Cane to celebrate my father in laws 75th birthday here while the wai was a little longer than expected the service was great our server was very attentive and always asked if we needed anything . Today I had the half rack of ribs with green beans and Cole slaw. This location is very consistent in their food and service. Wait staff are always polite, friendly and respectful. If they happen to forget something, they will remember and make it right and better. The food is very good, full of flavor, go to is country fried chicken, lemon pepper grilled fish, chicken tenders, cornmeal fried fish, combo of ribs and chicken tenders. Their appetizers are excellent, cheese dip, salsa with dips; onion rings; and the desserts are to die for especially the apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And then there are the regular drinks and cocktails, Texas size frozen margarita being my favorite. Some friends of ours tell us the Pain Killer is also delicious, but limited to two. It sits facing the expressway in between Saltgrass and PF Chang's. There is easy access off the highway, and plenty of parking, including spaces for the handicapped and for online pick-up orders. The building is well maintained and landscaped, pleasing to the eyes. I was greeted as I entered and asked what size table I would need, and shown to a booth. There was no wait at 12:15 PM on a Friday. The décor is nice with some sparse faux greenery, brickwork arches separating the multiple dining areas. I particularly like the unusual palm leaf fans in the central dining room. The atmosphere is casual but nice. It can get a bit loud in peak hours. Cheddar's is known for "country, home-style" cooking. From scratch. I have been to Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen a few times before, and each time I ordered the New Orlean's Pasta and loved it. The pasta has a great flavor with shrimp, chicken, smoked sausage, peppers, onions and penne pasta in a spicy homemade Cajun alfredo sauce and served with garlic bread. This time, I was meeting some friends for lunch and decided I would try something else, and ordered the Chicken Fried Steak which comes with two sides, gravy, and Texas toast... To be honest, I was it was OK, but not exceptional; I've had much better. The servings were not very generous for the price, the green beans were flavorless and not evenly cooked. My friends seemed happy with their choices of a burger (which looked great) and some chicken wraps. The server did very well, and kept our drinks full. He was bilingual and did an excellent job. Sure it's the weekend, but we had to raise our voices to hear the other person at the same table. $50.00 for a meal you could purchase frozen at Sam's or Costco as far as the spaghetti with chicken tenders. Salmon was over cooked and broccoli rice and cheese mixture was cold. Dessert was a cake with rum and coconut, but it was not tasty. I took one bite and no more. My nephew orders the monster cookie, and I tried the ice cream which tasted like a cheap version you can get at the grocery store. And they heated this up so much that the chocolate syrup was watery! The waitress assured me it was the right one but I've dined at Cheddars enough times to know what the Caesar pasta salad looks like. Secondly, when the correct pasta came out, a few bites in there was a bug in it. And finally, when the manager came around to discuss the bug issues, only an apology was offered. A person in our group had coupons for free chips and queso. They told our waiter about the coupons and said he would have to check with the manager if it was ok for us to use them. Not sure why he had to check but whatever. He comes back about 10 minutes later and says we can use them. Didn't bring the chips and queso with him so he had to go get it. That took another 10 minutes. The chips and queso weren't worth the price(free). Finally he took our order. Just to keep this short I ordered a Monte Cristo sandwich. The other people with also ordered assorted items. 15 to 20 minutes later 5 if the 6 orders show up. No Monte Cristo. I assumed our waiter was going back to get my food. Nope. I finally was able to flag him down. I asked if I was going to get my food. He seemed surprised that I had no food. He says he will go get my order right away. He stopped on the way to the kitchen to take an order from another table. Finally I got my now cold food as my friends were finishing theirs. No apologies or offer to comp some if the bill. Speaking of the bill it took close to 20 minutes to pay our bill because the waiter had hosed that up too. Needless to say that just based on the level of service we will never go back but throw in pretty awful food too I would have to be starving to death before I would eat at any Cheddars again. read more

They have a good selection of items and the service was great! Since it was our first visit our waitress brought us two small packages of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies as a thank you, at the end of our meal. We were planning to attend a concert by a local elementary school a few days later and the price of admission was "a dozen cookies", either homemade or store bought. When I inquired if we could purchase addition Neal cookies the waitress sent over the manager to get an answer. The manager said she would give us more cookies. She wouldn't accept payment! I am always treated well at the cheddar's in Mcallen. My partner loves to eat here even when we go out of town we always end up finding a cheddar's. Mcallen cheddar's always has the best service out of all of them. They are always busy but they don't let that affect their service. They should send the manager to Harlingen to help them out. I love the pain killer I've tried the burgers, the chicken stripes, the salads, etc. always satisfying and fulfilling and the price is reasonable. The employees are accommodating and nice! I honestly don't know how I ever convinced myself to try this place again. Cheddars is the definition of disorganization, bad service and exceptionally slow service. I'd also question their sanitation as well. That's a whole other issue that I won't get Into for this review. We went looking for dessert and drinks at 10 pm. The hostess asked us twice if we wanted to see a menu with pictures. I guess their 4 desserts are hard to visualize by reading the menu? She was persistent about wanting us to see pictures. Thought that was very weird. We sat at the bar area. Children were running circles around the bar. Another table was yelling for a server so they could order. A lady was sweeping the booths and the floor with the same broom. Several employees just walking around appearing to do nothing. Other employees were running around like it was a zoo, the sign of complete disorganization. Several tables needed to be bussed but sat dirty. We asked the server what the seasonal dessert was she didn't know so she proceeded to tell us about the other ones. We asked her again and she said she's never had it. So we asked her to ask someone who may know. She was like "oh, yeah!" We ordered a chocolate cake, iced tea, and glass of wine. The iced tea came out in 3 minutes. After twenty minutes of waiting for the wine and dessert, while these children were running around the bar, and not seeing our server for 15 minutes, we got fed up and left. Back to our old faithful choice for 10 pm dining....BJ's. Always disappointing at every location, Dallas/Arlington, Denver/Parker, and McAllen. All three trips were epically horrible! It's funny that they are always busy! I guess people just like cheap garbage, even if they have to wait. It's just cheap! All three experiences in three different cities all had the same issues, disorganization, slow service, and missing wait staff. How ironic! read more
