i have waited to send my review because this is my favorite (really the only good traditional) Mexican restaurant in Chico. But... it has been at least three of the last four or five times we've ordered takeout that i have had mistakes or less than their usual consistently good food. Things have been missing, or made differently from the order. The most recent example was the number one combination ordered with a shredded beef taco and two cheese enchiladas that came with one cheese and one shredded beef enchilada instead of two cheese, and there was no cheese on top of the refried beans, which makes them quite dry. And that leads to the other issue that has been happening lately; skimpy portions on things like enchilada sauce and cheese. It's not an inexpensive place to eat, so when you spend the money on the food, you expect it to be what it's always been. And sadly lately, it has been lacking. Really hoping they will get things fixed and back in order soon or we may have to skip it. read more

Service, food, and ambiance were right where they needed to be. Is it super fancy? No. Is it low key pretty darn good? Yes! And the service was top notch which, as I've said in other reviews is a rare thing. The drinks could use work but honestly there my weren't bad for a little Mexican food joint. I enjoyed the queso birrias and could only finish 2 out of the 3. My friend who has dairy restrictions was able to enjoy her food with no cheese and that was a win! 3 of use enjoyed a giant margarita with a decent variety to choose from. All in all I would say this place was a win! Next time I'm in Chico, this will be my Mexican food spot. read more

This place is great! I have been several times, and again tonight with a friend. First we had a Cadillac Margarita, and it was delicious. Then I ordered the shrimp fajita, my friend ordered the beef fajita. Both were absolutely delicious as well. They serve chips and 2 kinds of salsa, one mild and one hotter. The rice and beens and fresh tortillas were nice as well. I have never been disappointed with any of the food there. The service was great. We had a couple ladies who served us and both were very friendly and professional. I highly recommend this place, probably one of the most delicious and authentic Mexican restaurants in Chico. Chili Colorado the beef was hard to the bite, which is unusual as it is supposed to be softer. Sauce acceptable. 2.5 Stars. Chili Verde with Pork better of the bunch. 4 Stars. You would think a growing city like Chico would offer a huge variety of Mexican restaurants, I was astonished to only find a few truly authentic places. Which came as a surprise since this city is loaded with diversity with the university and more out-of-towners settling here. That is until "El Guayacan Mexican Restaurant" was my pick of choice based on the above average Yelp reviews and killer photos of their food. As many other Yelpers have mentioned, this place is located in a quiet strip mall. And the day when I came (which was on a Friday afternoon around 3:00pm), the business actually had no customers. The parking lot was quite spacious which made finding a spot that much easier. This didn't worry me too much as that time of day is generally the slowest before the dinner rush arrives. One nice attribute that this restaurant offers and it is spacious! They offer an abundance of large booths and oversized tables for the larger parties. When I stepped inside, there was a very nice lady that said "Hola"; that definitely grabbed my attention. Since my visit coincidentally fell on "National Margarita Day" (which was on 2/22/19), I ended up going with their House Margarita (on the rocks). To start off with my food experience, my waitress offered me two types of salsa, one hot and one mild. I opted for the mild as I am not the biggest fan of spicy foods. Since my stomach was absolutely growling (especially after my 90 minute drive from Redding to Chico), I took no hesitation to order their "Shredded Beef Chalupa w/rice & beans). My dish came out in just under ten minutes. As far as the food, they offer a very sizable portion; almost to the point where its large enough for two people. Taste wise, the shredded beef was tender, seasoned very well, and had an above average home cooked taste to it. The Mexican rice was also moist (and not dry like other places I've been to) while the refried beans were decent (even though there was WAY too much cheese on it). Overall, "El Guayacan" is a solid four-star rating in my book. Prices are just a couple bucks higher than similar restaurants in my hometown (of Sacramento). But for authenticity, this is one of the better sit-down Mexican restaurants that Butte County has to offer. read more

Cute place in a mall environment. There is a Vietnamese Pho Restaurant down the walk. This restaurant sits into a ROUND corner. Look for the sidewalk sign. This mild salsa is lovely CHUNKY deliciousness for those of us who like MILD MILD salsa. They bring both so you can add as much spice as you like if it's toooo mild. Lunch stops at 2pm. Bummer. Prices go up on the dinner menu, supposedly because portions are larger. Huevos Rancheros is NOT on the dinner menu but they ARE ALLOWING us to order off the lunch menu...with a small up charge...$1. The waitress said this is in fact a larger portion on this plate. My husband ordered whole AND refried beans rather than rice. Both are great but the whole beans are spectacular in a flavorful broth. This meal is a 5 star value even with the up charge. SEE RECEIPT! I ordered a Chili Rellano on the side, served on a bed of lettuce, intending that the lettuce be wilted by the hot food on top. It was served PERFECTLY and smothered in sauce and cheese. The sauce is a deep red sauce with almost no vegetables but very delicious anyway. I'm not even missing the pile of veggies that I usually prefer. This is a 5 star Chili Rellano all the way to the stem because they REMOVED the SEEDS! Way to go! And I do not detect microwaving either! I've almost given up Rellanos because so many are frozen and microwaved into unpleasant chewiness. NOT HERE. I'm pleasantly STUFFED. This is a great value for small eaters! We are only traveling through. If we were local I could imagine this being our go to Mexican restaurant. If you find this review useful PLEASE VOTE! read more
