I have been a customer at this bakery for yearsssss. Well I should say my parents really but same difference. Our major "go to" is the pastellios de guava. They are always fresh and always taste delicious. We have ordered cake after cake from here and never been disappointed. The reason for my review now is that I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant and wanted an amazing cake for my shower. Of course I trusted LA Gran Via with the taste since I've always ate their cake (s). However, I was super nervous about putting the customized cake in their hands since it was meant for my shower and I knew a lot of people would see it. I went with my guy though, gave them the idea I wanted and told them I trusted them. Oh man it was the best decision I made. Everyoneeeeeeeee at my shower LOVED how it looked AND how it tasted. I order a cake of tres leche, in which ppl say it's their best, I decided to order it, the price of the cake was $140.00, I'm here thinking good price of how many ppl say it's really good since tres leche cake is a wet cake and spongy, I pick up the cake it looks nice, details were good, as my family cuts the cake, it was the wrong cake, they gave me a regular pound cake, very dry as if the cake was stale, I called the place and the manager all she can do is laugh while I'm explaining it, she wanted me to bring the cake back, how could I brought the cake back when it was cut, she had the nerve to say if I spoke to her nicer then she could have granted me a cake, are you kidding me, she kept on placing me on hold, didn't care about my concerns regarding the cake, I won't ever buy a cake from here, definitely wasn't worth it, and I lost my money for the wrong cake. read more

Worst Tres Leche cake I have ever eaten. They have no clue how to properly make one. Nothing on the top of the cake equals amateur hour and a very small piece to boot.. This is not the "real deal" as another person remarked. I am half Cuban and I know good Cuban pastries as my grandmother used to make authentic ones. I decided to give them another try, boy what a huge mistake that was. I ordered a Dominicain Cake for our son's 16teen Birthday. I should of gotten a hint when I was asked if I wanted to add Tres Leche to moisten the cake. I asked isn't the cake already moist with a short pause I got oh yes. The decor was amazing but once you cut into it to the cake was it was very dry. You needed to dunk a piece of cake into a cup of milk for every bit you took. The next day I made my trip to la gran via, I look around and see the tres leches cakes which looked so pretty. The girls behind the counter were really sweet and helpful in helping me decide which cake should I get. I bought the 19.50 tres leche strawberry cake. I also bought a slice of dulce de leche cake to eat there and it was delicious so I thought man I really scored with this cake must be delicious. When the time came to eat the cake everyone that tried it had a look of disgust on their face. It tasted old, not flavorful. I was so embarrassed and never again will be buying cakes from here. I have no idea how they manage to sell so many cakes these clients must be new like me. Although the cakes and pastries are good when it's fresh as well as their coffee, they are disorganized and rude. Been going here for years and today will be my last. It could be ten costumers or three whatever your getting from here it will be a long wait. In the past they had great people working here but now it's seems that most of the girls barely speak English and when you ask them for something or tell them they got the order wrong in a polite way, they answer you with an attitude and serves the next person. I have visited this place a few times, I have ordered a 5 leches cake, yes 5. I have had their cheesecake, flan, 3 leches cake...their coffee and hot chocolate is good as well, the only thing I didn't enjoy too much was the breakfast they prepare there, I have ordered 2 times and they were not the greatest, but as far as their desserts it is the BEST, you cannot go wrong. La Gran Via has been making my daughters birthday cakes for a few years now, and when I spoke to Betsy she was up for the challenge. I needed a dominican cake with dulce de leche filling and custom made, few hours later I got to the bakery and Magic!! Betsy had created a 3D master piece for my darling daughter (I got lots of brownie points). Don't buy the party packages that this place sales. The food is horrible!!! I tried the food that they sale in the bakery and it was good, and that convince me to buy a party package for my daughter's birthday. The empanadas and the sandwiches tasted very weird, and they were poorly made. The tres leches cake was awful. I still wonder of what kind of meat they made the croquettes, they were really bad. I got sick of food poison for three days after I ate this food. It was a dramatic experience. I don't recommend to nobody to buy the party package from this place. Well this place has disappointed me yet again with their cakes when ordered "fresh", I love their sliced homestyle cake with buttercream frosting whenever they make it and sell it for $2.50 a slice but every time I order a cake from them with the same ingredients as the homestyle cake the cake is nasty! The yellow cake is ok which is why I give it 2 stars but the frosting was not only 2 sweet but had a horrible after taste! It's a shame cause I use to buy from these guys all the time but their cakes, flans and cheesecake have become less tasty! I have been a customer for more than 15 years but lately I haven't been bothering and today after buying a small 8 inch cake for a celebration I doubt ill return! Also staff needs to be more welcoming! They look at you like if you bothering them by walking in the store! Horrible Dominican Cake!! Never buy Dominican Cake here!! I wanted a really great Dominican Cake for my birthday and googled "best Dominican Cake in Bay Ridge" and this place popped up THIRD. My husband went in to buy me a birthday cake and they told him they only had 1 Dominican Cake left but it was large. He bought it anyway even though we just wanted a small cake to satisfy the craving for my birthday and the cake did look beautiful. Excited I was going to finally have what I wanted, we cut into it and started eating, when to our extreme disappointment we realized the cake was hard, stale and very dry. Dominican Cake is moist and delicious and this was NOT it!! We called to complain and they asked "Is it a Dominican Cake?" and told us to bring it back. We did the very next day and the manager had the audacity to tell us it was SUPPOSED to be that way!! I couldn't believe it!! He gave us a piece that was pre sliced and it was the same hard, dry, awfulness. I have had Dominican Cake many many times in my life and this was THE WORST!! They asked if they could give us another and we said NO THANKS!! If that's what your passing off as Dominican Cake, then we DON'T want it. I will NEVER go here again!!
