    Menu. Order at counter
    Cliff B.

In Gateway Plaza on 10th Street, a couple of businesses to the right of Luby's is LA Crawfish, a restaurant offering the unique combination of Cajun, Creole and Vietnamese food. The restaurant is larger than the front suggests. Past the front door you walk through the main dining room with brick and sparsely decorated pine walls dominated by a TV screen into the area where you order at the counter. The menu is displayed on the lighted sign behind the counter. A variety of boiled crawfish, shrimp and crab are available by the pound (your choice of spiciness), and sides include potatoes, sweet corn, andouille sausage and rice. These are served in a plastic bag to your table which you also cover with a plastic table cloth. Most of this is eaten with your hands (rather messy, but a hand washing area is provided down the hall) and shells are discarded onto the table cloth. When you're done it is easily picked up and placed in the trash cans. You can also choose baskets with tilapia, shrimp, oysters, salmon or peeled crawfish tails served with seasoned waffle fries or rice. Other offerings include various kinds of pho (a vietnamese soup), seafood gumbo, and various flavored wings. To drink there is iced tea, Pepsi products and some alcoholic beverages. I hadn't had good seafood gumbo for a few years so that's what I ordered (adding andouille sausage) along with some fries. My son ordered crawfish boil with sausage, a potato and corn. My son was amazed at the size and taste of the crawfish and loved it. He said it's the best he has had. The gumbo had a great flavor and consistency with chunks of shelled crawfish, snow crab in shell and chicken neck pieces with bone, one large whole crawfish on top, but mostly slices of andouille sausage which was delightfully spicy. There was some rice at the bottom. As I said, the flavor was great, but the crab pieces and bony chicken neck chucks were difficult to eat since I had to fish it out of the thick gumbo broth and figure how to get the bits of snow crab out of the shells. I didn't see any okra, normally associated with gumbo. I also ordered beignets for dessert. Don't expect traditional Louisiana style beignets. These were disappointing to me. They were like doughy french fries served on a pool of icing and dusted with a little confectioner sugar. Not anything like Café Dumond in New Orleans whose beignets are large square fried pastries covered with lots of confectioners sugar. My sweet tea was old and starting to turn. The owner / manager came by our table to ensure all was satisfactory and offered to correct anything non satisfactory. So I mentioned the tea. He checked it out, agreed with my conclusion and immediately brewed some fresh tea and brought me a new glass full. He and his staff seemed eager to please, hard working and willing to go out of their way to ensure the customers leave happy. I saw the pho at someone else's table and it looked very good. I'd like to return and try it. This is definitely not my wife's idea of a date place, but for others it just might be. I consider it more a guy restaurant as the crawfish boils are really messy. Note: The booths had wooden benches with very straight wood backs on a 90° angle and didn't look comfortable to me. However there are tables with decent chairs as well. There is plenty of parking in the shopping center parking lot. Overall I enjoyed the experience. The prices are reasonable. The service was good. The facilities were clean. They have a menu unique to the RGV, and you won't find better crawfish.

Okay, so I gave this place another try during the Lenten season and it's also crawfish season so they have fresh live crawfish available on the weekends. It was much better than my first visit, but still lacked flavor. But it's good enough for my cravings. My only complaint is that they need to work on that "boxed" seafood gumbo. I ordered one and it was NOT good. It's def not real gumbo since I make Gumbo from scratch using a roux and their gumbo was so BLAND. They also need to work on their poboys. I ordered a shrimp poppy for my husband and there were only like 7 shrimps...... and they put the fries inside the poboy, so it was all soggy.........

Placed an order by phone, I have the screenshot to prove it. My son went to pick up the order and they claim I never placed an order. They then continued to ignore him and he eventually left. So they are pretty much calling me a liar! I do not appreciate how they treated my son and I would like someone to own up to this mistake.

3lbs of crawfish with all the fixings

Food was great! atmosphere wasn't the best especially with the cleanliness of the location. Walking to the back area it was filthy as well I wasn't sure if the cashiers were changing gloves between interactions with customers then refilling drinks. The crawfish Pho wasn't anything extremely extraordinary but it was 3 out 5. we ordered 3 lbs of crawfish and I really enjoyed the flavor. But after seeing how dirty everything was I'm not sure I want to go back and risk getting sick. :/

I thought that all La Crawfish locations were created equal but that it not the case. My family and I used to order to go from La Crawfish almost weekly when we lived in Houston but this location was awful. The fact that they advertise what they are serving as pho is disrespectful. The broth was extremely bland and did not taste like anything. They put the protein (meat/seafood) in the broth so it is over cooked by the time you get it home. The protein needs to be with the noodles not in the broth, ever, even if the order is dine in. The basil was wilted, no cilantro in any and only one of the 3 noodle boxes had lime. We got no utensils or napkins or hoisin and siracha sauce. For $40.00?! We will not eating here again. I know that they are opening a Mission location but it sounds like La Crawfish locations are quantity over quality.

Good place, something different here in The Valley. The Crawfish is really good, the crawfish rolls so recommend it and also the rice with shrimp and crawfish.. deli deli. It was BYOB but not anymore. They sell few beers and bottle and fountain drinks. The only thing the person who was getting our order it was a little angry or I don't know. But should be more affable with the costumers.

    Medium garlic crawfish with corn

I do love my seafood and this place didn't disappoint. I ordered both the crawfish and the snow crab legs with medium garlic sauce and both was really good. I probably could have done without the corn and sausage, just seemed like unnecessary add-ons.

I knew it was a matter of time the Crawfish scene would hit the valley. don't need to drive 5hrs to Houston for the other locations. It is still a new establishment so customer service and other minor things should be corrected in a few weeks time. the crawfish batches is a hit and miss kinda thing..sometimes a bit over boiled and shells are too soft, but I'm not gonna complain too much on that...ordered about 30lb for 7ppl...gone.... Oysters were good...the Japanese fusion one was the better of the 3...surprisingly the Pho was not bad at all...better than the other places in mcallen...needs more Crawfish in my opinion. fried rice was okay...bit salty and again not much Crawfish...however if you are already ordered Crawfish just tail them in the entrées yourself...wings were okay...some me were undercooked, but management took it off our bill and offered the beignet fries..and those were awesome...hope this place stays longterm...oh..its also BYOB

Always wanted to try this place out. We finally stopped and it didn't disappoint. We ordered the 3lbs of crawfish with a sausage link and two corns. Also ordered the crawfish egg rolls and the crawfish pho. Everything was delicious. I'm not a pho fan but it tasted good.

The damage. Very messy but delicious!

A Hidden Gem for Mexican Seafood -- Don't Sleep on This Place!…read more As a traveler from California in town for a swim meet, I was on the hunt for good Mexican seafood and stumbled upon La Costa Grill. Based on the reviews, I had decent expectations -- but this place blew them out of the water. The ratings honestly don't do it justice. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was warm and genuine. We were greeted by the hostess and seated right away, even during the lunch rush. Then came a wonderful surprise: our server brought out a mini skillet of the most incredible black refried beans for dipping, alongside four salsas ranging from mild to hot, all served with tostadas -- compliments of the house. Back in California, you're lucky to get one salsa, let alone refried beans as a free starter. It immediately set the tone for the meal. Our server was knowledgeable and genuinely helpful with recommendations. We ended up sharing a lunch portion of paella, an octopus taco, and a fish ceviche tostada -- and every single dish delivered. The octopus taco was a standout; served over a layer of refried beans, it was a flavor combination I didn't know I needed. The ceviche tostada was fresh and bright, and the paella was satisfying and well-seasoned. I also have to give our server extra credit for her transparency -- she mentioned upfront that the paella leans heavier on rice than seafood. That kind of honesty is rare and really appreciated. We ordered it anyway, and we were glad we did. If you're visiting McAllen and want authentic, flavorful Mexican seafood with outstanding service and hospitality, La Costa Grill needs to be on your list. I'll absolutely be returning before I head back home.

Mambo's: The Restaurant with Nothing on the Menu…read more In the heart of downtown, nestled between a laundromat and an empty yoga studio, sits Mambo's -- a restaurant shrouded in mystery, local legend, and chronic ingredient shortages. With its bold neon sign flashing "EAT!" and its doors always open, Mambo's lures the hungry and curious like moths to a flame. But those who enter quickly learn the truth: Mambo's never has anything to eat. The concept is baffling. One might assume Mambo's is a pop-up art installation, a social experiment, or perhaps a prank that got out of hand. But no -- Mambo's insists it is a legitimate restaurant. It has a full staff, a printed menu with mouthwatering descriptions, and an upbeat hostess named Carla who greets you with the confidence of someone about to seat you for a five-star meal. Yet once you sit down and begin to order, the Mambo's experience begins. "We're out of that," the waiter says, the moment you mention the house special. "What about the octopus ?" "Also out. Shrimp?." "Do you have anything?" "Let me check." You'll wait twenty minutes while the waiter disappears into the kitchen, only to return with a shrug and a glass of lukewarm tap water. It's the same story every time. No steak, no salads, no sides, no soup. Occasionally they offer crackers. But they are always "just about to run out." The mystery deepens when you notice that no one ever seems to leave with food. Customers walk out dazed and confused, muttering things like, "They had nothing. Again." And yet Mambo's remains open, night after night. The Yelp reviews are poetic in their disbelief: "Waited 45 minutes for a grilled cheese. They said they were out of bread. And cheese. And a grill." - Sandra T. "Mambo's is the place to go when you're full, but want to be disappointed anyway." - Alex G. "Five stars for the vibe. Zero for the food. Because there was none." - HungryAndSad89 There are theories, of course. Some say Mambo's is a money laundering front. Others claim it's a metaphor for late-stage capitalism. A few romantics believe it's a test of patience and that those who endure the hunger will be rewarded with the most delicious meal of their lives -- someday. But that day never seems to come. And still, people return. Maybe it's the music -- a never-ending loop of jazz-funk that distracts from the hunger. Maybe it's Carla's unwavering optimism ("We might have fries tomorrow!"). Or maybe it's the faint hope that this time, Mambo's will have something to eat. But they won't. They never do. In Conclusion Mambo's is a restaurant in name only -- a culinary paradox where the atmosphere is rich, but the plates are forever empty. It's an enigma, a joke, and a strangely comforting ritual for those who frequent it. Because in a world of uncertainty, one thing remains constant: if you're hungry, don't go to Mambo's. Unless you're just there for the water. Which, incidentally, they are also running low on.

Food: The seafood was incredibly fresh, seasoned perfectly, and packed with bold flavor. Every bite tasted like it was prepared with care. The sauces were rich without overpowering the natural flavor of the seafood, and the portions were generous. You definitely leave satisfied. Pro tip: I highly recommend ordering bottled water with your meal -- it pairs perfectly with the seasoning and keeps everything balanced while you enjoy the full flavor experience. Service: Ruby was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Our server checked on us consistently without being intrusive, and everything came out quickly and hot. Great customer service. Thanks Ruby! Ambiance: The atmosphere is lively, clean, and comfortable. It has that fun seafood-boil energy while still being relaxed enough to enjoy good conversation. It's a great spot for family dinners, friends' night out, or even a casual date night. Overall, Krab Kings delivers on flavor, service, and vibe. We'll definitely be back!

**UPDATE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH BBB AND ATTORNEY GENERAL**…read more First time visiting and honestly the food was GOOD, but the service on our table was a disaster. We had a group of 6 and specifically pointed out the exact platters we wanted directly on the menu to our waiter multiple times. Somehow the order was still entered completely wrong. What was supposed to be around $241.31 before taxes, fees, and gratuity somehow turned into over $400 worth of food. When the food came out, it immediately looked excessive and not what we ordered, but since it was our first time there we weren't totally sure at first. We got the manager involved, and I think there was some misunderstanding like we were trying to avoid paying the bill entirely, which was never the case. We simply wanted the bill corrected closer to what we originally ordered. To their credit, they did work with us and got it down to $338. Again, the food itself was really good, but the wait staff seriously needs more training before handling larger tables because this was way more stressful and expensive than it should've been.
