Entrees were fried pompano fish from the Gulf of Mexico via Florida served with steamed vegetables in a creamy sauce and entree 2) was a shrimp and corn tamale in this yummy creamy sauce Both dishes were fantastic. I've been coming here off and on for some time. Having now been to CDMX I totally get the vibe this place is going for. The food is really good. Service was friendly. I had the Pampano fish which was excellent. It had this amazing crispy skin and the buttery sauce was so good. My mom enjoyed her salmon. On my list for ages and a birthday lunch was the perfect opportunity. I walked in and it was pretty empty so I was seated quickly. The decor was an interesting take on latin nautical chic; definitely an underwater mood. Started with chips, salsa and a poloma. I finished all of them so I suppose that's a positive rating. Next were the grilled oysters. I never thought cheese and oysters would go together but oh man. Great combo. My main dish was the octopus, grilled to perfection, tender and plated beautifully. Had this bookmarked for forever and finally had a chance to swing by. Pretty quiet for a Friday night so it was easy to snag a table. Their menu is extensive and I'd love to try everything if I could. Instead we opted for the trios, one of tacos and another of empanadas. Out of the tacos, I think the fish was my favorite. The lobster is a close second though it was a lot more chopped up than I was expecting. The chicken empanada was the best, though arguably they were all fried to perfection. Even the chips and salsa were hitting just right. Only challenge of the evening was trying to get out the door. For whatever reason, it took a very long time to get our check, and even longer for our server to return with our card. I watched him serve multiple tables even carrying our card around before the hostess noticed us and went to flag him down. Service otherwise was just fine, so maybe it was just forgetfulness? I could be critical and give it a 4 but this is a 5 kind of place. Calamari was a little oily but still very good. I loved the natural ceviche a lot. I thought portions were big and good. The catch of day dish was amazing and very light and fresh. Highly recommend even though it's 45 bucks. Arguably the best dish of the menu. Wife didn't like tacos that much but didn't say they were bad but just not great. Churros were flawless. Kids menu is also very solid and good. Do I wish it was cheaper, sure. Parking isn't free most days in the day it's 6 bucks but when most of us go here weekdays it's 10 and for those that go when downtown is busy you can pay to park about 20 bucks right next door. Ambiance is pretty much perfect. The vibe and decorations is incredible. I'd say ambiance is 1,000,000/10. Service is good, too. read more

Tried this spot again. We came for the ceviche and was not disappointed. If you want to avoid the crowds come on Sunday. If you want to socialize with the masses, come in on Saturday. My husband and I went for lunch today, we were famished! The place is right in Downtown, next to a parking lot. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and inviting, nice ambiance music, the staff is very helpful and friendly. As we sat down we were given some crunchy nachos, with an amazing tomatillo sauce. We started with tostadas de atun, which were bite sized nachos filled with tuna, and avocado, the tuna felt fresh and well seasoned, the nacho itself was stale. My husband ordered the grilled octopus, this was a beautiful dish, impressive plating, the octopus was so tender, fresh, flavorful, and that guajillo sauce was to die for! Even the yuca was delicious! Recommend 100%. I had the ribeye tacos, this was a lunch option, which was two tacos, served with rice and beans on the side and guac. The beans were good, the rice nothing special, guac was fresh, and the tacos...well the tortilla was very soft big and really good, but the ribeye itself lacked salt, and came all chopped up in this tiny pieces, I didn't feel like I was eating ribeye at all, also being a Mexican restaurant it lacked plancha. Overall the experience was not bad, I would come back for that octopus and maybe try another seafood dish. read more

Service was friendly but the food came out soooo slowwww.... We were there for over two hours and only ordered HRW menu and an app/ceviche. Hoping this was a fluke... I'm not a fish fan and this place won me over. We came for lunch on a Saturday and it was surprisingly not busy, but I bet it gets packed for dinner (or it should!). We had a large party and our waitress was amazing, so friendly and accommodating. The whole staff was really; they made the experience really great on top of the delicious food and drink. I had their strawberry margarita (sweet like I like it) and then had their sweet corn tamales with bacon and shrimp - a dish that was on a famous Houston food dishes list at some point. I can see why - it is super unique and tasty! It is also quite rich, so be prepared to take some home with you or better yet share with someone so you can try more dishes. I visited on a Friday evening and sat at the bar. I was quickly greeted and given chips and a bowl of delicious creamy green salsa. I ordered a guacamole margarita that was made perfectly and the Tajín rim was a nice touch. For dinner I opted for the Pulpo Ensenada. The octopus was tender but still had an appropriate amount of chew. There was more oil than I would prefer but the picked onions on the salad helped to balance out the richness. All in all it was a good meal, but I am deducting a star due to the large amount of fruit flies at the bar. Rolled in for lunch over the weekend. Boy was it worth it. The space was inviting and clean as usual. The staff was nice and attentive. Since I was working I didn't get a drink but we had the complimentary chips and salsa while we waited for our appetizer. The carpaccio de pulpo was everything. The candied pepitas was so good with it and the salad on top. I'm salivating thinking about it. I have had this a few times before and I have to have this when I visit. I didn't want to get the itis so I just opted for just protein. My friend had the trio of tacos not pictured. They were delicious too. Now the Aguachile de Ribeye was so unexpected but it really worked. It is light and doesn't not come with sides so please keep that in mind if you get it. However it delivers in flavor. First of all ~ I LOVE this restaurant. Ive come to know it pretty well and fell in love with it after going throughout the past few years. It has never disappointed me. Second ~ I brought my boyfriend here because we both decide to start eating lighter and add more fish into our diet. I had the pompano al limon and my bf had the tilapia I believe I can't remember. We both loved it. The food tasted amazing as always. My boyfriend was very happy naturally made me very happy as well :) Third point ~ The service was great! Our waiter was really nice and attentive. We went here a week or so ago for dinner. Ambiance is relatively modern with lots of colors and a definite seafood/Mexican theme. Service was lacking, in that they reallllyyy took their time to come to our table and take our order... and we were one of maybe four groups there. But the food, or at least the tamal, made up for it. I have never had a tamal that I would rave about as much as this tamal de elote. Seriously if you're not sure what to get just get it, be aware though it's very filling. I probably filled up too much on chips and queso fundido! Those were good too, but not as memorable as the tamal. Margarita was good, too, nothing bad to say about it. Overall my rating is really for the tamal which is a 5. The other items didn't particularly blow me away, but were very good. If you're downtown and looking for Mexican and/or seafood, give them a try! read more

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants but alas no more. We went on a not busy happy hour Friday. The place is nice although my chair was wobbly and we had to switch it. I had to ask for the food happy hour menu. There was a special on a beer and later we found out why...they were over a year and a half expired! I would not expect an establishment like this to try to get rid of expired beers to their customers. That is just bad practice. We told the waitress and she instead offered a draft and still charged us. We ordered the poblano dip because we had a Yelp coupon. The dip was not great. Just a lot of cheese. AND they wouldn't honor our coupon later because they said it was only meant to be a small sample. It should've been stated on the coupon. We always use our Yelp offers at the end of meals. Anyways, no effort to give a discount on the dip or anything. For an expensive meal we left highly unsatisfied. The sopes from the happy hour menu were hard and flavorless. The octopus was the only thing that we really enjoyed. And later that night I got very sick... Not sure if from the oysters or the expired beer. Sad that this experience happened at what used to be our go to restaurant near the theater district. read more

I first heard about la fisheria from a yelp event yeaaaars ago. We tried their ceviche and it just stuck with me. The first time in the restaurant itself was in May coincidentally during Latin Restaurant Week. We tried waaaay too much stuff but that just meant more to take home! When we first walked in (and I noticed this the 2nd time we came in as well), the check in counter and front area of the restaurant smells off. I think it's the sewage that unfortunately runs all through downtown Houston. Everything else in the restaurant was clean such as the bathroom so I don't think it's their fault but just something I noted. Maybe they could use some extra air fresheners up front to help with it... For food, we ordered the ceviche natural and ostiones a la parrilla to start. The ceviche is nice and fresh, but kind of wished there was more variety in protein aside from just the fish. Then, for entrees we had the pulpo ensenada, tamal de elote con camarones, sonora ribeye, and the pulpo de la parrilla. Out of these entrees, I would say the pulpo ensenada beats out the pulpo de la parrilla with flavor as well as side dishes. I can also say, the star of the show is the tamal de elote con camarones. There's a reason why it won awards, right? I was scared on how heavy it might be since the sauce looked very creamy but it was actually a thinner sauce that faired well with the corn tamale. For dessert, we had flan which was good but pretty much run of the mill flan. One unique thing about La Fisheria, is they have a great rewards program! You get a free app or margarita when you sign up, and after that with each visit there's additional dishes you can get! You could make this your next local HH spot with your gang! read more

Ok, I'm from New York and am visiting Houston for the next five weeks. I have traveled all over the world and have had a lot of cuisine. Good and not so good. Houston's food scene is amazing! Honestly, I've been here two weeks already and every single time I've ordered food from a restaurant. The experience has been fantastic! It's kind of mind blowing how amazing the food has been every single time except my second time getting something as simple as black bean soup at this restaurant. The first time I came, I just wanted some thing light for dinner, and I wanted to take it out to go. I wound up ordering the black bean soup and it was the best black bean soup I've ever had. They took so much care in preparing it for me for me to take it to go, they wrapped it in saran, wrapped, they put I believe it was cilantro in the middle of the soups for a nice garnish. I had a huge bag of tortilla chips and two green sauces. I don't know what the sauce is, but it was amazing and it came also with a piece of bread. I honestly could not believe how good that soup was and how good the bread was and how good the chips were and how good that green sauce was! I could not wait to write a review about this place because I was so pleased!!! Cut To: About a week or so later... I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by and get the soup again to go with my dinner. When I got home and opened the bag, I could not believe how different the presentation was and the amount of soup and chips I had... along with, how different the green sauce was. It's almost like I went to a completely different restaurant and that is, in my opinion, very bad service. The soup is pretty much half the amount I was given the last time. It was barely warm, there was no garnish of cilantro or parsley (I'm not sure what it was the last time), the amount of chips is almost 1/3 of what I received the last time, and the sauce is thicker and spicier and not as tasty. This is ridiculous and extremely disappointing. I was so excited to rave about this place, but inconsistency is disappointing and honestly it makes me not really want to ever go back because I'm not sure of what I'm gonna get, I tasted the soup, it seems fine. I'll have to warm it up. The chips... they're OK. The sauce... I can do without. And the bread... meh. Consistency is key, in my book. I won't be back. read more

Came here for a date night with my girlfriend and saw this restaraunt participating in the Latin Restaurant Week (ends 06/30). She was running behind so I made a reservation for 9pm. Once we arrived, I realized we didn't need the reservation as it wasn't too busy, but honestly kinda shocking because we loved the place! On arrival, we were quickly greeted by the hostess. She sat us and our waiter came soon after. We started off with the Margarita de Tamarindo and a Moscow Mule which were both great. We then ordered from the Latin Restuarant Week menu. For our first course, we got the Crema de Langosta and the Ceviche. Both were amazing but I'd have to give the bisque the upper hand. We then decided to both get the Pulpo a la Parrilla even though we try to share everything, because it just looked so good. The octopus was perfectly tender and the yucca was a nice addition. The guajillo sauce was pretty good but I think it would do better with a different sauce. Either way, I would still order it again! We finished off the night with tres leches. The dish was beautiful and mine was great. I think my gf's had a little too much liquid but no major complaints. We will gladly come back for a date night some other time! read more
