After reading all the review we were hesitant to come for an early Mother's Day. I called and easily made a reservation for Saturday AM and we were promptly seated. Waters were served as we sat and a nice appetizer was provided. Our server was prompt, answered questions in Spanish and English, checked in frequently and made sure we were doing good the whole time. Food came soon after we ordered and was hot and absolutely delicious. The inside decor and even cups etc were all beautiful and authentic looking. My grandmother said the flavors took her back to the small town she grew up in, in Mexico. Don't let the reviews deter you. I'm so happy we took the chance. Gave this place a shot despite low reviews- from my skim of all the reviews it looks like alot of the reviews were focused on long wait times perhaps when they first opened, bad staff service / understaffing problems. Some were how bland the food was as well. Went on a saturday afternoon and it was pretty dead. Granted, this restaraunt targets more of a breakfast / brunch & coffee/ pastries audience, it's never a great sign. Very large menu. No staffing/ service problems from when my friends and I went. Moving onto food - you get free tosadas with sour cream, some kind of salsa, and cheese Carailljo - not the best not the worst, expensive at $14 that I didn't think was worth Chilaquiles Bandera ($14) - supposedly their most popular chilaquiles dish on the menu. Comes with 3 sauces, coloraos, de la Sierra, and verdis. - added on the chicken fajita ($6). Bland, honestly can't believe how bland the chicken fajita was. Wish they gave a bit more meat for the price but perhaps I'm spoiled from other great Mexican restaraunts in the city. Refried beans quite bland as well. Presentation of dish was great. Out of the 3 sauces I think the Verdis was the best IMO Interior design is amazing, really loved their space. Since we went later in the day not many pastries were available from my quick glance. Coffee beans are apparently sourced from Tenfold Coffee Roasters so thats a plus in my book. They add a 3% credit card charge. Never mentioned anywhere on menu / server. I only knew about it from skimming reviews before hand but still gave this restaraunt a shot. I have almost never seen a "credit card" surcharge anywhere else in the city and this includes Chinatown so this is pretty laughable IMO. Parking is limited if it gets busy but I'm sure you can street park a block or two away from what I saw. Overall I wouldnt come back personally. I was excited to try this restaurant after seeing an Instagram story that made it look perfect, highlighting only the positives and the vibe. Well, as with social media and TikTok, you can't always believe everything. Unfortunately, this restaurant disappointed both me and my husband. Let me start with the pros: the environment and vibe is nice. They did a great job with the decor and setup. The coffees were flavorful, and the orange juice was good. Now, the cons: the restaurant opens at 10 a.m., and we arrived 10 minutes early on a sunday, we found a line already waiting. Again, the restaurant opens at 10am but the doors didn't open until 10:07 a.m. Once seated, we waited and waited for someone to greet us and take our drink orders--30 minutes passed before I had to get up and speak to the host. She then took our drink orders, but the drinks took another 30 minutes to arrive. We never saw the server for our table. After waiting again and getting someone else's attention, we finally placed our food order, but we didn't get our plates until 12:15 p.m., even though we had been there since 10:07 when they opened their doors. You can literally feel the tension of others in the restaurant while waiting for someone to help because the service was horrible! By the time our food arrived, we were ready to leave. The portion sizes were okay. At the end, when we asked for the check, we waited another 30 minutes because they were trying to figure out our order since we didn't not get a proper server. One of the staff even asked, "Who took your order and who brought your food?"--which was literally random people. Would I recommend this place? Ahhh I wanted to like this place so much. It's beautiful inside, the food is authentic Mexican (well they claim to be, I mean I'm not Mexican so can't confirm) and it overall looks like this restaurant would have been great if it were not for the horrible service. Unfortunately, we came on my sister's birthday. Yes, my chef sister's birthday and she was so excited to try this place out. However, we did not leave at all happy. Here's everything that went wrong in the 3 HOURS we spent being here: -parking is very small and limited and there was absolutely no way I was going to get a parking there. Ever. To this day. My sister was the first one there and she was looking for parking for at least 15 minutes. There is street parking and there's an abandoned building with parking across the street that didn't have any signs to not park there so we risked it and well, it didn't get towed. -when I asked the "server" if we were fine to park where we did, she looked unsure and sorta shrugged and said yes it was fine. She took our drink orders and then we never saw her again. -We had no actual server the entire time we were there. Twice we asked people to take our orders and they would not take it and try to find someone else. The owner or manager also came up to us at one point to take our order and explained they had barely any staff that day. And this is why they get the second star, because the staff that was there definitely were hustling. Just not at our table. -the food came an hour late. This is after we waited an hour for some server ANY server to come and take our order!! Also, one of our friends that arrived later than us, never got their drink. We asked for more tostadas while we waited and we never got that too even though they said said they would happily bring more. -I did not get the correct order (I had ordered chicken with my chilaquiles which was quite an up charge so I'm surprised they didn't remember it) but the true tragedy was my sister, THE BIRTHDAY GIRL, had received a cold plate of chilaquiles. All in all, it was a pretty bad experience which sucks because it has so much potential from how beautiful the restaurant is and thoughtfully curated the menu is but it's clear they were not ready for opening. read more

Food bandera chilaquiles and coffee were delicious. Coffee is from a local roaster called Tenfold. Plenty of servers and staff. Very polite. Restrooms clean. Decor of restaurant including a wall from their area of Mexico at the entrance nicely presented. ---- We got in just when they opened the door at 10am, however there quickly was a long wait line. I saw people leave due to the wait, however the food is worth it. ----- Suggestions: Some staff should be dedicated to refilling coffees and water vs just picking up dishes from tables. They need different coffee dispensers in order to be quicker. They are using what looked like thermos type dispensers which they have to pump vs pouring. The coffee in my opinion should be slightly larger. Slightly larger coffee mugs could help staff, because they wouldn't have to return so many times to refill. Salt and pepper dispenser should be at all tables. Parking is limited and a tight squeeze when exiting. Again food was great and worth the wait! Staff were friendly! read more

The owner/manager walked up to us and apologized in advance and stated he was short staffed with his servers and bartender. We mentioned it was ok, that we would be patient. After waiting 20 min we were seated and a server came to take our order. We ordered our drinks first, then we ordered our entrees. Well after waiting another 20 min for our meals we hadn't received our drinks yet. We asked for water a couple of times and we didnt receive water from our server. We flagged down this other lady and asked her for water. She brought us water. The had good flavor but it was cold. Our check came- the bill was 140.07. We placed 1 credit card and $60 in cash. The server came to take the bill and she processed it AND...took the liberty of giving herself the $60 as her tip and charging the credit card for the full amount!! How could she think she deserved a $60 tip!? She barely did anything. They were so busy and understaffed we just wanted to leave. We knew if we had her fix the error it would take a lot longer. Like girl you didn't deserve it but maybe you needed it more than us. Service bad, ripped us off and The chilaquiles had good flavor but were just cold. read more

I know Berry Hill used to be here so tell me why I thought this was this kind of place before even researching it. This is a full on restaurant with delicious coffee bar, fresh baked pastries, and some IG worthy decorations. We all got the chilaquiles of a different variety and they were delicious. It is extra to add meat FYI. We got complimentary hand assembled stone ground tortillas and toppings for the-delicious! And then the baked cheese was out of this world too. The coffee with the coconut crème was on point. Overall really great but also be ready for European style service which is nice because you can sit and chat and not feel rushed. Parking was good but we also went on a Monday during lunch. One of the owners came over to greet us and honestly I felt like we were having lunch in someone's fancy dining room in their house. Female manager walking around checking in on tables willing to get drink refills herself, inserting into service without chastising staff when something is needed. Mole enchiladas featured flavorful chicken and perfectly textured rolled tortillas however the sauce lacked a depth of flavor. This was deceiving as the color of the sauce was there but the flavor could be built more. The chilaquiles which are the reason for our visit were flavorful due to the rich sauces. The portion lacked substance as the guests at our table that ordered were hungry again an hour later. The strawberry mimosa juice was fresh and made the simple mimosa the star of the meal. Atmosphere was visually very well presented, the staff all looked uniformed and nice, but the random animal sounds over the load speaker took us out of the dining experience. The starter tostadas were very well done and very tasty. The menu was very unhelpful and with a non attentive waiter basically useless. "Just like grandma used to make" gives me nothing about what the flavor or what's included. I got the virdis ones and they were very good, but I would avoid the $7 chicken add on as it was lacking. Overall for a $50 breakfast for 2 with no alcohol at all and a credit card fee I would say this is the last time I come here. We tried Los Chilaquiles and overall, definitely worth it! The food felt very authentic, the prices were reasonable, and you could tell a lot of items are made in-house. Our server was attentive without being overbearing, which made the experience even better. My husband ordered the bandera chilaquiles, and they were a standout. The red sauce was his favorite, super flavorful, while the yellow/white had a bit more kick in my opinion. I went with the poblano chilaquiles, which leaned slightly on the sweeter side, but adding the salsa they bring out at the start balanced it out perfectly. The busboy warned us the food might be spicy, but as a Latina... it really wasn't For drinks, I had the café Puerto Vallarta as-is. It was definitely on the sweeter side, but tasted natural, not that artificial sweetness you sometimes get. We also tried a red concha, and it was so good! My husband loved it, and I agree. HEADS UP!! I was told weekends are with reservations only unless you sit at bar. So don't get upset if you go and not seated immediately or at all. Could be for this day only but I just sat at bar and got served by Andre's (guy with piercing on lower lip). Yes he was busy trying to attend everyone but he made sure you were good. Recommended pretty good choices on food and margaritas. Food was great and mariachi they had playing was good. I'll break my review into three sections - Arrival: Bad from the start. I made a reservation days prior. When we arrived, I clearly spoke and let the hostess know my full name and that I had a reservation for the patio. She then wrote my name in the reservation book and told me it would be 25 mins.... "Is this ok?" I said no, I had a reservation. Then she led me to the inside table where she had seated some of our party. I told her I made a reservation for the patio because we have a dog. And she told me that's ok and just to sit inside. I had to tell her again... I have a dog we need to sit on the patio. We then moved to the patio. The communication skills of the staff are subpar. The restaurant was a madhouse and no one else was on the patio. There was enough staff to accommodate everyone there. Food: wile the food was amazing for the most part...much of it was put in wrong to the kitchen. For starters- it took an hour to get brunch after ordering . We decided they had forgot our order after a while. At least 6 people came out and saw our table had no food then ran back into the restaurant looking concerned during this time. We must have had at least 3 people wait on us. I'm not even sure who our main server was since we had so many. We never got several items we asked for multiple times. My partners "truffle fries" came out as a side plate of maybe a total of 10 fries that looked like a kids portion . They were the bagged fry type and were not truffle fries. We sent them back and made sure we were not charged. The ribeye tacos that were 10$ per piece were completely fatty and full of gristle. The presentation was bad. We also sent that back. I loved the salsa and my rancheros plate it was excellent. However, it didn't make up for the haphazard service. The final: The manager was sent out and she talked us up for several minutes to try and smooth over the situation. After all the blabbing (as she walked back inside) she asked "can I get you anything" ...we said yes we never received a few items we had asked for. At that point, she literally told us "my English is bad I can't understand"! How bizarre and what a lie. You literally just spoke English to us for 5 minutes before leaving the table. She clearly basically just didn't want to be bothered. I would try this place once more in a few months to see if they have their act together. if they don't, I would NEVER go again. It's a shame because they have a great patio and the facilities are lovely. This place needs to decide what it actually wants to be: If this was a cheap neighborhood taqueria, I would accept this type of experience. If it wants to be what it's trying to present itself as (an upscale Mexican restaurant) in a gentrified area, then it needs a lot of work. read more

I'm giving this place a 3 for mixed emotions -- hear me out. My wife and I decided to try Los Chilaquiles because we love café de olla and chilaquiles, and both are pretty hard to find in HTX. Unfortunately... we didn't even get to eat. When we arrived, there was a huge line outside. People were just standing there unsure if it was to put your name down or if it was the actual waitlist. A family got in line ahead of us, so I went inside to check. The front desk person -- who was polite despite how tense and busy it was -- took my name down. I went back out and explained to the people in front of us that there was a list inside. They rolled their eyes and went in to put their names down anyway. We figured it might be faster to just order to-go. While waiting for our café de olla, several patrons walked out saying, "This isn't worth your time." That was discouraging, but we still wanted to give them a chance. After getting our coffee, we waited about 40 minutes with no food. Another customer passed by clearly upset and said they'd been served beers but waited three hours for food before finally canceling. That was the final straw for us. I decided to cancel our order. At first they said it was coming up next, but about five minutes later the manager came out, apologized, and offered a full refund. She explained they had no-shows in the kitchen, which put them way behind. With that said, I think they deserve a second chance -- but they really need to get it together or they won't last. Oh, and the café de olla was good... just not great. read more

We ate at the bar on Friday night. Our bartender Dee, was friendly and knowledgeable. The friendly owner came over and told us about the restaurant. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The restaurant vibe felt like we were in an neighborhood cafe in Mexico. The margarita was great, made with agave and fresh ingredients. The owner is extremely disrespectful and has no idea how to treat customers or staff. The management is a complete mess--unorganized, unprofessional, and honestly the worst I've ever experienced. The only decent thing about this establishment is the employees, who are clearly working hard and doing their best. BEFORE I decided to leave this review I messaged their Instagram as soon as I left the establishment.. My message was read and no reply was given, that to me just shows they don't care about your experience.. I personally won't be returning!!! Went today to try this place out and First & foremost. Great bartender.. gentlemen with under lip piercing.. super friendly and very detailed.. but he is a bit slow paced & tbh he should really attend the people at the bar before the waitress well. As a bartender and prior waitress, it's always been understood that a bartender attends his bar before waitresses as the people at the bar are watching him.. took him about 15 min to do 3 casuelas for 3 ladies at the bar and they were not very happy about the wait as he had to stop multiple times to help the staff instead of what he was originally doing FIRST. They should also have somewhere to put the dirty cups and not let them pile up at the bar! Looks extremely dirty & very unprofessional for a brand new establishment. I personally had to sit next to cups that were being stacked and left by I'm assuming the bussers.. and it wasn't 1/3 cups.. like 20/30 at a time. 2nd I order the Toro de Lidia Chilaquiles... spice level 5... it tasted like straight tomato.. I even mentioned it to the staff it was not spicy & was told it says that to please the "white people" as they don't eat spice but will complain at spices that are naturally spicy.. well for a $25 plate. I wanted the Level 5 spice that's advertised.. If you ask the bartender I left 75% of my order there. Even after the habanero was brought... no spice.. watery & did have habanero flavor but deff NO SPICE AT ALL. .. I saw today the majority of the clientele was Hispanic and I also noticed a lot of people were not eating the chilaquiles nor taking to go. Tbh they were not good at all. Might want to make a spicy sauce for the Hispanic clients that like spice. The first 20 min u sat there u heard 3 people complaining.. one set was the group of girls waiting for their casuelas.. 3rd and last.. 40 min to get my order.. I was by myself AT THE BAR.. ONLY ordered the chilaquiles, on a Monday. I would be late to work if I was there on lunch break. Coffee was amazing.. the free tostada was amazing.. just little thing yall might to work on. We like to support businesses in our neighborhood so tried this restaurant. The margaritas were great the food was very tasty, served hot, and well presented all the way including dessert and the service was good. All in all a great place. Only suggestion to get 5 stars is to improve the atmosphere. I like the reason for the animal sounds it was really fun but the lights are too bright to create a warm dinner atmosphere and the music was too quiet. read more
