This place is run by sisters who are incredibly welcoming and warm. I came here on MLK weekend to meet up with some friends for breakfast. Our group of 5 had two couples and a toddler. You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. It came out before my toddler got fussy, which was a plus. We had two of their breakfast entries and they were both very good. The sisters raved about their chicken enchilada and their pozole so they let us try some. They were not lying, they were both delicious! They also told us how everything is homemade and their kitchen is so small that they're only able to hold fresh ingredients to make everything from scratch, and, I believe it because everything tasted so good! read more

Two pleasant sisters from Mexicali acquired Julio's from Estela 2 years ago. They spruced the place up, added some specials of the day (Mondays are mole days) and kept all of Estela's original staff. I've just tried their green chicken pozole and I'm taking some home for dinner. I will be adding some avocado slices and some jalapeño chile to the extras they add themselves: chopped lettuce, radishes, onions, lime juice and tostadas. Yum. As Samuel C pointed out, chicken dishes shine here. We have been coming for (ahem) decades and we always order the same thing: chicken enchiladas in green sauce plates + a cold Shiner bock in an icy mug. Same recipe... same presentation... same reason to come back. Comfort food :) There's a wee bit of free parking in front and a lot more Pay parking in back. Service is good. Food was okay in terms of taste. My fiancé liked the sauce her enchiladas came with and I would say I agreed, it was the best thing from both plates. Portions were not the best. We both felt like it was not a lot of food. Margaritas seemed okay but later on we both felt so bloated and gross. Only thing in common we both had was the margaritas and we both felt sick after. We were visiting the University of Texas and this was close by with good Yelp reviews. The area was Hyde Park, which was very cute. The lady who greeted was so nice! Since we were first time customers, she gave us free chips & salsa, which was delicious. I loved the thick and crispy chips and the salsa was perfect. I used it for my tacos too. I got the chicken taco plate, which I didn't know came with 2 tacos, and beans and rice. They are soft tacos and have lettuce and tomato on top of the marinated chicken and were yummy. My friends and I from out of town came to eat here and from the moment we walked in the service was outstanding. The staff was incredibly attentive and welcoming. I've moved in Austin for over 25 years and can't believe I haven't been to Julio's until today. Food was excellent and the new owner Claudia was the nicest lady!!!!! My friend was craving a rotisserie chicken and let me say it was delicious!!! We split that and still had plenty of leftovers. My other friend decided on the carne guisada plate and I couldn't stop eating his food. Soooooo good! Long time patron of this place. Since the ownership change they changed the chips and decided to try to make them theirselves. The new manager asked me to try them and I told her I thought they were too thick, lacked flavor and were too heavy and didn't fit with the food there. She insisted they were delicious but I feel like that's part of the issue here. The salsa since the switch also gets overpowered by the "new chips" which frequently taste a little overdone. While visiting from out of state, some dear friends suggested we meet at Julio's for lunch. Turns out his grandmother started this restaurant some years ago then his aunt took over, and had recently sold it out of the family. According to them, the new owners have stayed very true to the recipes and flavors of his kin. Julio's is a charming place in a residential neighborhood. The owner was friendly and very engaging. We ordered at the counter and found ourselves a booth in the dining area. The booths and tables are quite small, four people would fit, but it's gonna be cozy. I had Carne Guisadas...tender cubes of beef simmered in a red sauce, served with rice and beans and a side of flour tortillas. All the flavors were great and I left full, but not uncomfortable. Their salsa were delicious, particularly the green avocado salsa, that was rich and creamy and had quite a nice kick! Sadly, it was raining in the day we visited, because they have an extensive patio situation which would be a lovely place to chill on a beautiful day!! I would love to say I'll be back, but I'm now back on the East Coast, dreaming of Julio's Cafe. Cause boy does our Mexi suck around here! lol read more

Our love for Julio's continues grow more and more. We really just have such a soft spot in our hearts for this place and such an appreciation for the folks who took it over. We recently went to the book event at First Light featuring--who else? Julio!--and that whole experience really put into perspective how much this restaurant means to this particular neighborhood. This morning, we met some out-of-town friends for a late breakfast, and we realized that we had never actually been here for breakfast before in 10+ years! It was really good. One of us got the pozole and it was to die for! So good--hominy was the good stuff and the flavors were incredible. Julio's really has a way with soup! Could have used a more hearty plate of toppings but no complaint. The huevos rancheros was also a nice plate, but if we're being honest, not that different from what you can get around town. Our daughter did not drift from her standard fare. Do we wish the coffee tasted like it wasn't burnt? Yes, we do, but nothing can extinguish the flame of love we have burning in our Hyde Park souls for this restaurant. 100% disgusting. I ordered the chicken tacos & my husband ordered the chicken fajitas. They looked & tasted identical......zero difference in the dishes. Our daughter ordered the steak fajitas. Everything was so bland and dry. Nothing had seasoning or marinade. The huevos rancheros were basically inedible. Basically an overeasy egg with a can of tomato sauce dumped on top. Food is good. Ordered the chicken for the second time. Reason for the one star is the owner is usually the cashier and takes your order. She's not very friendly at all. 1st time here we said we liked her decor, she said it was Venezuelan influence. But her food is Tex mex which does not make sense. Then if you look at all the pics on the wall, it's Cuban photos throughout the restaurant. We told her and she said, " you Cuban" not en a friendly manner. My partner said, "yes I am". What we disliked about her is when we told her she has a pic of Fidel Castro and El Che and the pic reads "Long live Fidel and Che". Communist and killer of their own people. Till this day the people of cuba are suffering with no food or clean water, even electricity is cut off for days. This pic is nothing to be proud of and the owner looked at me like we didn't know what we were talking about. Met some friends here on Friday night for dinner and drinks. Julio's is well known for its roasted chicken, but as a non-meat-eater, I opted for the veggie taco plate---a flour tortilla filled with tasty refried beans and cheese, topped with lettuce and tomato; a generous portion of Spanish rice; and grilled squash. So delish! Since it was Friday, I treated myself to a Mexican martini, and I'm glad I did. I was disappointed that there was no attempt to maintain social distancing, not by the staff and certainly not by the many others who arrived and managed to squeeze "just one more chair" into tables that were too near and already too full. Everyone sat outside, but none of the tables were empty or spaced far apart. It is necessary to go inside to order and there, too, no attempt at social distancing as hungry customers crowded into the small space. Being in a "high risk" category, I found the experience unnerving and was unable to fully relax and enjoy the evening. Just a little fyi. Next time, I'll get my order "to go." read more

A jewel of a cafe and an Austin original. I sure as heck hope Julio's stays around for many, many years to come. The owner will greet and serve you every day, as she has for decades. She's so down-right pleasant, kind, and honest, you'd almost wish she'd run for state office--BUT NO! Where then would I go for nourishment--both physical and soulful? Good, well-behaved, reasonable people are known to frequent this place, so please don't ruin it. Here you'll find good, honest food and people--and honest-to-God fantastic authentic margaritas. No sweet and sour mix here, folks! And if all the foregoing ain't enough, you should know that Julio's now, as of fall 2021, accepts payment by credit or debit card. Went there by myself the other day and had their chicken enchiladas. They were pretty good and surprisingly cheap considering they're located in Hyde park which usually has some pretty expensive restaurants around there. Chips and salsa wasn't included for free here like most Mexican restaurants I've been too sadly :/. Anyways the restaurant is pretty cute. The best part about the restaurant's look is the patio. If you like Mexican restaurants with a nice patio with a view of the street you might like this one. Anyways, recommended. Going back sometime soon to try out more of their stuff. read more
