We walked into this place to try something new from the restaurant we were actually headed to and were super happy with the choice. The food here is really good. The milkshake was the perfect blend of papaya and the tamal had the perfect balance of meat to masa. The breakfast was also super good that I wanted more lol. To start this review off, this restaurant is not Cuban anymore. It's advertised as a typical Cuban restaurant which may be in the past it was but obviously it's not anymore. To confirm my suspicions I asked the gentleman at the counter and he assured me that the restaurant is not Cuban so we could get that out of the way. I ordered the platano soup and the Cuban plate of chicken salad, Cuban Tamal and Cuban ham croquettes. The Tamal was just okay. Nothing to write home about. The croquettes are pretty big but they don't taste like ham. They taste more like a mashed potato mixed with chicken seasoning. Just not great. The Platinum soup was basically tasteless. It had two pieces of tostones in it. It did not taste good, and was nothing like a real Cuban platano soup. All in all, I am on a streak of bad restaurants again, unfortunately. My wife introduced me to this restaurant over 20 years ago and we order take out every-so-often. We really enjoy the Cuban and Bistek sandwiches, empanadas, croquettas, papa rellenos and sweet plaintains - our usual mix when we and friends are craving Cuban food. Wow! This was not only CHEAP but GOOD! Food came out fast, Mango shake was delicious.... and the food AMAZING. My 2 friends also loved their food (it was not their first time there)..... and they had a clean bathroom. The Truth. That's what this place is. In a town known for good Cuban food, this small nondescript place in the middle of a Bergenline block is arguably the best of the best. There's a dining room in the back thats fine if you go with a few friends, but the place to be is the counter in the front room, especially since it has been recently renovated. You'll find yourself overlooking empanadas, papa rellenas, and croquetas. All fried. All starchy. All good. As is everything else on the menu. Standouts are the Ropa Vieja, Churrasco, and the best black beans you're going to find anywhere. This place is really good. I have Cuban friends who swear by it and eat here every chance they have for a taste of home cooking. Eater recently did an article about Cuban food in the area and chose to skip over Gran Via. Horrible! This place used to be great but its no longer the place I grew up going to. The place is still very clean but the food was no longer good. It was not Cuban, for that matter. You know Cuban food is Cuban food and you know when its just all wrong. Omg! The ropa vieja was bitter, the beans were watery (there's no such thing as watery black beans in my world), and the picadillo was pale and stale without sauce. I couldn't understand it.
