As a married woman with two kids, and a full time career, helping a parent transition into senior living is an emotional and often overwhelming experience. When my mother moved into La Costa Glen, I wasn't just looking for a place that looked nice--I wanted a community where she would feel respected, independent, safe, and genuinely happy. We looked at Carlsbad by the Sea, the Meridian San Marcos and Santianna by Oakmont. We landed on La Costa Glen. From the very beginning, La Costa Glen exceeded our expectations. The campus is beautifully maintained and feels more like a vibrant neighborhood than a "facility." What stood out most, though, was the staff. Every person we interacted with--from the sales team to the dining and activities staff, and the executive director - are patient, professional, and truly kind. They took the time to get to know my mom as a person, not just a resident, which gave our family tremendous peace of mind. My mother has settled in wonderfully. She has access to a wide variety of activities, social opportunities, and amenities. It's clear that residents are encouraged to live full, engaged lives, and the community has a positive, energetic atmosphere. Many residents in their 80s and 90s along with 70s, for which my mom is 76. As someone who lives nearby and visits often, I can confidently say that La Costa Glen feels like a place where seniors are valued and supported, not managed. Knowing my mother is in a community where she is thriving has been an enormous relief for our entire family. I would highly recommend La Costa Glen to other families who are navigating this transition and want a place that truly cares about its residents. read more

Visited a friend who lives in this retirement community. The guest rooms are very comfortable and convenient. The food served on the property was amazing. We had daily breakfast which was included with guest rooms. Service was impeccable and property is beautiful. Would love to visit again and would consider retiring here if given the opportunity. We took a tour of several CCRC's in Southern California this February, and we decided to move forward with La Costa Glen. Karie was great in giving us a tour of the campus. She arranged for us to stay overnight so we had plenty of time to meet residents and get a feel of the place. The food was amazing! Only issue I can see is gaining weight...but the full activity schedule should help burn off those calories. We especially liked the Garden Villas since we have a dog. There is a lovely walking trail for your fur baby. They even have pickleball and tennis courts- a must for us. Kari even arranged with some residents to see the interior of their home. I took a long time to think about if I wanted to post a review or not, but I think I need to. My grandmother lived here for nearly 15 years. She spent an obscene amount of money to buy into a program that was a fixed rate and she was promised she could live the rest of her days with 5 star treatment. The first few years were great. The food was amazing, the care (she was in independent living at the time so she didn't need much) was wonderful, and everyone was nice. I'm my grandmother's only family so I was there often and most of the staff recognized me. As time went on, she needed more care. Life happened. It happens to us ALL. And unfortunately, as she needed more care, her care got worse and worse. The staff when she moved from independent to Skilled Nursing were awful. She lived in Skilled Nursing off and on for years and was finally moved there permanently. Her care dropped so drastically that I no longer felt like she was safe staying there and I had to pull her out of there. The final straw for me was how long they left her in soiled clothes and they forgot to feed her for an entire day. I called and complained and the staff seemed more annoyed than anything that I was concerned for her well being. I couldn't justify keeping her there. I lived at LCG since January 2025. I am happy with the decision to move here. It is a relief not to have to fix things that were breaking faster than I could repair them. My wife loves not having to cook every night. In my opinion, I think that LCG may be the best and nicest CCRC facility in the San Diego area. Yes, it is expensive, but I think that we are getting the quality that we are paying for. I'm very familiar with a CCRC in Rancho Bernardo (in laws lived there for 11 years) and there are a lot more clubs and activities at LCG. Also it seems like the residents are more friendly and happier at LCG. We have made many new friends since we moved in. Often another couple will invite us to join them for dinner and vice-versa. It is a great way to meet people and make new friends. The food is good and the portions are large enough that I typically take home the left-overs to be my lunch the following day. For breakfast I often go to the free continental breakfast held every day from 8 to 10 am. Also, it is a great way to meet people and have discussions. I noticed that there are some 1, 2 and 3 star reviews on Yelp. But 12 of the 13 reviews are between 2-1/2 to 9-1/2 years old. Only one was newer (~ 6 months old). So, I think that they may be "data points" that may no longer apply. LCG is kind of like a land-based cruise ship. read more

Had such a wonderful afternoon visiting La Costa Glen. As my husband and I are getting older, we realize we need to start looking at retirement communities. We were shown around by a nice young man by the name of Mason. The place is absolutely beautiful. Lunch was tasty and the staff could not have been nicer. This place is world class. We evaluated so many places and now, in our 4th month here (though still commuting from our main residence) the 5 start review is completely accurate and earned. I get completely that these communities often have "food" as a complaint. LCG and its massive food offerings rivals any 4 star restaurant anywhere. Aside from the food and beverage operations, the staff that meets your each and every need could not be more gracious or helpful. One only has to engage with any of them to hear how much they enjoy what they do, where they do it AND how long they have been at LCG. First off, remember that La Costa Glen is extremely expensive - - probably the most expensive retirement community in North County. However, when we first moved here year ago, it seemed to be worth it. At that time the food was spectacular, but now the menu options and variety are poor, and food quality is mediocre. We also quickly learned that building maintenance is horrible. We had a problem with black mold, and that took more than a month to fix. It took three months to get our toilets fixed, and 10 months to fix a shower. There are many new retirements options in the area, and whatever great things you have heard about La Costa Glen are probably is no longer valid. read more

I my grandparents live there. The indoor pool is nice there are fun out door games. The employees at dining halls are very nice. I am a picky eater so I don't like the food there but there French fries are good the portions are small. tMy wife and I moved in during the teeth of the COVID storm. We were welcomed immediately by the staff and residents. The welcome process has not stopped! Residents we do not know have reached out to us to have dinner with them. The process of eating in the various dining rooms is simple and the food is varied and delicious. We have made some dear friends here. There are plenty of activities and many are group activities. I have had the recent "pleasure" of surgery at UCSD. Not only did The Glen provide transportation for my wife to visit but the nursing staff called to inquire about my health! The Physical Therapy Dept at the GLEN has been fantastic during my reparative stage. We were tempted to come here by the local, overall size, attractiveness of the buildings and grounds and the friendliness of the staff. However La Costa Glen is so much more than that! read more

I will continue to review, even though you take them down. This is personal experience of my parents living their last nine years at La Costa Glen. The food and services declined severely over the final three years. The resident services director could not keep good staff, as they were either fired or quit due to her management. The morning of our mother's death, the resident services director called and stated "you need to get her out of here now". I think that sums it up. No hello, no condolences, just orders. We had already set up the mortuary for pick up. Don't be mesmerized by beautiful grounds, the resident services management is awful. read more

Decided to not throw good money after bad. Moved to Chateau Lake San Marcos, where I own my condo, and pay half the monthly fee for most of the same benefits (plus the food here is better). I moved here a year ago. as soon as I moved in, they closed the dining room and raised my monthly fee by 6%. I have tried to like this place but the food is inedible and services are non existent. I did not buy a parking spot ($10,000 and $20 a month) because my car is 8 yrs old and there seemed to be plenty of open parking steps away. I was not told that once the dining room was reopened, all the staff would park in these open spaces. I am forced to use a walker because of hip and back problems. I am told by safety that they will find me a place to park and I can shuttle to and from my car. Not for a $605,000 buy in amount and over 5,000 a month! I am not spending another $10,000 for a parking spot. Now they no longer deliver packages. I am on a walker. I can no longer get them to my apartment. They tell me they have carriers. How am I supposed to use a walker and pull a carrier? No help concerning my 1st hip replacement. No one ever answers the phone. they may or may not call you back. My only alternative is to move. We have two sons. One is an attorney. His speciality is estate planning. One day were having a discussion about retirement and he mentioned he has many elderly clients. He has observed that when they are in their seventies thay are healthly and doing very wel. When in their eighties things start to slip and when in their ninities for most of them it's all over. After that we decided to take the conversation to heart and started checking retirement homes There was no doubt we wanted a CCRC (Continuous Care Retirement Community) retirement community where should we get seriously ill there would be a place which would take care of us. We visited six of the major retirement homes in the San Diego area. When we visited La Costa Glen we immediately felt at home. The ambiance and environment reminded us of Hope Ranch in Santa Barbara and Rancho Santa Fe. Places we had previously lived. There are many benefits associated wsith living at La Costa Glen. Including two swsimming pools, a Pitch and Put golf course, Tennis and Pickle Ball courts, excellent dinning room with gourment menus, activities too many to mention. One night when we were having dinner a Server came to our table and wished me a happy birthday. I asked him how he knew it was my birthday. He said because his birthday was on the same day. I mention this because it exemplfiies the caring nature of the La Costa Glen staff. Carol and I have looked ahead to the time when we may need shilled nursing. You can talk about all the benefits which a retirement home has such as good food, recreation activities etc. but those are a given. Sure we could have a house but should one of us become incapacitated the care which would be required when living in your home could be a disaster from the standpoint of getting required 24/7 help to say nothing of the expense. This concern is minimized because we are at La Costa Glen. In the final analysis the care you may require is going to dominte. The fact that swimming pools and movies theaters exist won't do you any good. Being at a first class profesionally run facility with first class professional staff is going to be very imortant to us. my mom moved here about six years ago. she raves about how much she likes the place and she's pretty particular. i eat here two or three times a month (sometimes with the wife and kids) and the food (though predictably not very adventurous) has consistantly been pretty good -- we don't get to eat in the more formal dining room much since i'm usually in shorts. as a care facility certainly five stars. expensive but then again like most things in life i guess you get what you pay for ... read more

Comment on the number of meals served at La Costa Glen: While the standard contract is for one meal per person per day, in fact we have been in Covid-19 modified isolation for more than six months. LCG Food and Beverage is bringing our food in a paper bag to our door every day, unless we eat on the dining room patio. The food in a paper bag is enough for two meals per person for most people. Recently, there was an announcement that the dining room would reopen at 1/4 capacity. If you want to eat with friends or spouse in the dining room, you have to make a reservation. You may not eat more than once a week in the dining room. There is not enough capacity. There are plenty of activities here, although large groups are not allowed. There are two swimming pools and two fitness centers (full of exercise equipment) open for those who make reservations, and it is relatively easy to make a reservation. On Halloween, there were circus acrobats in costume performing in the courtyards; everyone thoroughly enjoyed the show. At other times there have been live bands performing. There are lectures on the internal television channel, covering a variety of topics including science and technology. LCG is not for everyone. Some people try it and leave. However, the majority are happy here. Appliance maintenance is included in the month fee. If you washing machine drips, you call operations and someone comes the next day to check and repair it. Spill something on the carpet? Operations will send a carpet guy to clean the spot. Trouble with your TV? There is a TV guy to come help you. read more

La Costa Glen is a very special place to live. It's a community of very interesting, accomplished people in a gorgeous setting of walking paths and beautiful flowers everywhere. Our location in Carlsbad could not be better .... we are close to shopping and just a few miles to the beach. Our campus is surrounded by lovely green, open space. Update on La Costa Glen. I previously gave them 5 stars. And for the most part they still offer 5 star activities, Ammenities, support, and friendly staff. Why I redused them to 3 stars is because of the food service. 1. They have closed the dining room due to being short staffed. Higher temporary workers if you have to, but do not take away the most important amenity you offer.... When they closed the dining room durring the first covid scar, they delivered the bags of food to everyon. Now you have to go pick it up. Open the dining room. If it is a saftey issue then only allow folks who have been vaccinated in. But don't punish all for the few who have decided not to vaccinate. 2. When the dining room is open and you get your food, they don't allow the residence to take their leftover food back to their room for a possible lunch the next day. If your only going to provide 1 meal a day then at least allow left overs to be taken home. read more

I have lived at La Costa Glen for a year and a half and it's the best decision I could have made. The community is beautiful, the staff are unfailingly helpful and friendly. As for the residents, they are friendly , well traveled and interesting. There is no need to feel lonely, what with the many activities, classes, clubs, dances, concerts, daytime and evening excursions to museums, theaters and the like. As everyone else, La Costa Glen has had its challenges due to Covid , but they have gone above and beyond to see that residents and staff remain safe, comfortable and happy as we round the corner. read more

Oh, to be 60!!!! Sooooooo, I want to live here. I want to live here now. The problem is, you have to be 60 plus. We went here to visit some close friends, who while not family by blood, I consider familiy. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. It seems like it would have everything you could want from a retirement community. Our friends, when they first told us that they were moving here, shocked me, as I found them to be super active and social seniors that love to experience all that the world has to share with them....... And they still do, this place doesn't hinder them a bit, and adds a lot to their lives. The campus is gorgeous, and meticulously maintained. It is like being on a cruise on the land with my better living quarters. Chip and puts, tennis, horse shoes, pools, game rooms, card rooms, libraries, social events, guest quarters, this place seems to have it all. We've been here 6 months and feel like we're on a cruise with lots of planned activities and great food. Transportation is provided to doctors and for shopping. Off campus activities are planned every month. If you're having a medical problem the staff is there right away. Even my household problems have been taken care of in a timely manner with just one phone call. The best part of living here are the other residents. Beautiful surroundings, very tastefully decorated. Helpful staff in general but a bit misleading or confusing with the buy-in details. They quoted us 10% down to get in while we sold our mom's home, then said oops, my mistake, it's actually 50% down! We looked at a lot of places and this is one of the finer quality communities, with access to just about everything you could desire and it's one of the more expensive - we felt they weren't entirely clear on the monetary details. Beautiful grounds, excellent dining room--these are undeniable and much appreciated. However-- I feel like the pricing structure at LCG is a total racket. Everyone there pays the same amount to have access to the widely touted "three levels of health care," but guess what? There are so few spaces in assisted living that only a tiny percentage of residents can ever hope to avail themselves of it, despite the fact that most or all of them may end up needing assistance as they age. Everyone else is just paying for the care of those few people lucky enough to get a spot. As far as skilled nursing goes, the facility is not accredited in a way that most insurance companies will pay for unless the patient first has a 3-day hospital stay--which is pretty rare except with dire illness. There's skilled nursing right on site that they pay for, yet my parents have had to be moved offsite to other facilities a few miles away that Medicare approves WHILE THEY ARE ALSO PAYING FOR IT AT LCG. So, most residents are paying top dollar for three levels of care that they will never even be able to get access to. They'd be better off paying for a independent apartment that has an attached dining room and saving the hundreds of thousands--in some cases millions--that it costs each resident to subsidize a few other people's health care. read more

I'm sorry to say I only had one experience with La Costa Glen. It was my first and my last!!! I was trying to set up an appointment to tour the grounds since my father came into town looking to relocate to a retirement community. I talked to a lady named Sue in sales who was so rude. I would ask her a question and she would say "I already answered that!" and if I asked a question about the deposit she would say "it's how we run our business over here at La Costa Glen if you don't like it you can look at other communities." The problem was she wasn't answer my questions I had to begin with, she just kept talking! She was so rude and I can't imagine how she talks to the elderly people that live there! I've been a resident at La Costa Glen for five years. It is well designed, organized, and run with a friendly tone and an openness to suggestions. As about the largest retirement community in the State, it has the most fellow residents one can find and the largest number of weekly activities. Situated ten minutes drive from the beach, in a delightful micro-climate, it has natural advantages. I'm sure that neutral experts in county gerontology would highly recommend La Costa Glen which is, indeed, how I found it. One Yelp reviewer, who must have been in a very bad mood, posted a criticism of a La Costa Glen marketing representative named "Sue". The only "Sue" I know in marketing is quite charming, highly experienced, and endlessly polite and sincere. Indeed, she devotes her off-hours to finding homes for orphan dogs that are adoption-challenged. If you don't like this "Sue", you just don't like people! read more

My parents have lived here several years, and I have become very familiar with the various levels of care and the staff and services at each level. I believe it is worth every penny. They have a recent ad out about actually saving money by living there, and I believe this actually can happen because you basically get a long-term care insurance plan along with your residence, meals, and lots of included services. But the best part of all, and the key to it being the wonderful place that it is, is the amazing staff. They try so hard every day to make each day the best possible for the residents. They work very well with residents' families and treat every resident as a valued individual. No institution is perfect, but this one comes pretty close! read more
