To start off.....the Sul Lung Tang here doesn't taste any where close to how delicious it is at Hanbat Sul Lung Tang in LA. But it is Dallas.....so I settle for what I can get. Definitely the best Sul Lung Tang I've had in the metroplex. I've eaten here 3 times and left satisfied every time but wishing I was in LA for the legit Sul Lung Tang. I also recommend the fried mandu here. It's a giant ball of meatball instead. Very tasty! read more

Had the Brisket Sul Lung Tang for the third time yesterday for lunch (takeout). Broth has a unique flavor you're given salt, scallions and a spice of some sort to add flavors to the soup to your individual tastes, which is great. Be sure to add some rice to the soup. Careful how much you add though because the broth, meat and small portion of clear noodles are a huge portion without the rice. The two kimchis that come with it are wonderful, too. A word of caution though, the kimchi has a strong scent, so you might want to put it in a sealed container if you keep any in your fridge to snack on later. Don't really understand some of the comparisons that I've seen people make related to Korean Sul Lung Tang and Vietnamese Pho. They couldn't be more completely different than another. The beef soup ( Sollong-tang) is the best. Although the server didn't speak much English , but the soup is to die for. Get the Mixed, they have everything inside , Brisket, intestine, flank, tongue, and some noodles. Beside the soup, the side dish, pickle daikon and kimchee is the best too. YUMMILICIOUS! Being away from LA, it's hard for a lot of restaurants to live up to standards but this place is LEGIT. They specialize in solong tang (or what my friend calls white soup). They have other things on the menu like steamed dumplings! For suhlang tang, you get to choose your meat - brisket, flank, intestine, tongue, or mixed. I suggest brisket or flank if you're a first timer unless you like intestine or tongue....I tried the mix one but I think I'll just stick with brisket. You get to add the onions, sea salt and hot pepper paste to your liking. They're very generous on the portions of meat and give you unlimited kimchi and gak-dooki (totally murdered that in spelling). If you're looking for a place to get warm soup on a cold rainy day or if you just feel like getting soup....stop by! read more

Came in on a Saturday morning and it was plenty busy. The place is quaint and small. Since there was only two workers, it took a while for our order to be taken but our food came in less than 10 minutes. The workers are very nice and quick. The seollangtang has a very clean taste, and you can add dadaegi sauce, scallions, and salt for more flavor. There is only two sides, kimchi and radish kimchi. You can also buy the seollangtang broth as well to make at home. Overall, a wonderful place to go for comfort food! read more

3.5 stars rounded to 4. There is a lot to love about this place, the service is stellar and the food is pretty good. However, I prefer Doma Seollangtang, which is really close by so there is no reason for me to come back to LA Hanbat. But, I think that is personal preference so I don't want to dissuade others from trying LA Hanbat out. I read in the Dallas Observer that seollangtang at LA Hanbat takes 2 days to make! You know its the real stuff when it stews forever. This is why I don't make seollangtang at home and will happily shell out money to eat this mostly broth soup. When done right it should be opaque and rich. So, I came for dinner with a Korean friend who could help me determine if this soup was legit. We ordered the mixed meats seollangtang (mixed means everything, tongue, intestine, brisket, etc). We got banchan as well. I wasn't a huge fan of the banchan but these are hit or miss and when it misses, it leaves a huge impression on me. The napa cabbage kimchi and the radish kimchi (kkakdugi) had fermented for way too long so they weren't that good. Normally at Doma I always ask for extra kimchi because it is so good. I do love that they bring out a huge tub of green onions, whereas at Doma it comes in a smaller bowl. Our hot soup came out shortly after our banchan. I thought the broth was pretty opaque and quite rich. I'm not sure if this is the result of the mixed meats but I thought it just smelled a bit... offal? It tasted fine and I didn't get sick or anything but it was a little off putting at first. As for the broth, I thought it was rich and tasty overall. I think it is just slightly richer than the broth at Doma. My Korean friend says he has had better in Korea but you take what you can get here in Dallas, TX. We also ordered those massive dumplings stuffed with meat and noodles. They were so big we couldn't finish them and I didn't like the way they tasted. If they offered smaller portions, like 2 dumplings instead of 6, they might be a good appetizer. Otherwise, I would not order these again. In general, I prefer Doma for the overall taste of the seollangtang and the banchan. Doma I think is just slightly more expensive (like $1-$2 more) and is newer. Both places have excellent service and care about the quality of their broth. I think you will find things to like about both places so give them a try if you haven't. read more

Ah, sul-lung-tang, a great Korean classic stew for whenever you're not feeling well or you just hopped off a plane and need a place to eat (aka this is when I go), then this is a great place to go try in Koreatown. Now, this is in the older Dallas Koreatown near the plaza that has Komart on Royal Ln. It's not exactly bright and shiny new construction, BUT there are definitely some hidden gems in this area. If you go to this restaurant, order their sul-lung-tang; I mean, it's in the name of the restaurant, clearly it's their specialty! Suggestions for sul-lung-tang, add in a little salt and pepper (they usually don't add any so that people can add to their liking/taste). Add in some of the red pepper paste for some spice and scallions for some texture. The soup is simple, but hearty and delicious. Now you get choices of what you want in the sul-lung-tang; I always recommend tendon b/c I love the gelatinous texture of it, but they do have other options as well. The stew comes with noodles inside, but I always just dump some rice in it too to make it like a porridge. Not sure what their hours are like during peak meal times, b/c I usually come at off hours, but I definitely recommend coming to this place if you want a taste of what Koreans go to for comfort meals. read more

If you've read some of my reviews, you know that I travel to the Dallas area frequently for work. A few months ago, I stayed in Dallas for 10 days which included a weekend. So on this weekend, I stayed out with friends on a Saturday night, had tons of fun and got plastered with vodka cocktails and tequila shots. The next Sunday I was a zombie. But after emptying my hotel minibar of Vitamin Water, Gatorade and water... at around 1 pm I had to get up and get some food. Ate pho for late lunch, then slept in my hotel some more. Woke up at 7pm and drove down here to Hanbat to continue my hangover recovery. Thanks to Yelp, I found Hanbat Sul Lung Tang here in Dallas. This is, in fact, the same Hanbat Sul Lung Tang that's in Los Angeles, in Koreatown. So from my hotel in North Dallas in Frisco, I got into my rental car and drove down to the downtown Dallas area for sul lung tang, which as so many people know, is perfect hangover food. Driving was easy. Get to the 35E freeway, take the Royal exit, turn right, and Hanbat is on your right side. It's a tiny mini-mall with like two storefronts and a small parking lot. This is a small, clean place. TVs on the wall showing Korean dramas. They have card sized menus at the table that are written in both Korean and English. The sul lung tang is pretty good, same as what you get in L.A. I got the soutp with brisket. It came out really fast. I added some salt and pepper to taste, dumped a lot of green onions (I love green onions in sul lung tang), and dumped more than half my rice in. So good. They give you two kinds of kimchee, the cabbage, and then also the radish kind cut in cubes. I love the "fresh" kind of kimchee, which is what they serve here. If you're Korean, or familiar with Korean food, definitely come here. I think you'll like it. By the way, it seems like if you're Korean, they're extra nice to you here. That's typical. Funny thing is that I apparently don't look Korean, but this place figured me out. And I got awesome service, and the ladies thought it was so funny that I was hungover. One of my favorite dishes, the Seolleongtang. Most koreans know what this is, but if you don't, just imagine an intensely rich broth made from ox tails, bone marrow, and other cuts of meats like brisket. You season it yourself at tableside with salt and pepper and usually put your rice in it for it to become a hearty meal. I would eat bowls of this stuff when i was a kid, it's that good. LA Hanbat Sul Lung Tang makes one of the best Seolleongtang in the area. Very rich and clean feeling, the broth is great. I usually add some kimchi juice and lots of green onions. The cool thing about this place is that refills are free. By refills, i'm talkin about the broth and rice, not the meat. Each bowl runs around 8-9 dollars so it's pretty affordable for what you can potentially get. LA Hanbat Sul Lung Tang, you cool in my book. read more

Best mul naengmyeon in Dallas! A Korean friend in college recommended this place to me a few years back and I've been coming regularly since. Cold noodles are my favorite Korean dish and I've been trying to find a good, authentic place that made it here in Dallas for a long time. The noodle broth is so icy and refreshing and their noodles are a perfect amount of chewiness. They provide you scissors to cut it and mustard and white vinegar to season it. I like to pour in some of the kimchi broth as well. Their specialty is the seolleongtang (ox bone soup), which is so nice on a cold day. Very nice and delicious broth and you can choose which type of meat (flank, brisket, intestines, tongue, or mixed, etc.) goes in it. Doesn't come with a variety of side dishes which is fine since it aims for a more cozy homestyle setting. Each meal comes with a side of kimchi and radish cubes, both of which are very tasty. SERVICE 4/5- Most people who work here speak Korean as their first language so there is a slight language barrier sometimes and you have to seat yourself and go up to the cashier to pay. ATMOSPHERE 5/5- Very cozy and homey, nothing high end and perfect for the the food they serve. Nothing fancy about this, and the dish they specialize in is very simple/basic -- I mean, really, how hard is it to boil beef? Not saying a place that serves simple food can't get 4 or 5 stars -- they certainly could, if, say, they had great side dishes / ban chan, had a much nicer or cleaner ambiance, had super cheap prices, etc. But they don't. Lately Sullung Tang has been my new crave I knew this place existed but haven't had the chance to give them a try. It's located across from You Chun and near family karaoke. The menu is simple I got the sullung tang with brisket. Try the soup first before you put any salt. One sip of the soup I tasted some MSG, not a surprise cause I know a lot of restaurants use MSG. Once I added some salt and green onions it tasted much better. My good advice is adding the rice into the soup and eating it together. Delicious~! The spicy square radish (kkak doo ge) is an excellent side dish with this soup. I've already explained what sullung tang is and it's benefits, interesting enough I noticed a lot of guys came in to eat. Hmmm.. My overall meal was good nothing to complain about. read more

We don't speak any Korean and the staff here didn't speak a word of English - but don't let that stop you from adventuring out of your food -comfort zone! At noon on a Sunday, we were the only customers besides a family in the corner intently watching the Korean TV channel and enjoying their shared hot pot. However, by 1:00 the place was packed. We ordered a flank solong tang and brisket solong tang and were impressed. The cloudy soup comes out a bit bland but full of potential - add some chili paste, scoop full of green onion, bit-o-salt and some pepper and it's good to go. The banchan is limited, but not in flavor and quality. The Kimchi is homemade and young, but spicy and delicious (they sell to-go containers of this) The Daikon radish was tart and savory (I'm pining for some right now). Casual atmosphere - in a little strip mall on Royal Lane (we had a little trouble finding it as the signage is in Korean, however there is a little sign that says "LA" and something about Korean Beef Soup...so take a careful look at your directions and building address. I like this place. very simple sittings and very simple menu. I always get the same entree, that is 1 order of meat & veggie steamed dumplings and a order of sul lung tang. This place satisfied my appetite whenever I go. Lots of kimchi and scallions to add to my sul lung tang. I sure like eating and whenever I see no limit to what I can add to the table such as huge scoop of scallions and enough dumplings, I go for it. Dumpling can be a bit expensive considering it's only 6 pieces for $10 but it's big enough appetizer to start the night for two. I love it, and I'll be back guys! read more

This was my first time trying Solong Tang. I came here on a chilly night in Dallas and I was the only one in the restaurant. I was greeted in Korean. Although I'm not Korean, I said hi and smiled. I ordered the Brisket Solong Tang. It was great on a cold day. I wasn't sure how to eat it so I put my rice in along with some salt, pepper, and hot sauce. I'm not sure if I would go back as I would probably prefer the tofu soup. But overall, it was a good soup and if I'm craving it I will stop by. read more

Their sulungtang reminds me of home and is so yummy and comforting, and I always get a couple servings to-go throughout the week! This is based on one visit (June 2010) What I've tried: Sullungtang w/ brisket; Hamheung naengmyun Tasting Notes: Sullungtang is supposed to be milky white, but the one time I had it here the broth was more yellow. The server assured me that that was "normal," so I dumped in lots of scallions to distract myself and just dove in (I'm still alive so I figure all is well). The broth was pretty good, but it's not as hearty and thick as I'm used to...and the brisket was not grade A. Still, the sullungtang here will hit the spot. The naengmyun is pretty good too-- but unlike a lot of other Dallas Korean restaurants I've been to, they don't use the black buckwheat (chilk) noodles; instead they use the extra-fine white noodles that you see more in Seoul. But they don't serve yooksoo (the beef broth that traditionally accompanies naengmyun)-- so if you want that go across the street to You Chun. I am tempted to strip this place of one more star because their kimchi was horrendous. If you specialize in Sullungtang, excellent kimchi is a MUST. The kimchi was definitely under-ripe, and tasted like they took cabbage and just swished it around in chili rather than soaking/fermenting in it for a while. The kkakdoogi was decent though, so my friend and I ended up ordering several rounds of that and not touching the kimchi at all. Ambience: On a weekday night it's not too busy. Good for small or large groups. Service: Friendly, but a bit hesitant and shy. Recommendation: This is the only sullungtang I've had in Dallas so I can't compare it to other joints here...but if you've had sullungtang in NYC/NJ, don't expect anywhere close to Gammiok quality (the broth, the meat, or the kimchi). Hanbat is probably the most famous and popular sulungtang place in L.A., so why not just use the same name in Dallas? Koreans aren't very original with restaurant names. The menu is limited, but there is only thing to get here and it's in the name of the restaurant. Sulungtang (soup made from ox bones) is cloudy white with slices of brisket and a little bit of rice noodles on the bottom. I heard it was originally peasant food, but isn't all great comfort food? It comes out bland, so you can add salt, scallions, or red pepper paste . The only banchan is Napa cabbage and radish kimchi (ggakdugi). Kimchi is not my favorite banchan. but is essential since sulung tang doesn't have much kick. The ggakdugi here is pretty good and usually have to ask for more. You can also get flank, intestine parts, tongue, or a mix of any meat, but I usually just get brisket. If none of this sounds appetizing, there is mandoo guk, (dumpling soup) which uses the same broth and is pretty good as well. Sulung tang is great for a cold winter's day or the day after a long night. Too bad this place closes early because if it was open as late as Dal Dong Nae, I would be a more frequent customer. read more

One of my favorite places to eat home style Korean food! I come here quite frequently with my bf and we loveeee their soup. People might ask, "why is this place so popular" well my answer is "go read the article about this place!" The soup is basically just broth base made of beef and when they bring it to your table, you garnish it with green onions, salt, and the red sauce. I personally just need some green onions and eat it plainly with kimchi. Their kimchi is really good and the radish kimchi is even better! What makes this soup? No MSG and clean broth! Stopped by here on a rainy, cold day. My boyfriend got the house special, sul lung tang, while I got the galbi tang (beef short rib soup). I was feeling a bit under the weather (cough hungover) and needed some good soup in my life. Sul lung tang was on point and well priced. Galbi tang was HUGE and very good! The lady who took our order was also really nice, she brought over a pair of scissors without me asking because she was worried that I would skip out on the beef because the pieces were so big, with the comment "the meat is so good you need to eat it!" I have a healthy appetite and the galbi tang portion would have been good enough for 2 meals. I didn't even eat most of my rice, I focused on the soup! Only 3 side dishes come out, but again, bowls of it (when other places usually give small dishes). I like how they give you a huge tub of green onion for the soups. Will return! read more

Thanks to Joseph B. for his great review and made me want to try it out. When we were looking for this place, we could not tell the restaurant since the name was in Korean, other than the two letter "LA". But no worry, the restaurant was clean and service was very friendly and attentive. Menu is limited and is waiting on the table held by typical beer/wine menu stand. We went ahead ordered So-Long-Tang (Ox bone soup), Mandu (dumpling) and Bul-Go-Gi soup (from wall menu). We could tell that everything is made fresh from scratch. Their So-Long-Tang is really really fantastic and perfect for those cold and rainy days when we are looking for a soup fix. After later reading more about this dish, I appreciated all the work that the preparer did so that I could enjoy it. Their dumpling is generous, fresh, and tasty. My kids could not have enough of the Bul-Go-Gi soup. It was boldly flavored and went very well with everything else. When I came, they served only 2 kinds of side vegetables: Napa cabage and radish. The food must be good if a place specializes in making that particular thing. Sul lung tang is one of those things that takes a lot of resources and time to make delicious, especially with the amount of stewing that must be done to infuse the soup with all the essence of the beef bones. The soup that they gave us was so savory and flavorful that I didn't really add much else besides a bit of scallion to give it some green. And they were very generous with the amount of beef that came inside the soup as well. This is definitely a great go-to comfort food if you're looking for something a bit heavy but also healthy. read more

Amazing service. We are both not big fans of beef but we'd stopped at almost EVERY restaurant looking for something to eat and this said it had spicy cold noodles Korean style, so we went in. I had the beef sullong tang with ribeye and flank cuts. The broth is very flavorful--rich and beefy. When I went at lunch it was moderately busy, but the wait staff was quick.
