The staff seemed happy to anticipate our every need, including the slippers we asked for last minute! Opportunities to Enhance: A couple of suggestions for perfection. It would be great to enhance the bar offerings at both the poolside and the extensive 10th-floor lounge area. That 10th-floor space is so expansive--with a pool table, TV lounge, and seating--it could be even greater with some good, lively music and dedicated bar service up there to solidify that "drinking spot" vibe. Again, it's already amazing, but just a suggestion for selfish reasons, haha. Came here for a special event recently. A showing of the ultimate Christmas movie - Die Hard. Option was to just see the movie or add a set menu dinner, which is what we did. Arriving early, we had drinks at the bar before dinner. It's charming bar with 4? seats and good drinks. Dinner was rushed, mainly because we were 10 minutes late but only had an hour to begin with. We were also told that due to the number of us in the dining room seeing the movie that they'd wait. They didn't. Not a big deal. We know the movie. Service at the courtyard for the movie was nice. First of all the property was decorated beautifully for the holiday season. I came here for a work event and the first thing I noticed was the lively bar area. We were seated in one of the private rooms so I was able to observe all the beautiful paintings walking up the stairs case. The entrees were on a pre set menu. Everything was good. The fish was especially good. The only thing I was not able to eat was the dessert since I had to leave a little early. The wait staff took our orders and they were brought out in a timely fashion. We came to la colombe to celebrate our anniversary and was insanely underwhelmed. It's was like the just did not care at all and considering going to colombe was our big plan for the day, I was just left with so much regret. The food was ok. Nothing amazing or egregious. read more

Upon arriving we were cheerfully greeted by the valet and checked in with Jenny (Penny?) who was amazing! Our room was a huge suite, and while the lobby and restaurant were a reflection of Houston past our suite was very modern. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom large with both a modern tub and large shower and 2 TV sets, one in the sitting area, the other in the bed area. We had breakfast at the restaurant which was outstanding and service impeccable. I did order coffee to my room in the morning, which was outstanding, but being an early riser wish I could have gotten it at 6am instead of 7am when the restaurant opens. Stayed during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. We stayed in the bungalows - the hotel offers rooms in its historic mansion - modern tower and the bungalows which are located across the street from the mansion and towers. The hotel is filled with artwork and the mansion is historic. The bungalows are a short walk from the mansion/towers behind a gate which opens into a beautiful courtyard. The courtyard provides tranquility in the city and is very quiet (the fountains to run constantly so you will hear running water in the evening). The one bedroom bungalow was two stories and spacious with every amenity just like a small home. The bungalow was serviced daily and you are able to order room service. It was very quiet and provided the best space to relax during the holiday. The bathroom water pressure was a little weak and there is no full length mirror in the bungalow. There is also a large church near the bungalows in which the bells rang every hour in the morning and afternoon. The restaurant and bar are quaint and charming and the service and food were great. The staff were very accommodating and the amenities on the 10th floor of the tower are amazing (it was too cold to swim) but there are several lounges, tv areas, games, fitness area, and work spaces that are available to guests. There is valet parking and free parking for those staying in the bungalows. Rooms start around 430+ and bungalows are more. Would definitely stay again! This review is strictly for the restaurant as I did not stay at the hotel. My husband and I came on a date night and I had high expectations as I've heard great things about the hotel, but walked away feeling very underwhelmed for how expensive and slow the service was. Our waiter seemed to be too busy with other tables or was just nowhere to be found most of the time. Nothing food related stuck out to me at all except for the braised lamb shank which was good but did not come out hot. The apple crisp was probably the best thing we ordered. I also ordered a latte to have with the dessert but that of course didn't come until after the dessert was finished and we paid for the bill. The timing needed work and in my opinion, the meal was nowhere near worth it for how much we paid. read more

Appreciate the original art very much, but otherwise this hotel is not appropriately priced. We stayed in a bungalow last night and it felt like a decent airbnb, but tackily over-lit and safely bland. It's comfortable but unremarkable. The bedroom of our unit was situated next to the metal gate outside leading to a courtyard, and every time it was slammed shut by other guests, an arresting terror woke us up. My heart jumped out of my chest at least five times throughout the night by this shocking clamor and it was impossible to get a good night's rest. read more

I went on a date to have romantic drinks & bites in the beautiful space. Instead I walked into bright lights, a HUGE TV screen playing sports & club music! Absolutely no relevant vibe to the establishment! No pretty lighting, no beautiful chill music but a sports bar vibe!!!! WTH??? We tried to make the best of it & ordered 2 cocktails & the charcuterie board. The charcuterie was not nice, consisted of 2 average cheeses, some berries & nuts, bolgne & cheap prosciutto, WHITE BREAD TOAST & GRAPE JELLY!!!! GRAPE JELLY???? It wasnt breakfast. It was thrown together with whatever they had in the kitchen. The standout of our stay was commitment to service and customers satisfaction that is beyond what you would expect in a four seasons hotel. Every step of the way the staff was by our side and making our stay more comfortable and enjoyable. From check in to check out everyone was beyond helpful and nice. The suites are gorgeous and very spacious in the tower. I love the muted color scheme throughout. The furniture and facilities provided in the rooms are excellent. I urge you to call the hotel and speak to them about what you expect from a hotel room in terms of view. The hotel staff would be able to guide you better so you stay in a room that you will like. The mansion has several guest rooms/suites but I haven't been in them. The residence tower behind the mansion reserved the two ground floors to the hotel. The most beautiful light and better views are on the Montrose and Harold street corner and along Harold street. The other areas also should satisfy most others as well. Hotel guests have access to the pool on the 10th floor -- gorgeous! And a fitness center. The hotel is located in the heart of Montrose district but the tower rooms are dead quiet and provide a wonderful away from the bustle of the city. The restaurant in house is no ordinary hotel lobby restaurant. I thought their food was excellent. The hotel mansion as well as the tower hallways are full of original art work that is a delight to the eyes. If only the very best will do and you want to do a boutique hotel and you don't want to do the hotels downtown or galleria, this hotel may be the one for you. lovely lovely hotel with a nice concierge. I had called to learn more about the hotel. They also came to the rescue when my flight was delayed 24 hrs and they booked me for another night. Although it was weird that the amenities in the nicer suite were Aesop products but the soap in the smaller room was some over-fragrant brand. The drinks at their bar were beautiful + tasty, the pool was gorgeous (at the roof) and the hotel was well-situated to places we ate at. We were there to chk out a game at the NRG stadium. I felt safe and that the service was genuine enough! would go back! nearby is a new scene in Montrose within walking distance with PicniK, a breakfast place, coffee, Japanese and a few retail shops like Mejuri. I could agree the service at breakfast was slow as other mention but I wasn't rushed. The lobby is small so some ppl played multiple roles. I think I also had a great experience w Grace. Rudest staff I've ever encountered. They will *sit* you without a reservation. But they won't serve you a drink at the bar or at your patio table without a reservation, and basically won't serve you at all for some unspoken arbitrary reason. We sat on the patio for THIRTY MINUTES and like joked with other patrons on the patio, "where is the staff" for a half hour before leaving. Might be cool with a reservation, don't go otherwise. I called late in the afternoon and asked if the bar was open. They said yes. I asked if there were available tables in the bar. They said yes. I show up at 5:00pm with two guests and all but one table was reserved, so I sat on a backless ottoman while my guests sat in the chairs. When we left at 6:30,, there was still a comfortable table for three available. I also had to ask them to turn down the music because between the music and the rattle of shaking cocktails at the bar, we could hardly hold a conversation. Salad was light and French bread crispy and warm The Chilean sea bass was so flaky and moist and they did not over flavor my favorite fish! My friend and I had brunch here on Christmas Day. It was not busy at all. It's a beautiful place. I was looking forward to having a beautiful meal. The service was very slow. The meal was very average. I asked for butter and jam for my toast and never received it. When time to pay for our meal (we had to wait quite a bit to pay), we again informed our server that we never received what we had asked for.....he shrugged his shoulders and laughed it off. I was shocked by the evening I had in the restaurant a few days ago. Service was not only very slow but no word from the server as to why or what he or the management might do about the delay. When the entrees finally arrived, one was essentially raw (poultry, no less), and two of the three steaks ordered at the table were not done as ordered. The server never came by to ask how things were and we could not catch his attention as he was so busy attending to other tables in his station. When the raw poultry was finally sent back (the server finally came over when we got his attention to call him), it didn't appear on the bill as we requested but numerous up charges appeared for "call" liquors--come on...Tito's? No offense to the brand but it just doesn't seem premium. And an up charge without announcing such (or printing it on the menu so that patrons can make their choices clear) is really less-than-classy. The management never came by to try to soften the blow of our unacceptable entrees and service issues--no apology, no comped dessert, nothing. Either the server didn't report our table's concerns or the management knew about it and simply ignored us. I have dined in fine restaurants and bistros all over the world and this nickel and dime stuff does not befit an establishment such as this purports to be. We recently bought a pied-a-terre in a high rise close by and were looking forward to this being a go-to, walkable venue for us. Sadly, it was our first time and most assuredly, our last. read more

I visited the hotel at La Colombe d'Or this weekend and it was amazing! My favorite was the awesome service poolside. Sam was our waitress and definitely made it a memorable experience. The space is beautiful and so unique for Houston as we treasure nothing old or historical. The food, however, is awful. It's all smoke and mirrors. In this town - with this food scene - you can't just look pretty. You need substance to back it up. The crudo appetizer was tasteless slime. The fish poorly cooked on a bed of wet noodles. The "hand pie" desert is straight from McDonald's but cost $15. The wait staff was also overworked and undertrained. I realize the surge of reopening has been a challenge for many business but several people didn't even know what items on the menu were when I inquired. We waited for our bill for 20 minutes and finally just got up and paid at the hostess stand. Uchi is a block away. Go there and have your socks knocked off. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed the weekend in Houston at La Colome d'Or. we arrived Friday night after valet closed so the receptionist (who was extremely kind and helpful) told us to leave the car at the front and showed us to our room. The next day, we went to get our car but valet (who was also really kind) said they weren't comfortable driving the car due to it being so low. So we went and grabbed the car ourselves, which we preferred. They valet attendant told us that if we arrived late again, we could drive into the garage ourselves. We were at the race track all day Saturday and got back late again. We were exhausted and ready to park and go inside. We drove up to the parking garage and found that the gate was closed. A female security guard followed us and asked what we were doing. We told her we were trying to park. She asked if we had a ticket, we never received one so we told her we didn't but we had a hotel room. She said she couldn't let us into the garage without a ticket. We asked her where we could park and she said to park on the other street, Hawthorne, which was at another hotel. So we went there and parked. We walked up to the hotel and a different security guard asked if he could help us and who we were picking up as if we had no business being at this hotel. When we told him we were staying there, he let us through. We got up and I got in the shower. My boyfriend went back to grab something out of the car. When he walked back up to the building, a different security guard told him it wasn't a good idea to park on the street we were told to park on because a car had been vandalized there a few days ago. He told him to park on Harold which runs right next to our hotel. So my boyfriend went back to the car and tried to park on Harold but there were no spots available. He finally found a spot on Yoakum Blvd and parked. To no surprise, the female security guard harassed him about parking there along with another security guard that walked up. After harassing him, they said they needed to "verify that he was staying there". They called reception told them the room number and name and reception confirmed that we were, in fact staying there. It wasn't until then that they started being more hospitable and unlocked the parking garage for him. I understand that we weren't dressed the same way most guests here might but we were at the race track all day, in the sun. It's ridiculous that you have to "dress the part" at this hotel in order to not be harassed by the incompetent security team. We will definitely not be staying at this hotel again. read more

My review stems from the treatment of ride share drivers who are forced to deliver to this establishment. The concierge who worked the evening of April 07, 2020 at approx 9:30pm looked a ride share driver up and down. After determining that she wasn't fit to enter the establishment based solely on the way she appeared, he had determined she was not allowed to enter. This resulted in her not being able to deliver hot food in a timely manner. Both her hands were full of items containing the food of which was previously ordered. The concierge proceeded to terrorize the young lady with her arms and hands full of items by smirking, laughing and taunting her. The young lady pleaded with the concierge to allow her to proceed with her delivery and he told she could only park on the outside and wait, despite the instructions given by the ride share app from the customer to have the items delivered to her door. For approximately 15 minutes, this went on. The food was well below the recommended 140 degree temp. She was forced to cancel the order as she was not able to satisfy her delivery. The young man continue to taught her despite her following his every degrading instruction from behind the thick glass doors. This type of behavior displayed shows an implicit bias that should be addressed to both that employee as well as all members of the staff at this establishment. Management should be made aware and address all matters such as this with diligence and grace. read more

Reading other HRW yelp reviews I prepared myself for a mediocre experience and set my expectations rather low but I was surprised by the end of the night. The whole experience wasn't super spectacular but at least it wasn't a poor one, the ambiance was nice and the food was better than what my expectations were set to be so would rate this place 3 1/2 stars. We had a reservation of 4 for 7:30 PM and when we arrived we were promptly seated and given our HRW menus. It's a bit silly of a detail, but I was rather impressed how the menu wasn't just a reused sheet of paper but actually presented in a nice menu cover dealio. As we were deciding on what to eat they served each of us our own slice of warm bread, probably baguette or something. I don't know if they do this to be upscale or a form of portion control, probably both. Anyways onto the food. Escargots Bourguignon: These came out super hot even the footed escargot plate will burn you, so you might want to let it cool for a bit so you don't burn yourself/tongue. The escargot was cooked well, not super chewy and very flavorful as it was saturated in the parsley and garlic butter. I don't know if they changed their menu, but my appetizer was sans croissant. Lobster Bisque: This tasted very seafoody which is good, but nothing super exciting about this appetizer, also thought it was odd that they decided to use crab meat instead of lobster, the bisque might have been experiencing an identity crisis. Braised Goat: According to the menu the goat was paired with squash blossom, baby arugula, garlic butter froth but I am pretty sure instead of squash I got okra... Anyways, the braised goat reminded me of BBQ pulled pork since it was shredded and the okra seemed to have a sweet BBQ like glaze on them and complimented the buttery yellow sauce, overall not bahhhh. Pan Seared Redfish: I liked how the redfish had a nice crispy sear on the outside but tender on the inside. The sea urchin butter tasted exactly as it sounds, quite delicious but how can you not like sea urchin butter. The fish was also supposed to have shishito pepper and kimchi vinegar but I think they ran out and pretty sure we were eating red bell peppers and didn't taste the kimchi vinegar. Bread Pudding: Hm everyone at our table enjoyed this a lot but I thought it was just ok like a typical bread pudding with vanilla gelato and bourbon caramel, but I did like the golden kiwi (haha my friends thought it was an under ripe kiwi). Dou-ssant: Reading the reviews I was glad my bf ordered this, but I ended up jacking it from him since I liked this better than my bread pudding. The dou-ssant is a play off the cronut, a doughnut made with croissant dough. I liked how the dou-ssant was not soggy, fried well (you could see the different layers they made for the croissant portion) and unlike most places, this version wasn't injected with a butt ton of cream and not overly sweet like other variations. It was simply dressed with some spiced apples and some raspberry coulis (I didn't really care for this) but the apples and the dou-ssant was good. By the end of the night we were stuffed (haha too much bread) and per a fellow yelpers recommendation we asked to check out the hotel, a nice way to digest. The hotel is definitely historic, and the interior/design of the rooms resemble this. They also have an art gallery filled with lots of women and their lady parts and other work of arts so be sure to check it out! Overall, food and service wasn't bad but what you get seemed to differ than what is on the menu (at least the one online) so food/quality may also be inconsistent. If you don't want to dine in, then just stop by to check out the really unique layout of the rooms/art gallery. read more

The service was extremely slow and the food sub par for this type of restaurant. Chicken was not fully cooked and had to be sent away and steak was not cooked to specification. We were a table of 4 women, sitting next to two couples, and the owner greeted and chatted with them but didn't so much as look our way--same for treatment from the waiter who hovered over the other couples and ignored us. There was an unexpected $3 up charge on basic rye and bourbon already pricey cocktails. It wasn't about the money--it was about the all around atmosphere. The place is in our neighborhood, and we were so intrigued to see this old establishment and hoping it would be a regular for us to and enjoy the top notch food and service, but we will not be back. read more
