Martha's is a staple bakery in Queens, now expanded into other boroughs, and they've done incredibly well over the years maintaining quality and consistency in their desserts. There's usually a line of some length during peak hours and especially around the holidays. You can tell by the sheer volume of baked goods and cakes available in their window displays that they sell a lot daily. This location is on the main drag of the little downtown section of Forest Hills, the baked goods in the front window display connect to a tall and long glass counter along the left side of the store that extends almost to the back. At the back middle and along the right side of the wall there's seating for about two dozen people at small cafe tables. They carry an assortment of traditional cakes (full and sliced), pies, cookies, pastries, cheesecakes, cupcakes, ice cream and coffee/tea drinks. A wide variety of flavors in each, so you're bound to find something sweet to satisfy most here. They are a classic bakery so from what I can tell, they don't carry items that are gluten, dairy or nut free. I've purchased their apple pie, fruit tart, berry napoleon, red velvet and chocolate fudge cakes from this or other locations in the past and they're all solid choices for desserts to share with a larger group, though I find a lot of their cake options to be on the richer side. My most recent encounter with their cakes came in the form of a slice of their seven layer cake $9.95 which is thin layers of yellow cake alternating with chocolate cream mmm pretty tasty, and their caramel cake $9.95 which had a layer of chocolate cake in the middle, sandwiched by caramel cream and white cake on either side. The latter had a pronounced caramel flavor that was enjoyable though a bit too much cream for me. My preference would be for their chocolate cakes over other cake flavors here. Their apple pie is one of my favorite apple pies anywhere tho! read more

I love their cakes! My current favorite, which can only be found at their Forest Hills location, is the Dubai cupcake. It's absolutely amazing, and the filling is very generous--it feels like heaven in every bite. Another favorite of mine is the chocolate layer cake: rich, velvety smooth chocolate that isn't overly sweet. The only thing I don't agree with is that they do not clearly tell customers that dining in adds an extra $1 charge to each item. Yes, check your receipt. I'm expected to tip my waitstaff and also pay an extra dollar per item just because I chose to dine in. For example, the cupcake is usually $4.75 to go, but they charged me an extra $1 for dining in. Their cake slices are usually $9.50 to go, but I was charged $10.50. I also tipped 20%, so the added charge felt frustrating, especially since there was no clear notice. When I asked the waitstaff about the $1 charge, she said it was entered that way because I dined in. When I later called about it, the manager simply said, "Next time, just order to go if you don't want to be charged extra." That response was disappointing, especially since there was no visible sign explaining this policy, and their dine-in menu does not show separate pricing. I really think management should fix this to avoid misleading customers. Transparency matters. Don't get me wrong--I would still come back because their cakes are amazing, but from now on, I'll always order everything to go. read more

Over the years, I have tried many of their desserts since it's one of the only decent dessert options around the area. However, it would not be my first choice if I had others. With that said, my whole family and many of my friends all agree that their best item is the Berry Napoleon. That is the one cake that I do enjoy from this shop. We often buy a whole cake for a group gathering or birthdays. As for dining in, there's always a lot of people inside the store and it gets a bit loud. Not my favorite place to relax and chat with my friends. That's why I only buy takeout when I do get the Berry Napoleon. I think I do prefer the Astoria original location more. read more

Martha's Bakery is probably the most popular Bakery in Forest Hills. I came on a Saturday night and it was packed. The host was nice and immediately greeted us. Since the plan was to order to go, we were directed to the line against the desserts. Time flew by and it seems we were standing on the wrong side. I guess the host was overwhelmed. I ordered the flan. It was about $7-$8? I tried to eat it in the car but there was no spoon in my to go bag. The juice of the flan was also spilled on the bottom of the flan so I didn't even want to open it until I got home. As soon as I got home, I immediately wanted a bite. I was very underwhelmed with the size considering the price. Taste? It had an additional fruit taste to it I can't pin point but it doesn't belong on plain flan. I could not finish it. No, seriously! have you ever had a Napoleon, well these Napoleon's has fruits in them. They are a bit sweet so you may want to eat it in portions. You know, like that candy; Now and Later. Same concept with the Napoleon pastry, eat some now and eat some later. They have breakfast items as well as hot drinks. I purchased a blue velvet cake, a mousse cake and my names sake, a Napoleon. Martha's bakery has always been a staple for me when it comes to desserts. Not only are they kosher but they have a wide variety of treats which are made with love and delicious. On this particular visit I decided to try their coffee and I regretted it. The cashier recommended the frappe because I wanted something strong. What I received from the barista was a cup of whipped air. I took 2 sips of actual coffee and the rest was foam (as seen in the picture). A novelty that has worn off a bit, it is easy to see why this place is popular. But the reality is the quality is just okay. The apple strudel is burnt on the outside creating a tough pastry. The ice cream doesn't have a ton of flavor. The carrot cake was dense and standard in taste. I have been here a couple of times and sadly there's nothing that's super memorable. Service is good though they get really busy and it took a while to get our check. There are so many pastry shops nearby. Save the $10 a piece plus and go elsewhere. read more

This place is located in the heart of Forest Hills, Queens. This is one of my go-to bakeries for cakes. The service is excellent, and the staff are very organized. When you walk in, the hosts greet you and ask whether you're there for takeout or dine-in. I usually come here for takeout, so I haven't dined in at this location yet. The workers are quick and always helpful with suggestions, and the cakes and slices are consistently fresh. The bakery is often busy, with long lines and many people choosing to dine in. It's a great spot to hang out late at night--enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a delicious slice of cake. I highly recommend it. This place is always super packed and I definitely understand why. They have such a huge variety of cakes for all ages but my go to will always be the Berry Napoleon. It is just do flaky and creamy but not too sweet and I have yet to give it to wontons to try and been given negative feedback. This bakery does in food seating as well as take out and the line for takeout is always huge so I always make sure to call in to preorder birthday cakes do that the transaction can be seamless. I've had Martha's before thanks to friends who've brought over their cakes, but this was my first time visiting in person. Nice, spacious, and clean spot. We stopped by for dessert during the afternoon, and the experience didn't disappoint. Service was great, the place is well-organized you can either grab something to go or check in with the hostess to stay. We all picked a dessert, and we all loved what we got. I had the mini passion fruit mousse cake, and honestly, it might be one of the best desserts I've ever had perfectly balanced: lightly sweet, slightly tart, airy, and just the right size. Stopped in for a birthday celebratory vegan cheesecake and matcha. My companions had a tres leches cheesecake and an oreo cheesecake. First time I tried the hot Matcha tea with almond milk-it was okay. I thought it was nice and creamy but a little tart, you have to add your own sweetener. Some of the pictures that I posted here were from the last visit a few months ago--all of the deserts are great. Service was okay today, sometimes when it's really busy you get ignored but eventually someone came to give us the check. Ambiance is good--lots of seating which is comfortable. Apart from Williamsburg, this is another location that I always go to. I love Martha's Country Bakery a lot for its pastries and cakes! They have the best cakes ever! I always go for the plain Napoleon slice and this time I got there, I just got the Strawberry shortcake and tres leches. Tres leches was kind of wet and spongey. I love the strawberry shortcake more because of the strawberries and fluffiness of the cake. The cream has a nice soft consistency that melts smoothly in your mouth. Not that sweet either! There's a lot of seating for dine in and the ambience is somewhat loud and can get crowded at times so it's good for loud groups. You have to wait in a line along the window of cakes to order. Maybe I'm partial to Martha's because this cafe is usually where I meet up with my best friend for sweet treats and deep conversations. Their very berry Napoleon pastry, strawberry banana cake and cappuccino are my favorites. The layers of the very berry Napoleon cake is light and flaky and is a delightful contrast to the perfectly sweet custard cream in between. The strawberry shortcake is also the perfect sweetness and fluffiness. Service is usually good. The cafe can get very busy and crowded during peak hours. Ambiance is lively. This is one of the best bakeries in New York City. I've been coming to this location for years--whenever I'm in Queens or landing at JFK, I try to stop by before heading back to Princeton. I visited late on Friday the 21st to pick up my usual cheesecakes and Black Forest cake. The young gentleman helping me wrote down my big order, I paid after waiting for him to get my order together 10 mins later and headed home. The next day, I opened the boxes and realized most of the order was wrong. Only three items were correct, and I was charged for items I never received. I called the store and was placed on hold each time, which is why I'm now writing a review. My suggestion for management: please have staff show customers the items in the box before sealing it. With the long lines and busy counter, it's hard for customers to see what's being packed. A quick check would prevent mix-ups like this. My review is strictly about the service, not the food--Martha's desserts are excellent. I'm still frustrated about my incorrect order, but I hope next time the packing process is handled with more attention to detail. read more

The pastries and desserts here have a high reputation for a reason! We dined in and tried their tiramisu cake slice and lemon coconut cake slice. One slice is definitely enough for two to share. The tiramisu was extremely creamy and had just the right amount of coffee taste in it. The lemon coconut slice was very heavy on the lemon so if you love lemon flavored desserts, this is the one. For dine in, they serve the slices on ceramic plates and also add some whipped cream on the side. Great place to get some dessert (you can also take it to go). Coming here is such an experience! Be prepared to wait for a table if you want to eat in but sometimes you are lucky and can get sat right away, which is what happened when I came in with my friends. We each got a different slice. I went with the red velvet cheesecake. So rich and delicious, almost too rich to finish the entire slice. The slices are HUGE, this slice lasted me three days! Apple pie slice looked great, I could smell it from my seat and it smelled amazing. The last slice we got was cherry pie, my brother devoured it! Chai latte was nice but I could probably skip it next time. Super busy while we were there but the staff was super friendly and really on top of everything! read more

This place always seems to be packed. It was my first time dining in. The noise level wasn't too loud, and the service was quick. The Mexican Hot Chocolate was fairly priced and was probably the best hot chocolate I've ever had. The sweetness was subtle, and so was the slight kick. The Black Forest Cake was spongy but not very moist without the cherries. The icing and frosting didn't stand out to me, which is unfortunate considering the higher price. Martha's Country Bakery is a "slice " of heaven. They have so many varieties of baked goods, coffees and lattes you will not leave empty handed. Fruit Napoleon cakes overflowed with pastry cream and fresh berries. Slices of Mississippi Mud and Dulce de Leche cheesecakes are large enough for two but so many flavors make choosing difficult. Beautifully colored pastel colored macarons gave a hint of spring which coincided with blooming cherry blossom trees in NYC. Last but not least we washed it all down with a double espresso and fragrant green tea. This Queens location is cozy with comfortable seating. Prices area lttle steep but the quality of the pastry is exceptional. Lines were a bit long but its worth the wait. read more

This is my 2nd time visiting Martha's Country Bakery (first time wad to that Astoria location). This is always such a worthwhile trip to Queens. The sugar rush starts right away. The delicious display of desserts, fun Fall decorations, and the sweet hostesses. Be prepared for it to be a little crowded, and for a short wait. The staff are attentive and quick. It does get a little loud, however there seemed to be quite a few people on dates, so not so loud that you can't hear each other. I was slightly underwhelmed by the Key Lime Cheesecake bar (I wasn't expecting the layer of blueberries, it barely had any key lime flavor, and was just a fair felt slice of cheese cake). Absolutely love the bread pudding. The berry Napoleon was a wonderful surprise. Imagine the best strawberry shortcake with the crispy buttery and sweet Napoleon layers instead of shortcake. So delicious. Overall prices are not bad, especially considering the large sizes and great quality of the food and service. read more
