was time that La Chuleta Meat Market had a Yelp profile of its own. I'm new to this place I've only gone a couple of times and I really liked their meat and their ceviche but today I decided to give them one star because I went and saw a couple of roaches that came out from under one of the refrigerators and ran towards where the meat was. What a great find and random stop this was! Lots of amazing selection including different meat cuts, dry goods, spices, fresh farm eggs, tortillas, cheese, etc! Friendly service to boot! We just went in to look but ended up leaving with a bag full of goodies plus the eggs. Prices very affordable for what you get. I love that they make their pico de gallo with habanero peppers so, more spicy than the norm! This is the hottest fresh salsa type item that they sell. Anything you would want for your tacos or enchiladas are here including ground pork, chicken, carne asada.. I also saw some beautiful fresh rib-eyes that were selling quite well and my fave - t-bones! I have to also recommend the queso fresco. And the fish and shrimp ceviche that we were lucky enough to try. FRESH! The steady stream of happy customers seen here says something! This little market has very good meats as well as some home made Mexican type foods. I like to come here and buy everything for either tacos or burritos. They have it all marinated meats (beef asada, pollo,maybe others). Also fresh tortillas, salsas, chopped onion and cilantro, grated cheese, probably everything you need. I prefer doing the shopping here because it is a one stop spot. The shrimp ceviche is very good as are the steaks and other cuts of beef. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Have been buying meat from this place as far back as i can remember, showed up 5 mins before they closed couple walks out i ask if they're still open they replied yes. As im helping my disabled son out along with my other 2 year old the lady walks out sees us in there disabled parking no one else in there parking lot at this moment but us. This mom and pop grocery store has been my go-to place for taco meat for several years now. The prepared taco meat in beef, spicy chicken, and al pastor have always been a hit when I've made tacos. I usually need 10+ pounds, so I call ahead to get the meat prepared and packaged by the time I get there. It's a tiny place, but they have a full service meat counter and a few groceries here and there. I usually load up a box with tortillas, salsa, and onions to take home to grill. The ceviche they serve here is another favorite of mine. I'll swing by here for a pound or two when I don't feel like cooking dinner.
