As you walk in, you feel like you're at your abuelita's house. The scent of a home cooked meal instantly hits your nose. The space is cute and definitely has that Puerto Rican vibe as you see a lot of references to the island. The staff is nice, the service is quick, and the food is good. Another perk is that there is a parking garage right across the street. This came in clutch as I was already dreading the sometimes busy street parking. I just remember it was pretty oily Chicken empanada - pretty good. I would try some of their other empanadas Chicken noodle soup - I really just wanted some soup since it was cold and rainy. The soup of the day ran out so I settled for this one, which was just a fancier version of Campbell's condensed chicken noodle soup. It was just as salty Pernil sandwich - I really liked this sandwich; probably because of all the fatty chunks of pork. If you don't like fatty pork, this sammie ain't for you Cuban sandwich - pretty solid cubano Pork chunks - this said that it comes in sauce but it didn't. It did come with (some really oily) black beans and some rice that was nice and flavorful (but again, oily). The meat looked dry but it was surprisingly tender Overall, all the food is pretty oily. With so many different Latin American cuisines/restaurants in the area, I'm not sure if I'd come back to this one (especially since it wasn't exactly a quick pick up). read more

I was craving some Puerto Rican food so I stopped in for an early dinner. I sat at the counter and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. I had the pollo guisado (stewed chicken) w white rice and red beans. It was delicious and even came with a few pieces of fried sweet plantain. This is a nice little spot to grab authentic puerto rican and cuban delicacies on a dime. The ladies who tend to your table are friendly, attentive and accommodating. The shrimp mofongo I ordered was actually big enough to share and it was very delicious. The interior wall decor is cute and signifying of the island's vibe. I read few other post here about their food bot being good and how they dont speak english. The food is great so great we spend over $50 a day for breakfast lunch and dinner. They are fresh home made latino food. Not some crap fast food. As far as about them not speaking english. If you are going to complain about that here on yelp, then I suggest you get out of Union City and go else where. The owner of Mi Islita was actually the previous owner of Isla Bonita located in WNY & the WNY location is owned by other management (hence probably why the first review mentioned Isla Bonita and I recommend to not take the first review to heart, that's pretty unprofessional actually) but ended up selling the establishment a couple of years ago. We finally heard that she opened Mi Islita and we are so glad she's back doing what she loves! We ordered the pollo guisado (chicken stew) & pernil with an alcapurria de yuca. Pollo Guisado and Pernil were full of flavor and the red beans were so delicious and SAZÓN! I have no complaints and the staff were attentive and warm!! The establishment is vibrant and very clean! Food smelled amazing and tasted even better. Very moist and flavorful, especially the pernil. I received many compliments over the food. Price was reasonable as well. I'm giving this restaurant 5 stars because the patience, wisdom and dedication were at 120% on a Friday night at 8:30 pm, 30 minutes before closing. Not to mention there were 12 of us. The food here is delicious even 30 min before close. The chefs and waitresses clearly care about this business. It showed last night. Haven't lived in Union City in a long time but after eating here I kind of wish I still did! Went for dinner with some friends and we had a great time - great service, great food - and incredibly reasonably priced...especially for what you get. The croquetas were delicious, as were the filled tostones and the Cuban sandwiches. The Cuban did have mayonnaise on it which would normally cause me to raise a pitchfork like an angry peasant to protest this injustice. But the rest of the sandwich was soooo good that I didn't even notice or care. We enjoyed the food so much that we got some take out goodies a couple of days later - adding empanadas and papa rellenas to the mix. Listen, I don't say this lightly but this is food my abuela would have approved of, and if you have a Cuban abuela you know what kind of ringing endorsement that is. I love this place don't get me wrong. My problem with them is they are not consistent with their food. The first time I was there I ordered a steak sandwich, that came with fries. The fries were fresh and had a slight crust, which we all know are the best fries. The steak had so much flavor and it paired nicely the other ingredients. Point is, it was absolutely delicious. I even gave up Dos Amigos for them. Now I order the same sandwich and there is no American cheese on it. Fine that's nothing. But when I took a bite and started chewing, I immediately had to spit it out. If the cook added any kind of salt to the meat, I missed it. It was disgusting. It was so bad that the mayo lettuce and tomato couldn't save that sandwich. he fries were plain old regular fries. It didn't have the crispy crust it usually does. Consistency is importantly, especially when it's customer based. I don't know if they fired the cook, but they need to beg for his return. I literally had U er deliver me a sandwich that went from the door to the trash. Honestly, that's why I'm skeptical about ordering anything else off the menu. The current cook needs to be fired and tossed out through the back door. Safe to say, I'm not a happy baby and it will be some time before I go back and try it again. Now when that time comes, if it still blows, Dos Amigos will once again become Mis Amigos. read more
