This bakery along Metropolitan Avenue has been serving the neighborhood for a long time, therefore I don't want to criticize too much. With that said, I have had their baked goods several times over the years and I am not a fan. My friend brought some over to my house the other day and it confirmed my opinion. Nothing special, especially the Pignoli, which tastes artificial in flavor. That was actually bad. If you compare it to a good one like from Lety's of Jackson Heights, you'll know what I mean. Buy pastries at your own risk! I decided to treat myself to some bakery goodies the other day so I went into La Dolce to buy a large eclair and a brownie. At home, I saw that some of the chocolate icing had fallen off of the eclair so I decided to start there. I popped some chocolate shavings into my mouth and.... yuck! No creamy sweet chocolate taste. A taste that I'd never tasted in my life before and have a hard time describing. Chemical? Refrigerator? I don't know but definitely inedible. The brownie, encrusted with chocolate chips, beckoned me. It had been stored in another tray, at the other end of the refrigerated case, so surely this one would be fresher. Better. But no! The chips had the same horrible non-food, non-chocolate taste. $12 of goodies tossed into the garbage. I did not go back to complain because I rarely buy pastries. However, it's sad that the owner doesn't have a way to mark the pastries with a "sell by" date. My guess is that the items that I had bought were sitting in the case for weeks, waiting for some unlucky person to choose them. Yuck. read more

I would give them no stars if I could! I went there July 3th to buy a dozen pastries. I noticed that the store was warm, the temperature was in the eighties outside. There wasn't any air conditioning or it was on very low. I think the pastries went bad from the heat in the store. When we started eating the cake and we noticed that the pastries had a real funky flavor. We threw them away. I paid over seventy dollars on these items. I needed something sweet to take back to my parents as a thank you for babysitting. And just as this idea popped into my head was when I walked past La Dolce Italia. It was fate! A very old school Italian bakery, I felt like this bakery and I went way back. The problem I always have when going into a bakery is: Everything looks so good, I just want to buy it all. The person behind the counter was super patient while I faced the internal conflict of what to get. After careful consideration, I decided on getting two lobster tails, an apple turnover and a piece of crumb cake. She packaged everything up and I went on my merry way. Before moving on to those sweet treats, I would like to comment on the place itself. I couldn't get over how clean it was. There wasn't even a finger print on the glass looking in on the cakes and cookies. The cappuccino maker looked almost brand new. I was super impressed. Back to delicious desserts! Honestly, I can only speak for the lobster tails which tasted super fresh. The pastry was fluffy yet had a nice crunch when biting into it. The whipped cream inside was airy and not too sweet. I will definitely grab another one from here next time I pass. As for the other items I bought, my family devoured them before I could try. Their thoughts: yummy and delicious. My husband always picks up desserts from here and he has never once encountered an issue. Kind and friendly service. Recently we got the chocolate mousse cake for our anniversary. It was THE best chocolate mousse I've ever had. Fresh layer of chocolate (that was still soft days later) and semi sweet cake. It wasn't overpowering which some mousse's can be. It was also a shorter cake which made it more tolerable to eat. Perfect size, height, and just the right amount of sweetness for a chocolate mousse cake. Will definitely get it again in the future. Also tried some other slices in the past including: red velvet (good but a bit too sweet for me), tiramisu (good) and some different cookies. The fruit tart wasn't bad. We stopped into the bakery today to pick up a cake for my mom's birthday. We also grabbed two cupcakes for the ride home. Both my husband and I immediately spit out the cupcakes. It was absolutely inedible - tasted like cardboard, freezer burn and just this horrible stale taste. We are NOT picky - but this was simply inedible. We scraped the side of the cake when we got home to see if it tasted like the cupcakes, and sure enough, it was even worse. Totally stale and inedible We had to toss both cupcakes and the entire cake in the garbage. So upset, as we spent almost $50 and now have to order a cake from another bakery by tomorrow morning. The baking begins early within the basement of La Dolce Italia Bakery, as they have another location which is serviced and supplied by the original location. The location I stop in on a semi daily basis to grab a cappuccino and some treats for the house. As with most all Italian bakeries the Italian cookies are always well represented, but really never grasp my interest. I think I broke the Italian tradition of my family for being the first to not purchase them on a weekly basis and give them out, I do it with bread instead. For me, I always buy a cannoli, biscotti or an little tiramisu if I am feeling like a special treat for my breakfast, but when I need some dessert to bring to a dinner, La Dolce always has great choices that will not break the bank. I loved what Maria did for my daughter's birthday (4/22/2022). From the first time I spoke with her, she's made it very easy for me. She gave me everything that I had dreamt of a cake for a girl's debut - soft, fresh, and feminine, very simple yet elegant. This cake has an ombre peach design which is what I asked for, with a few roses and leaves on it. I love how she was able to exactly do it the way I envisioned the cake to be.
