La Comida always screws up order to go. it never fail. They have lost my business of going on and off for 20 plus years. I paid over $45 and this place couldn't even add sour cream or ranch I paid for! I gave them another chance after screwing up previous to go order. There is better options and quality for the price in Chico. I am angry I spent this much money here and paid for basically beans lettuce on tortilla with skimpy amount of chicken. barely amount any cheese. And one of the girls who was making orders was gossiping about customers. No wonder why my order got messed up. read more

In my opinion the food is very good ! No it's not the most authentic , but with todays prices the way they are, high everywhere, this is a great place. my friend and I have doctors inh Chico and we make sure that our appointments are not on mondays because they are closed . I took a group of students here on a college exploration trip. I got a tip from a Chico Alum that this place was all the rage. When I went in, I was impressed by the low prices. The menu seemed reasonable--usual general Mexican fare, burritos and enchiladas and blah. I don't think anybody working there was Mexican. The meat choices were basically hamburger and chicken. I am a California native an have been eating in taquerias my entire life. It's strange to see hamburger in a Mexican restaurant. There were no meat options I could get behind. No carne asada, or carnitas....just ground beef. The food tasted like a giant TV dinner. It fills a hole. I could see the appeal if I was a drunk college student. I had a Mexican student with me on the trip, and she was horrified, as was I. The food was salty and tasted vaguely of dog food. I got a box for my oversized, underflavored burrito thing. I threw most of it away. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, go to any taqueria instead. It's cheap. Perhaps if I was bro wasted I would like it. So yeah. It tries. Always consistent in food - a bit heavy handed on the Salt - maybe more Mexican herbs & spices less salt. My husband has been purchasing from LaComida since summer of 1976. We moved back to Chico in 2000 and grab a bite of La Comida . Our 2 daughters have been partakes and now our grandchildren enjoy it as well. Please add "Cilantro" to the menu!! read more

I love La Comida! They always have great service and the food is great. If your looking for "authentic" I lean towards more of an American version of Mexican food with this place but it good regardless! Always fresh, hot, prices are extremely fair and I don't think I've ever had anything from here I don't like. It's not a huge place inside so get there early for lunch or dinner rush. It's a favorite around Chico so they are busy during rush hours. It's not fancy inside but always clean. I gave them 5 stars because I've never been disappointed one bit in this place. We went for Taco Tuesday and was immediately surprised when we walked in the door on how big the place was. Very good for a bigger parties and kids. The tacos were on the American side but still good for the low price. We will definitely go back to try other menu items. read more

Have been doing La Comida for over 35 years, knew the Dad in Paradise before he passed away, Was a weekly meal stop for many many years!! Was really sad when they decided to close the one in Paradise, was even sadder to hear the kids decided to sell the one in Chico!! So this was my first time to try it after changing hands!! Was not impressed with some of the changes. Charging now for extra dressing, salsa, sour cream, etc... The ranch dressing was to watered down, the salsa was much thinner, very little beans an chicken on the tostada, the enchilada was so salty I could not eat it!!! If the new owners keep this up, won't be long before there out of business!!! This place has been a Chico landmark for years!!! This has traditionally been a place to go for decent food at a very reasonable price! This winning formula is not the case any longer, per my last visit a few days ago. What was once a restaurant just about everyone could afford, has become quite a bit pricier. If this trend continues, this restaurant will cease to do business in the Chico area. I've been eating here since they opened and the people and the food hasn't changed. The food is good and less expensive than most places and you all the chips and salsa you can eat. I grew up on La Comida since 1968 when they opened. I still stop in every time I'm in town. If you are not from Chico you may not get why it is such a treasure. La Comida is Chico. As I walked in, I thought about the name - "La Comida" literally means "The Food" in Spanish. Many restaurant names reference a place/region or a particular dish they make. This place wants you to know that what they serve is "food". Well, yes, what they serve is food, but that's about as far as it goes in my book... I did not grow up in Chico eating here, so I don't have an emotional attachment to the place. My perspective is that of a person who expects fresh, tasty Mexican food from a Mexican restaurant. The Good: It was cheap and a large portion. Plenty of seating with a family-style, fast food vibe. Abundant close parking. Food: This is not authentic Mexican food by any means. In fact, it tastes like Taco Bell food. The enchilada sauce looked and tasted like brown gravy. No hint of tomato or any spices - just brown stuff. They put gallons of it all over my "super" burrito. I ordered the ground beef filling. When I first cut into the burrito, a little river of grease flowed into the brown gravy sauce. Yuck! I tasted it and basically came to the conclusion that it was at least edible. I was really hungry, so that may have influenced my decision to eat it. There was a big glob of sour cream on top which helped to cut the greasiness a bit. Service: I was told at the register that there would be "chips on my table already". I thought, "how do they know where I am going to sit"? Well, they didn't. They put a basket of chips (in a coffee filter) on each and every table with a squirt bottle of fresh tomato salsa. This disturbs me on various levels... (A) I don't want my food to be unattended for long periods of time on some table. How many flies have landed on them? Has some kid come by and touched them? I think this is against some food safety code - or at least it should be. (B) Fresh tomato salsa should be refrigerated, so leaving out on the table is not cool. They had plenty of people working there (not doing much) who could have brought me some fresh chips & salsa. What is up with that?!? Be prepared to hear numbers called out VERY LOUDLY over am amplified PA system while you are eating. This is how they tell patrons their food is ready. "11", "12", "15".... It made me feel like I was in a Bingo hall. Also, NO REFILLS on their fountain sodas. This is insane. Everyone gives refills on fountain sodas. It costs them like a nickel to refill a soda - come on, guys! [BTW, I was told that I would get a refill if I bought an XL Pepsi. When I went up to get my XL refill, I was told that refills only apply to iced tea. Jeez!] I can't personally recommend La Comida, as I was underwhelmed by the food and service (and had health safety concerns). If you like this place due to nostalgia, then enjoy! I noticed as I was waiting for my food to go that they put my container of food in the microwave. Not only this but it's in a foam container. I know some foam containers are okay to put into a microwave so I trusted they knew what they were doing and took my food home. Once I got home I looked up which kinds of foam containers are safe to microwave food in, the ones that are safe have certain markings on the containers to let you know they are safe. The container my food is in is not safe to microwave. Unsafe foam containers in a microwave with your food can lead to many health issues, I'm very upset about this. read more

Since the restaurant changed hands I've noticed everything's fresher. The cheese is tastier, and the salsa is not watered down. This is a local landmark, and you can't beat the prices. The staff are always polite. And the tables are busted now. Great job!!! read more

We are visiting the area and wanted some Mexican food. Wasn't sure how the food was going to be but it had a high rating so, decided to try it. I have to tell you the food was wonderful!!! The portions were big. It is a sit down but if you have been to any of the Jose's restaurants ( southern California) it is like those. You order first sit down, wait till they call your number etc... Dave who helped the customers in the seating areas was awesome!! He paid attention and helped before asking and cleared the table anything you could ask for. The food is usually good from over the 15 years, but the customer service is always off as of lately. They seem to always write down the wrong items. I won't come back again until they remedy the problem. I'm tired of ordering chicken to get home and discover my burrito is ground beef. This is third time now in a row paying for something I don't even like eating. I really don't care for their ground beef and It's Really irritating how they keep screwing up my order. Been going here since 1980. The food is consistent, familiar, and decent. I almost always see someone that I know eating there. I have had the super burrito, and taco salad, but order the tostada with beef, beans, extra cheese, tomatoes, and extra house dressing. This is always enough to fill me up to the point of being uncomfortable. The chips and salsa, while not the best, are the "old standby". I have bought their chips by the five gallon bucket, and salsa by the half gallon just to munch at home. While it is not cuisine by any stretch of the imagination, La Comida has it's place, and, as you have likely read, a very loyal following. It fills the need, is cheap, easy, and fast. La Comida...sure, it should really be named "La Comedia" because its a joke. Yesterday got a taco salad...with no taco shell and or tortilla chips. It just came on a plate, in which I don't even know why or what makes this a taco salad because it was just shredded boiled chicken, ok ranch dressing, underneath a mountain of cheddar cheese. Which I guess is why they call it a taco salad. But they are better off calling this mess, a low budget burrito bowl. And on top of it all I wasn't even offered no tortilla chips to put on my salad or to eat with my salsa. So I guess they ran out yesterday or I was supposed to ask, I just don't know. But I even asked for croutons and was told that's what the crackers next to the soda machine was for. Like wow I was supposed to figure that one out too! Cmon man....this place is a disgrace to Mexican food in its entirety, your better off going to Taco Bell. I mean this place don't even have carne asada! But I can say the workers and staff are friendly. And they have a decent foot traffic. Though they need a menu overhaul and or find new partners who actually care about the food they serve. Because right now it's a complete disappointment to this community. And you can find a better meal from Adrian at "Taco Ramirez" taco truck. That's very good food that's cheap, unlike this joint.
