This was our first, and last time trying this Restaurant. Should open at 11, arrived about 11:20 and you would have thought they were still closed. Tables had chairs up on them. No one to seat you, dark inside, had to setup chairs off of the table. We were about to walk out when someone finally came and told us that we have to order first at the counter. Person behind the counter was not much help in recommendations. Seems you pay for everything separately. Pieces of corn, pieces of potatoes, sausage halves, shellfish by the pound. Clams were on the overhead menu, was told they don't offer those. Got past that and had asked for sweet tea. Well it came out not sweet. Once the food appeared which I will say was. Way quick we started our finger food adventure. Ordered both shrimp and crawfish. Seems like a lot of work to have to tear heads off shrimp, shell and de-vain. Won't more you with the rest. Quality of the food was not what you would expect from a restaurant that specializes in Cajun Cuisine. Last but not least, wear and tear is very evident especially in the restrooms. In Gateway Plaza on 10th Street, a couple of businesses to the right of Luby's is LA Crawfish, a restaurant offering the unique combination of Cajun, Creole and Vietnamese food. The restaurant is larger than the front suggests. Past the front door you walk through the main dining room with brick and sparsely decorated pine walls dominated by a TV screen into the area where you order at the counter. The menu is displayed on the lighted sign behind the counter. A variety of boiled crawfish, shrimp and crab are available by the pound (your choice of spiciness), and sides include potatoes, sweet corn, andouille sausage and rice. These are served in a plastic bag to your table which you also cover with a plastic table cloth. Most of this is eaten with your hands (rather messy, but a hand washing area is provided down the hall) and shells are discarded onto the table cloth. When you're done it is easily picked up and placed in the trash cans. You can also choose baskets with tilapia, shrimp, oysters, salmon or peeled crawfish tails served with seasoned waffle fries or rice. Other offerings include various kinds of pho (a vietnamese soup), seafood gumbo, and various flavored wings. To drink there is iced tea, Pepsi products and some alcoholic beverages. I hadn't had good seafood gumbo for a few years so that's what I ordered (adding andouille sausage) along with some fries. My son ordered crawfish boil with sausage, a potato and corn. My son was amazed at the size and taste of the crawfish and loved it. He said it's the best he has had. The gumbo had a great flavor and consistency with chunks of shelled crawfish, snow crab in shell and chicken neck pieces with bone, one large whole crawfish on top, but mostly slices of andouille sausage which was delightfully spicy. There was some rice at the bottom. As I said, the flavor was great, but the crab pieces and bony chicken neck chucks were difficult to eat since I had to fish it out of the thick gumbo broth and figure how to get the bits of snow crab out of the shells. I didn't see any okra, normally associated with gumbo. I also ordered beignets for dessert. Don't expect traditional Louisiana style beignets. These were disappointing to me. They were like doughy french fries served on a pool of icing and dusted with a little confectioner sugar. Not anything like Café Dumond in New Orleans whose beignets are large square fried pastries covered with lots of confectioners sugar. My sweet tea was old and starting to turn. The owner / manager came by our table to ensure all was satisfactory and offered to correct anything non satisfactory. So I mentioned the tea. He checked it out, agreed with my conclusion and immediately brewed some fresh tea and brought me a new glass full. He and his staff seemed eager to please, hard working and willing to go out of their way to ensure the customers leave happy. I saw the pho at someone else's table and it looked very good. I'd like to return and try it. This is definitely not my wife's idea of a date place, but for others it just might be. I consider it more a guy restaurant as the crawfish boils are really messy. Note: The booths had wooden benches with very straight wood backs on a 90° angle and didn't look comfortable to me. However there are tables with decent chairs as well. There is plenty of parking in the shopping center parking lot. Overall I enjoyed the experience. The prices are reasonable. The service was good. The facilities were clean. They have a menu unique to the RGV, and you won't find better crawfish. read more

Okay, so I gave this place another try during the Lenten season and it's also crawfish season so they have fresh live crawfish available on the weekends. It was much better than my first visit, but still lacked flavor. But it's good enough for my cravings. My only complaint is that they need to work on that "boxed" seafood gumbo. I ordered one and it was NOT good. It's def not real gumbo since I make Gumbo from scratch using a roux and their gumbo was so BLAND. They also need to work on their poboys. Here's what we tried: Shrimp-toast (or toast-shrimp?): Big, fried, shell-on, head-on shrimp like you find on Asian buffets. Not quite as good as some I've had, but still crispy and flavorful. More than I could eat so I have leftovers. Yum. Fried shrimp basket with waffle fries: good flavor and not overly-breaded. Tasted good with the Cajun seasoning. Spicy Garlic Chicken bites: they were definitely tiny bites and not nuggets. Good flavor and crispy. Comes in different flavors. The flavor was in the spice, not a sauce. Walking to the back area it was filthy as well I wasn't sure if the cashiers were changing gloves between interactions with customers then refilling drinks. I thought that all La Crawfish locations were created equal but that it not the case. My family and I used to order to go from La Crawfish almost weekly when we lived in Houston but this location was awful. The fact that they advertise what they are serving as pho is disrespectful. The broth was extremely bland and did not taste like anything. They put the protein (meat/seafood) in the broth so it is over cooked by the time you get it home. The protein needs to be with the noodles not in the broth, ever, even if the order is dine in. The basil was wilted, no cilantro in any and only one of the 3 noodle boxes had lime. We got no utensils or napkins or hoisin and siracha sauce. For $40.00?! We will not eating here again. Its crawfish season, so I assumed it would be fresh. It was the grossest i had ever had. I ordered 2 lbs. I only eat the tail and when i attempted to peal the shell, it was all mushy ! There were only a couple edible ones. I also ordered an order of magic rice. It was completely over cooked. I complained and was brought a new lbs of crawfish as well as magic rice. I knew it was a matter of time the Crawfish scene would hit the valley. don't need to drive 5hrs to Houston for the other locations. It is still a new establishment so customer service and other minor things should be corrected in a few weeks time. the crawfish batches is a hit and miss kinda thing..sometimes a bit over boiled and shells are too soft, but I'm not gonna complain too much on that...ordered about 30lb for 7ppl...gone.... Well I thought I was going to get a good boil but I was wrong. First you go to the counter and place your order. You pay for it as well. You get a number and a plastic table linen to put in your table. I don't mind doing this stuff on my own but in case you like things to be done for you this isn't the place. I order the garlic and butter and added some heat. The medium has no heat so if you want it spicy try the hot. The bag looked green so I wasn't sure why it would be a green color but it could be the spices used. I order snow crabs but wasn't given any tools to open. I didn't know where to ask so I just used my hands. The meat was so stuck to the shell that it was an indicator of how over done it was. The services wasn't that great either. I willl definitely not be back. For the price and the quality of food, not worth it. Now this may be the flavor you like but for me personally it wasn't good and was lacking in flavor. For being newbies to the crawfish scene, this place was awesome! Atmosphere was calm and quiet when we first arrived so the lady at the register took her time explaining the items on the menu. They had a special happening, purchase 2 pounds of crawfish and receive an Artic-like mug free with a selfie showing your mug. Once our food arrived the gentleman gave me a small lesson on how to eat them, then I had it down! So delicious and perfectly spiced. The condiments of hot butter added a great flavor. One of the worse experiences we have had getting pickup from McAllen location, we have tried the Houston locations many times and even then it is hit or miss. The MCallen TX location we ordered Beef Brisket Pho, two orders of broth, and a Crawfish Cajun Pho. Everything was bland no flavor at all, the broth is usually clear brown and for this location they put the meat already in the broth and super oily so by the time you get home all the meat is over cooked. No sriracha or hoisin added to bag. All the seafood was already in the broth so it was rubbery. They really need to do quality control since this isn't our first LA Crawfish it will be our last in the RGV. I feel bad for the new location opening soon in Mission..... read more

This place is surprisingly good! Being from Louisiana I'm very picky about my seafood. The crawfish is more Asian style which means the seasoning is put in the bag after u pick ur level of spice and flavor. I usually don't like that but the seasoning is so good it actually works.
