This restaurant is indeed such a gem! First let's talk about the appearance - my fiancé and I have been on a journey of finding local quaint restaurants where the food is amazing and doesn't require us to drive into the city (DC). This place checks the box - it's inside of a large house, a bit unassuming on the outside but the inside is gorgeous. Ample seating, has an upper level balcony for two tables for couples looking for a more intimate dinner experience, and a pianist playing lovely music in the background. Now the food - food is good. Simple ingredients, not too much but enough that I wouldn't say the food is bland. For appetizers I ordered the tagliatelle option and my fiancé ordered the meatball option - both were delicious. For dinner I ordered the mushroom ravioli dish and requested salmon to be added for protein, and it was very yummy and filling. Waiters are so friendly and kind, and just a warm place to enjoy a lovely dinner. We ordered the soufflé dessert and I personally wasn't a fan, the flavoring was great but I don't like the consistency so instead while my fiancé ate that I got vanilla icecream on a cookie shell (substituted the assortment of sorbet that it originally comes with) and I enjoyed that very much. read more

We recently celebrated a birthday at La Ferme with a larger group and were seated in a private room upstairs, which was a nice setting for the occasion. The food itself was very good--I ordered the filet mignon, which was cooked well and was the highlight of my meal. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. When ordering drinks, the waiter specifically asked whether we wanted salt on the rim for our margaritas. We said yes, but the drinks arrived without salt. When we politely asked to have it added, the response felt dismissive and came across as having an attitude. More concerning was how my dairy allergy was handled. I mentioned multiple times that I have a dairy allergy and specifically requested no parmesan on my fries. The waiter seemed to have difficulty understanding the request. When my filet mignon arrived, it was topped with a sauce that I suspected contained dairy. I brought it up to the waiter, who confidently insisted the sauce did not contain dairy and was simply a peppercorn sauce. After I asked him to verify with the kitchen, he returned and informed me that the dish would need to be remade without the sauce. For an upscale restaurant, I expected much better allergy awareness and communication from the staff. Food allergies should be taken seriously, and servers should be knowledgeable about menu ingredients or willing to verify information before assuring guests that a dish is safe. To add to the disappointment, our party was charged an approximately 22% automatic gratuity without it ever being mentioned by the server. While I understand that many restaurants add gratuity for large groups, it should be clearly communicated beforehand rather than discovered when the bill arrives. read more

I haven't been here for over a decade and unfortunately it has gone downhill. The ambiance is still warm and charming. The neighborhood is cute and parking is easy. The wait staff is attentive. But the food just wasn't very good and did not taste French. I had the roasted chicken. The skin was soggy and there was a bone in it even though it was breast meat. The sauce congealed before I finished my meal. The sweet potato side had cumin or coriander spice in it which did not taste good. The Brussels sprouts were shaved and dry. My mom's filet mignon was grissly and difficult to cut through. My dad's mussels were good. But his side of asparagus was again seasoned with cumin or coriander which just are not French flavors. The dinner bread was stale and difficult to chew. We ordered the Grand Marnier soufflé an hour in advance. It was flat and mushy on the inside. More like pudding than soufflé. Not sure if this was just an off day or the main chef wasn't there tonight, but we do not plan on returning . I hope it gets better because it has been a local favorite for years. read more

I had wanted to try La Ferme since 2020/2021 when I first learned about it. Of course when my husband suggested it for a date night tonight (a Friday) I jumped at it. It has to be the most charming restaurant in the DMV. From the outside to the inside with the high ceilings and wooden beams, it oozes charm. It's dated but in the cutest way imaginable. There's love piano, which only added to the charm (have I used that word enough yet?). We were seated as soon as we arrived and were given the massive wine and food menus. They were a bit awkward due to size. I ordered a glass of the German Riesling and asked the server if it's sweet. His response was that it's fruity. Yes, but is it sweet? I was a bit surprised that a server at an upscale restaurant didn't know the difference between sweet vs fruit-forward. I got it and took a chance. Thankfully, it was a dry wine that was fruit forward. I got the scallop & lobster risotto appetizer and the seafood pot pie for my entree. Both were rich, creamy, and full of seafood goodness. I was pleasantly surprised that the pot pie came with string beans on the side, as it wasn't listed on the menu. The only thing I can knock La Ferme for aesthetically is the women's restroom. The floor tiles and walls are beautiful and stick with the French theme. The stalls themselves give off high school gym bathroom vibes. They were metal with chipping paint. I say they knock those suckers down and replace them with some beautifu,l wooden bathroom stall walls and doors. It would make SUCH a difference. The rest of the restaurant transports you to another place, but those stalls bring you right back to a place that no one particularly wants to visit (maybe a road trip rest stop?). I have always found that ketchup or dipping sauces can fix most French fries or pomme frites. But I always do a little happy dance in my seat when they are so perfectly done that you do not need or want anything to dip them in. That was my experience last night with the truffle fries that accompanied the filet mignon. It was the first time I have eaten beef in over three years. I had planned on the salmon but when I saw the plate I was swayed and not disappointed. I'd recommend the onion soup and radicchio salad for starters and finished the meal happy with the chocolate soufflé with vanilla sauce. I wrestled between 4-5 stars as we sat in a corner for 25 minutes without taking a drink order. But as the waiter explained the error and apologized for it, I allowed the food to sway me. read more

I have been to La Ferme several times, I'd estimate five over a couple decades, for lunch (I believe once for dinner). I would eat there again, happily. It is not in a neighborhood I frequent. If you are nearby, you already know the place; it's a posh area, so I'd suppose anyone with a home within walking distance can afford the prices regularly. That is to say something positive. This is a fancy place for an occasion, whether a business function or a first date to impress or a birthday or anniversary. The menu matches the ambiance. It is excellent. It is not nouveau. For example, I have had the escargot starter. I like escargot. The funny aspect of snails is they are, if you look into, peasant food. I mean going back to antiquity. But in our culture, they anything but. They have become upscale now (that happens: consider salmon or polenta). I have had meats and seafood, even calf sweetbread. My wife has had the Dover sole, which I appreciate but isn't for me (it's sophisticated for being mild if you like it or bland if you don't). Service is impeccable. It's the style you associate with fine dining. My goal in writing this little squib is to ensure you know La Ferme is a "hidden gem." Our party was served French onion soup that was way too cool (both this time & the previous visit), and our entrees were also lukewarm. Looking past the temperature, the French onion soup tasted wonderful, but other parts of the meal were underwhelming. The most unpleasant part of the morning, though, was the runner responsible for bringing us our food. From the start, he was borderline hostile, and at one point snapped loudly and disrespectfully at us. He shouldn't be customer-facing. Just a lovely place to celebrate our anniversary. Beautiful old house with quaint French country decor on the inside. We ordered the skirt steak (specials menu) and filet mignon (regular menu). Both pieces of meat came out to perfection. My filet mignon had the perfect pink and juices. I don't believe I've had a better piece of meat anywhere else. We added the potato gratin and it was creamy and delicious. For dessert, we got the praline and Grand Marnier souffles. I have never had souffle before so had to try it since it was supposedly, "The best dessert in town!" Our server informed us that we needed to order this at the beginning of our meal since it takes 45 minutes to prepare. My family and I have dined and lunched at La Ferme many times and we always found the atmosphere pleasant and food exceptionally well prepared and served. I recently hosted colleagues from Asian countries and invited them for a lunch at La Farme as I wanted to surprise them with a wonderful French food. . The service was without reproach - polite, pleasant and helpful; regrettably, the food was a huge disappointment. The bread/baguette was stale and impossible to bite into. The onion soup was excellent, but the gazpacho was watery and, guessing from my guest's response, not particularly tasty. Although some of the main dishes were acceptable (expected outstanding), the branzino emitted a rather strong fishy aroma. The most disappointing, however, was the chocolate souffle; although the outside was baked, the interior was watery, rather than light, airy and creamy. When asked the waiter and the chef about the possible "unbaked" suffle, they assured me that is how it should be. Apart from the watery interior, we found chocolate pieces which did not melt during baking. We did order the souffle at the start of our order, so to allow sufficient time to bake it. It would have been nice, had they removed the suffle from the bill or offered some other dessert instead. Sadly, we will not be returning to La Farme. Below is a AI description of a suffle: "A properly made soufflé should have a soft, creamy center, not overly watery. The texture should be light and airy, with a slight jiggle when gently shaken. This might have to be one of my favorite restaurants that I have recently been to. My girlfriend and I went here for our three-year anniversary, and I am happy to say that they did not disappoint us. The hostess and staff greeted us as soon as we walked in and gave us a seating area on the second floor floor balcony without having to ask, making the night all the more romantic. The most important thing for a restaurant for me is to have a fantastic ambiance, to which surpassed expectations with the decors rustic elegance and faint murmur of live piano music. The most memorable is the soufflé; repeated scraping of the ramekin good! And the brussel sprouts, a surprising treatment of the vegetable. Wife and I recently tried this place, and we were frankly disappointed. First off, I'll say that service is fine. There are plenty of waitstaff and it's not difficult to get one of their attention if you need something, even though the place is quite large with many tables and patrons. However, where they fall off is on the most important part - the food. The French bread placed on our bread plates were old and stale as the crust was hard and the inside was tough. I had the lobster bisque to start, and it was thin/watery with little flavor and room temperature / not warm. My wife had the quail, which we found to be half-cooked. While the exterior had a completely grilled look, the interior was not fully cooked. Our waiter took it back, and returned about 20 minutes later with a new quail that was properly cooked. For our main entrees, my wife had the risotto with lobster, shrimp and scallops. I think this was the only dish that met expectations as it was fine. I had the pork chop that is stuffed with spinach and supposedly foie gras mousse. I'm not sure where the latter was as it looked purely like spinach with not accompanying mouse. It was supposed to come with a truffle sauce, and while there was a sauce, there was no hint of truffle. Lastly, the most egregious part of the dinner was a side order of green beans, which were merely boiled in salted water resulting in a plate of mushy green beans. We recently had our office Christmas party at La Ferme. This was our 2nd Christmas party held at the warm and slightly old fashioned restaurant held deeply in a fancy neighborhood in Chevy Chase. Last year's party went so well - and the food was so good - that we decided to go back again this year. La Ferme did not disappoint! Upstairs in the private room, we looked down on the full dining room. Everyone was enjoying a lovely dinner. The dining room is like walking into a French country inn. The Christmas decorations only added to the charming ambiance. The service provided by the staff was flawless. They were constantly on us - offering appetizers, drinks, refreshing our plates, our table. They know how to run a restaurant. We had a limited menu due to the size of our party. I had the veal chop which was to die for!!!! Thick with a great crust seared on the outside! Ok so maybe the sides were unremarkable. But the main stage - the veal - was excellent! I think La Ferme gets a bad rap due to its age (and perhaps the average age of its customers). But, truly, if you want a place where you feel you are treated well, served some excellent food and don't feel out of place even if you are over 50, then go to La Ferme! Service was attentive, but didn't seem the strongest, as all our dishes kept being brought to the wrong customer, I had to place my order three times before the waiter got my order right, and in the end, I'm pretty sure I got the wrong wine (not a Sauvignon and an awful Riesling or something else). Very nice decor (very French, complete with a giant rooster), balcony seating, big cozy fireplace, good food, limited menu choices, inattentive, slacking service, huge on-site parking lot. Unique architecture and venue but a bit overpriced (even by Chevy Chase standards). We came here on Valentine's Day, and with the prices they were charging, we were expecting better service. We had a reservation and arrived on time. We were quickly seated. We were lucky to get a table in the corner which is quieter. Tables under the big roof would be much noisier. We ordered cocktails and our main dishes: sea scallops (tiny scallops, contrary to our expectations, but nicely presented) and the other dish is lobster salad. Both were delicious and came relatively promptly. Fresh bread was presented as well. However, we waited for an hour for the dessert despite prodding our waitress multiple times. What a let down. They clearly forgot to place our order or forgot to tell the kitchen we were done with our main course. Either way someone dropped the ball somewhere in the chain of command. It was nearly impossible to get the attention of, or wave down, our waitress. We were expecting a culinary event on the special occasion, and yet in the end I can't say it's worth coming all the way out here for the French experience. What a special anniversary dinner we had at La Ferme! The food was delicious, as always, the server was absolutely kind and patient! While the portions are small, they are delectable. We had gravlax, foie gras, seafood risotto, and Truite Amandine. A lovely glass of Pinot Noir, For dessert, one of their special soufflés, (chocolate!) and a creme brulée to die for!! Now the food. The stars of this meal were the snail fricasse and the quiche. These were both delicious. The quiche was light and flavorful. Also good was the onion soup. This is one of my favorite places to come for a nice celebration. I've been for a friend's bday, retirement party, and Thanksgiving... and now my Mom's bday! It has this homey feel but with a nice elegant touch. The service is wonderful and you won't even notice your water or coffee glass is already refilled! We went for brunch and it was a great 3 course meal. I enjoyed the potato and leek soup and my mom had the French onion soup. For the next course, I had the frittata with , red pepper and steak with a side of greens beans and hash browns! My mom had the chicken and spinach crepe. We both really enjoyed our dishes! Greens beans aren't my favorite vegetable, but these were cooked nicely! For dessert, my mom had sorbet and I had the crepe with hazelnut and caramel sauce with a dusting of powdered sugar! Omg. I'm not sure why this place gets bad reviews. Reading them almost made us change our reservations and I can tell you that would have been a mistake. First off, our waitress was a lovely young lady with a ton of patience (my in laws asked a lot of questions). She was helpful in navigating the menu, specials and drinks. Second, the food - wow. Tasted homemade. There wasn't anything we ordered we didn't like. Everything was tasty, including the warm bread that kept coming out. Pro tip: book dinner resy's early. This seems to be a neighborhood spot, we got there at 5:25. By 7pm is was packed! The liver and lobster ravioli are spectacular... and yes, order the soufflé at the start of the meal. We arrived on Saturday night for our 7:30 reservation and the restaurant was buzzing with seemingly longstanding, well-dressed patrons. We were promptly greeted, seated, served bread and offered wine recommendations. The Sancerre was the best I've tasted! A few of us placed similar orders of endive salad, French onion soup, trout almandine and finished with grand marnier and praline soufflés which were ordered early for preparation time. We all agreed that the trout almandine was the best of three highly renowned and popular French restaurants in the area. What a great meal. Came with my parents and grandfather for my dad's retirement dinner. Parking was so easy, there's a big lot behind the restaurant that still had multiple open spaces!! They start out with bread for the table which was so good, chewy, and warm. My mom and I had to stop eating it or else we would've ruined our meal! We got two of the same appetizers, I'm not sure exactly what it was but I think it was called La Terrine de Gibier, the photo with the slaw and cut bread with a cut of meat on the middle. I typically don't like these types of dishes but this was very very good. For entrees, I got the almond crusted trout and switched the potatoes for rice, it was delicious, however the fish a a tad bit over cooked. I still ate the whole thing though!!! My parents split the filet mignon, pictured on the tray and another on a plate. The meat was done perfectly, my dad gave me a few bites, but he and my mom loved it. My grandpa got the calf's liver, he really enjoyed it and loved the mash potatoes with it. Personally not a fan of animal organs but he loved it, it's one of his faves. For dessert we all got our own, I got the poached pear and it was absolutely ICONIC. BEST dessert I've had at a restaurant in ages!! It was so so good, light but creamy and decadent. My grandpa got the sorbet and loved it, I had a little bite of the raspberry scoop and it was so tart and yummy. My mom got the profiteroles which were yummy but she liked mine dessert more. And my father got the chocolate mousse cake, he absolutely devoured it. The service was great. We had our reservation at 6 and left around 8:30-8:45. Great place and foods, but, this time, it was a flaw - Les escargots (snails) were not to the "expected standard" OK!.. they were not in their shell (which can be practical) but all together mixed with mushrooms... that was a big no-no & mistake because you didn't know if you were eating snails or mushrooms and the sauce was dull and tasteless, instead feeling garlic and butter - if they still persist serving the escargots that way, I won't never eat them again - Also, I had the magret de canard (duck), that I asked "to be pink" the skin was mushy instead being crunchy and the meat too well done - the baby broccolis served with it not drained before placed in the plate which resulted to be mixed with the duck liquifying the sauce - not nice either - I mentioned that to the chef who came to my table - When you ask for tea they give you a small hot water teapot for 1 cup - that is a ridiculous size because you have to ask the waiter few times to refill it with hot water instead getting a bigger pot- Their Cesar salad is to die for - it is absolutely fabulous. What a nice place. Great food and service in a beautiful atmosphere. My wife usually isn't anxious to return to any restaurant soon after we visit, but La Ferme is an exception. Started with a French onion soup and an endive salad. Both amazingly good. I had the salmon and my wife had the liver. She said it was the best liver she's ever had. The salmon was perfectly cooked and so good. Dessert was a souffle and a piece of the chocolate and Grand Marnier mousse cake. we ordered dessert when we ordered our entrees since the souffles take time to make. Both excellent.
