Great spot for a quick fix if you're craving Mexican food. It's lowkey off Manor and walking inside brings me right back to CDMX. I have had this place bookmarked for years....Not gonna lie, place looks sketchy on the outside and a total dive inside, but the service and the food is fantastic! Queso, chips and salsa hit first....Salsa has a great bite, chips are fresh and with a couple scoops of salsa we bring the way over priced queso to life. (see photo 9.99$) Wife goes with the ground beef Enchiladas with red sauce...me chicken enchiladas with green sauce. Plates were piping hot....Beef was good, Chicken tender...both sauces were excellent...rice was delicious and fresh....And the beans were the bomB!!.......Definitely will be headed back to try out there breakfast menu. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place whenever we were trying to find a quick place to grab breakfast tacos before heading out of Austin to go back home to Houston. It's a very cute hole-in-the-wall place that shares a lot with a couple of other places too. There's plenty of parking and we were able to find parking easily. You can either dine-in or order takeout here. We meant to order takeout but we ended up just dining in and they were so nice and accommodating. We tried the bacon&eggs tacos and potato&eggs tacos. They were both so good and a large portion for such a reasonable price! The red and green hot sauces that they brought out for us to eat were also pretty good and spicy. Found this little place by accident and I am glad I did! Service was great and the food was fairly priced and tasty. They offer a different lunch special each weekday. Chips were good but the salsa wasn't as spicy as I like. Overall, I will return if ever in the neighborhood but I wouldn't make a special trip. Too many good places near home. read more

Would do four and a half stars if I could. Let's talk about the restaurant environment first. This is the first authentic Mexican restaurant I've found in Austin, because let's be real, Austin loves to hype up its diversity in food but rarely anything is authentic. This was a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant, with its non matching chairs and tables, the random instant ramen and candy they sell at the counter, the Mexican candy and Canels gum sold, $1 tacos, etc. I'm from Corpus which has lots of Mexican restaurants like these, and I'm Mexican so I felt very at home here at La Fruta Feliz. Staff was also great and hardworking. Now let's get on to the rating of the food. The barbacoa was hands-down the BEST barbacoa I've had in my entire life. Juicy, tender, flavorful, absolutely amazing. I also got papas con huevos, huevos y chorizo, and bacon egg and cheese. They were all pretty good but the barbacoa was top tier. Now I have one issue; the tortillas. They should be fluffy and floury, these felt like some you could get at HEB. Not that great, maybe I should've gotten the corn. It's not that big of a deal though. Either way, still great food. I also got a horchata and an orange juice. The horchata was light and refreshing, it was really good. The orange juice tasted like they literally just squeezed a bunch of oranges and skipped the extra stuff you get from store-bought orange juice. It was really great. On the menu. they have a bunch of juices with mixtures of different fruits. I recommend trying them, they're probably very fresh and delicious. I bought a bunch of those breakfast tacos to bring to my best friend's white family. They're not very good at Mexican food (for example; they heat their tortillas up in the microwave??) so I'm really excited to have them try this place. They love good food and are open to trying food from different cultures, but I don't think they've had genuine, authentic (overusing that word, oops) breakfast tacos. read more

The Short: Their tacos boast a strong combination of great flavors from the meat and super cheap prices. Walking in what seems like a convenience store, La Fruta Feliz has a small cafe look but runs it restaurant style. The owner started off speaking Spanish, so it was a little bit of a shock, but she'll quickly switch to English once she knew I was way out of my league. Despite my butchered attempt at reciting my order in Spanish, she was really nice and friendly. After sitting down, we were offered menus and complimentary chips and salsa. Their chips have a lot of substance as well as a big crunch. Their salsa may not have the taste of fresh tomatoes, but it definitely has the right level of spice, where your tongue can feel the heat, but it's not too overwhelming. Definitely a fan. I ordered three tacos: the Pastor (marinaded pork), Barbacoa de Chivo (goat), and Lengua (beef tongue) tacos. You could choose to have the tacos in a flour or corn tortilla, and I had all three of my tacos to have a corn tortilla. I typically don't like corn tortillas, but theirs were toasted, had a lot of substance, and tasted great. I felt like I was eating two layers of hearty tortillas rather than a weak piece of bread - a plus! The Pastor had a tasty and strong flavor from the marinade. The pork may not have been as tender as I hoped it would be, but the taste was surely there. Also some pieces of pork were 80% fat, which greatly contributed to the flavor. The Barbacoa de Chivo is a rare find for a taco, and it was made deliciously. On the first bite, you could taste the gamey-ness of the goat. The goat dripped oil packed with intense flavor. Some restaurants serves beef tongue that is way too overdone. The Lengua here is very tender. The couple of fatty pieces already make this taco worth getting. However, It would be nice if they were cooked in a way that would bring out more flavor from the meat. But if I came back, I would get this again! 3 tacos for a little under $6? A great way to grab a quick and cheap meal that'll still stimulate the taste buds. No heavy sauce or excessive spices needed at La Fruta Feliz: for each taco, it's all about the meat's original flavors. For an extra kick, try adding their green sauce! read more

ah, it doesn't get much better than ambling to La Fruta Feliz on a gorgeous, temperate day to nourish one's fast-shriveling flesh bag with the most divine plate of chilaquiles, beans, and a perfect fried egg dressed in a delicious emulsion of hot chilies, onions, and garlic. I tried this place for the first time last week. I ordered two tacos al a carte. A chicken fajita and a beef picadillo. My boyfriend ordered a carne guisada, gabrito and a pork taco. All of the tacos excellent and had plenty of meat. The flour and corn tortillas were so good, you must try them. We will definitely be back. read more

Holy taco! I live .5 mile from this place and had never been before. I'm pretty sure that's going to change. I knew I was in the right place when I realized that all of the employees spoke spanish, the signs and menu were in Spanish (English available as well). This is an authentic Mexican Taqueria. This is about as authentic as it comes north of the border and you don't have to worry about catching dystentary from the water! The atmosphere is pretty stark - some Mexican tunes play in the background. Two rooms with a basic looking diner setup. I'm a vegetarian, so I tried the migas and cactus tacos, both were excellent. La Fruta Feliz makes some of the best tacos I've had in Austin. The tortillas aren't just made from scratch to order, they're made by someone with serious skills. Just look at the photos of the handsome tortillas - they're thick and perfectly charred in spots. Try not to drool. My favorite is the goat taco, not just because I am a chupacabra, but because it is fantastically tender and subtly flavored with cloves. The carne asada is sublime and the al pastor is top tier. Great food! I ordered beef enchiladas with red sauce and it was awesome. The beans are excellent. Not that canned crap some places use and if the beans are from a can, well then BRAVO but I highly doubt. Too much flavor to be anything less than the real thing. Marianna took my order and she was very nice. She's actually the reason I ordered the enchiladas. And the red sauce over the green. Don't hesitate to ask her for a recommendation if you're stumped. My husband had the beef fajitas and they gave him enough meat to fill his three corn tortillas AND he still had lots of meat left over. Great prices. Great atmosphere. All the Barbacoa tacos were pretty great here. I heard of recommendations for the goat but both the beef and tongue barbacoa tacos were better than the goat in my opinion. Homemade corn tortillas were a plus. The pastor had good flavor but a little dry. All around a pretty good place. I got a watermelon juice that was as good as any other place. Fruta Feliz is a great little unpretentious neighborhood Mexican restaurant, ones of my new favorite brunch spots. The fruta in their name refers to their fresh juices and shakes (liquados). I had a lovely orange-carrot-beet concoction with breakfast. The food is tasty and fresh. I tried the pastor taco and a good ole bean and cheese with avocado. The best taco by far was the goat staring juicy meat cooked in a tangy sauce. You won't find this in many other austin taco joints. The menudo is popular, though I'm not a tripe fan. I hear they also have Poole so I'll be back for that. Service is friendly and bilingual. The kitchen is a bit slow but my coffee cup was kept full so I didn't mind the wait. Good tacos. I had the fajita beef, shredded goat, and a bite of my partner's al pastor. Liked the fajita and al pastor the best. I'm just less of a fan of shredded texture but the goat itself was good and not too gamey. We also had chips and horchata which were so-so to me. Extensive fruit cup and smoothie menu - I'd go back for breakfast sometime to try one. We went on a Friday night and ate in during the karaoke festivities which made it more fun. =) read more
