We ate here twice while we were staying in Akumal. Both times were delicious. The seafood is fresh and perfectly cooked, and portions were big. In fact, don't over order like we did. We had dinner here on a Friday night. The restaurant is located outdoors which was perfect on a nice February evening. My wife ordered a glass of wine that was filled to the top of the glass. They brought chips and pico as we waited. I ordered the shrimp with tequila sauce and my wife the mushroom cream shrimp. Both plates came relatively quickly. My shrimp was delicious. The dish came with rice and vegetables. The sauce with the rice was good. My wife enjoyed her dish also. Her sauce had a nice wine taste. Service is generally quick, and most of the servers spoke decent English so it was easy to order. We had the seafood for two - grilled prawns, grilled fish, squid and octopus, and it was very good. Soooo maybe you don't want to eat here. This is the quintessential tourist trap. We came here because it was highly rated, looked pretty cool, and was right across from the beach we were at. We were very disappointed. I ordered a Pina colada, shrimp cocktail and fish tacos. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were not deveined. The fish in the tacos were just cut up fish sticks, and the drink was tiny! And all of this was very overpriced. Was paid around $40USD. Prices are what you'd expect given their target clientele, but the atmosphere, even in Covid times, is fun and beachy, and the fish IS really fresh... ...and it should be: because they go out fishing for it almost every day. This is another longstanding local fixture in the Akumal area. It is fairly touristy, so the food is not too adventurous. We did receive good, attentive service and they have free wifi if you need it. I ordered something that wasn't on the menu, camarones a la diabla, and they were excellent. Not quite as hot as I would like, but with the habanero sauce on the table I was able to kick it up to where I needed it. My wife had the tequila shrimp, she loved the creamy sauce and would order it again. The prices were designed with tourists in mind, it's not cheap but the food and the service was reasonable. I don't know that I am dying to go back, but I am glad we tried it out. read more

Hadn't come here before as the name "the Fisherman's Cave" sounded a bit cheesy but we have it a shot fortunately. Everyone in the party was quite happy with their meal including my 11 year old son. We were hustled to buy honey and for a fishing trip. We also bought margaritas that were incredibly poor. They had zero alcohol and they were all juice. We could hardly drink them. Where do I start with my beloved La Cueva del Pescador?! One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Since I was 9 years old I have been coming here to Akumal for family vacation. La Cueva del Pescador was the spot for mixed ceviche & bloody marys for a mid day snack & fresh seafood dinner! I remember when they had sand for floors and a jukebox inside in the corner. The freshest seafood in Akumal hands down. Say HI to Carlos, Pedro, Gordo, Ali, & the LCDP family, they are the BEST! I have been fishing with them over the years and caught many of my own fish; they cook it up however you like, for free! I remember being 13 years old and catching my first barracuda and bringing it into the restaurant by the fish's eyeballs, this barracuda was almost as tall as I was. They cooked it up three ways for us. There are pictures all over the walls inside of fishing trips right here in Akumal bay from many years ago. So many memories, I cannot name them all BUT some of the best times & dinners I have ever had in my life. Its the best place to get stuck in a rainstorm under the palapa with lush greenery everywhere. The BEST MARGARITAS, CEVICHE, LOBSTERS, FISH (anyway you like it) and oh my goodness the fresh KING CRAB I had was just caught, it was one of the best boiled whole crab I have ever had, no joke! Do yourself a favor- DON't GO HERE! We got our food, it was so grossly overcooked...couldn't eat it, literally. Akumal is our favorite spot in the Riveria. This little dive has earned a permanent spot in our hearts. It's a short walk from the beach- right across the street from the dive shop. No dress code. Just walk up and grab a seat. The tables are a cool petrified wood type. You are greeted with a "hola" and a basket of chips and salsa. Tip: for those that like spicy stuff.. Ask for the hotter sauce and mix the two. Very good! I always do the shrimp tacos and my wife does either the steak tacos or quesadillas. Hers is good. The steak is well cooked with great flavor. The shrimp tacos... Amazing!!!! Add a little of the guac that comes with it and some Of the hot salsa and it's heaven in a tortilla! They pair up perfectly with a cold bottle of Modelo or a Margarita.. Which is also very good!! You can't go wrong here! Great food, great service, and great atmosphere!! read more

We came in to have a nice, relaxing meal after a long drive. Menu is brief but good looking and it's pretty much seafood. We ordered Langoustine (Very Good!!), Guacamole and a salad and everything was good, until the clock showed 9:20 PM. Every single person who worked there, was rushing everyone to leave. In our case we had ordered a pitcher of margarita (how fast can you drink one glass?!?!) and they wanted us to take it to go. We told them we were ok and drinking at the table, this guy said that they were putting chairs on top of the tables and that they needed the one we were using, so we moved to another. 2 minutes later we just didn't feel like dealing with it and left. We love this quaint, no-frills little fishermen's restaurant. I had possibly the best fish filet I've ever had. It was fresh and delicious and light. My husband had the filet of fish stuffed with seafood, and it was tasty as well. The salsa was fresh and amazing! The margaritas are a must!! Super strong but refreshing. Outdoor seating was nice when the weather was nice, but we went there once after it had rained and it was pretty damp and musty there, which was definitely not appealing to the appetite. They lose a star from me for not accepting credit cards. They are the only proper restaurant in Akumal that I ate at that didn't accept them. Only discovered it was cash only when we tried to pay by card - luckily we had just enough pesos on us as the local ATMs were all out of service. Food was mediocre for a place touted as great seafood. I had lobster which was overcooked yet managed to have a raw piece at the end too. The service and food was so authentic and fresh that you didn't want to stop eating - even if you're about to go to the beach in a two piece....The food baby is TOTALLY worth it! Our table ordered ceviche, beef fajitas, chicken quesadillas, shrimp in garlic sauce and seafood stuffed fish. Everyone loved their plate. They brought out chips and salsa that had the perfect kick while we listened to the sweet sounds of a Mariachi band. We also ordered a pitcher of piña colada which was tasty and then one of margarita which was stronger but definitely yummy. I loved how homey the location is, we parked right behind the restaurant for $20 pesos the hour and then went to the beach for free.
