So we decided to try this place because it had 4.4 stars are reviews were decent. Mind you SoCal girl here so when I ordered the chicharron with guacamole I expected REAL chicharron and guacamole. The chips were those fake ones out of the bag and the guacamole was some premade packaged stuff. Highly disappointed. Ordered the birria tacos. Was really hoping this place was more authentic. The meat was tender but no real flavor. Red onion instead of white which throws off the flavor, not 100% sure but tasted like mozzarella cheese vs a Oaxaca cheese. Came here on an early Sunday afternoon I have never dined in here. I've only had food to go. My sister is a big fan of this place and did say it's changed quite a bit since she's been there and the renovations look nice. I had a Cadillac margarita with tajin on the rim it was really good. You can tell they make their own mix and I must say it was strong. My sister ordered the queso for the appetizer I wouldn't get it again. It was kind of watery. We both ordered birria tacos. She said they' weren't as good as past visits. They were a little dry this time and I've definitely had better but it was still good to me. My family and I love TJ birria tacos! We are returning customers and if it weren't for the distance we would be back more often. Birriadillas and birria ramen are our go to's. Space isn't too big or small, no outdoor seating, fast and good service. You order first then go sit down. Food is on a tray and you out tray up as you finish. Great for them to expand the space but at what cost? The food and salsa quality went down. Puddles of OIL, overflowing from the plates, quesadillas were left as is. Also in what world are these plates functional??? Burritos are no longer grilled. Salsa containers changed and have no flavor whatsoever. The increased prices were insane. The birria itself was good (I wasn't absolutely wild about it, but still solid), but what really stood out for me were the aguas frescas. I had the Jamaica and it was soooo refreshing, and my husband's watermelon agua was straight-up fire. The vibe here is fast-paced, almost like Mexican fast food in the best way possible. I'm a sucker for trendy options, so I ordered this birria ramen combo that I recalled seeing on social media. Located on Durham in the Northern Heights, TJ Birria Y Mas comes pretty highly rated. There is parking right in front, which is nice. Service is minimal; you order food at the front and get your food Torchy's style. The ambiance inside is very casual; think Chipotle. Their menu is written on the wall; I got the sampler of sorts featuring birria. Also got an order of chilaquiles for the table. The chilaquiles and chips were a bit underwhelming; the sauces were bland and the chips were slightly stale and the dish was lacking flavor. The birria combo sampler was pretty solid; the meat was well cooked, the quesadilla had quality cheese and the extra onions and cilantro on the side were a nice add. Overall, a pretty solid spot, and I haven't tried most of their menu, including their street tacos. Stick with the main hitters and avoid the appetizers and brunch items. read more

I came here craving the birriadillas after a long week. It was a night for staying in so I got my food takeout. Although I came close to closing, they seemed eager to serve me. The cashier even made some fun conversation as she was taking my order. The wait was short, only about ten minutes, and the food smelled sooo good. The birriadillas are chock full of flavorful birria and oodles of cheese. I will say that the tortilla was a bit soggy by the time I got home but that was probably unavoidable. The consommé was delicious, so flavorful and yummy. Of course the cilantro and chopped onion added a great flavor to the birriadillas. I have been coming here for a while now and even have left an amazing review. They have recently changed their menu and prices to what I feel is very unfair. The food is great but the fact that the food is almost double the price for less is ridiculous. Claiming you're adding more meat and cheese to a single taco and that being your reasoning to change the order from 4 birria tacos to 3 for double the price is ridiculous; and that's just one of many examples. I even asked if there was a change in owners but nope, same owner trying to take advantage of the area. Sadly, I can't see myself coming here ever again. Time to find a new place. read more

Why have I not tried this place sooner? I was absolutely ravenous today and definitely hungover, so I really needed some good Mexican food to bring me back to life. I happened go find this place while scrolling through the uber eats app, and thank goodness I found it. I ordered the burrito, street tacos, rice, and beans. Mannnn they knocked it out of the park. Went to go study with my friend and we started the day with lunch at TJ Birria y Mas at their location in the heights. Parking can be a little tricky since they don't have that many spots but they apparently have another lot across the street. The staff were very nice and allowed us to sample their Birria meat and horchata before ordering. My friend got their birriadilla con consume and I got the taco combo, which comes with 2 birriadillas and 3 mini tacos. We also got charro beans and elotes, and I also added avocado on the side. My friend got the Mexican coke and I got a cup of horchata, and we also tried their chocoflan for dessert. Everything we had was pretty good. The birriadillas went well with the consume which was really hearty. The shredded beef was tender and mixed up with the melted cheese. They also gave us a red and green salsa. The red salsa tastes more like a spiced tomato sauce than a salsa but the green one was good. For my mini tacos, I got 2 with steak and 1 with al pastor, I liked the ones with steak more. I added my avocado into these tacos and they actually give you a lot of avocado for the price you're paying. The sides weren't anything crazy but they weren't bad. I liked how the horchata is not too overpowering in its cinnamon flavor. The chocoflan felt like the chocolate cake and flan did not go well together but I still ate it up. I remember them having a little food cart at the beginning and now they have their own store fronts! They have not disappointed once! Same consistency with flavors and the quantity. Cook to order, always fresh. They have a more options then just your typical Taco's de Birria. The most popular is their "Birriadillas" 4 corn tacos with their beef birria with shredded cheese. You get a side of consome & veggies (onion, cilantro, & lime). I've had their pastor street tacos, beef torta, and my favorite is their Papa Birria. The papa birria is mashed potato with cheese, birria, veggies (onions & cilantro), sour cream and consome. I always ask for extra consome because as you mix it definitely soaks it all up. With each dish they have two homemade salsas, one which is red and the other is green. Green has always been my favorite but both are as good! Lastly, I always get a Jarito preparado which is grapefruit soda served with chamoy, tajin, and a tamarindo stick. They always have a different agua frescas daily. Very refreshing!
