Hot chocolate cupcakes (Friday)
Rita W.

Wow, can't believe I haven't reviewed La Luna Cupcakes before! I've been going here since I started my job in FiDi back in 2018, and am so glad that they are still around. They specialize in their tres leches cupcakes - both regular / vanilla and chocolate variations. They also have "popular" flavors such as plain vanilla, chocolate, birthday cake/funfetti, and so much more. I love checking out their seasonal or special flavors and would get those for my team so we can try different cupcake flavors. Usually our faves are the tres leche ones as they are not too sweet. They are really good most of the time and has a nice level or moisture as well. We can eat multiple in one sitting as the light cream frosting layer doesn't feel as heavy and sugar concentrated as traditional frosting. Only downside is sometimes the tres leche ones may be a bit dry and other times a bit overly moist to a level where the liquid just drips, but it's most super delicious. Cute interior and friendly staff/owners. They also sell decor for cupcakes and candles as well.

La Luna Cupcakes is located on the first floor of the Crocker Galleria. Upon entrance, there are a few seats inside, a display case full of cupcakes, and decorations. It looks pretty welcoming despite the desolate location. Each cupcake is $4.50 and $4.75 for a gluten free cupcake. We got Passion Fruit, Duo Chocolate & Vanilla, Red Velvet, Cookies & Cream, Neapolitan, and Happy Birthday cupcake. The taste and texture of the cupcakes were average. Nothing stood out as the best cupcake, but the presentation of the cupcakes were nice.

Went to this cute little place in downtown San Francisco after having a large meal. Offerings were very interesting and tempting but had no way to eat more. So got just once chocolate tres leches cupcake and it was soooo good. Service was quick too. Will definitely visit again to try the different flavors of cup cakes.

I stumbled upon this place in search of some gluten free options for my coworker's birthday. I ordered a half dozen cupcakes and the cashier was super sweet and let me swap out one flavor because I wanted to try the ube cupcake after I saw it on display. The shop looks super cute and the decorations are adorable. They don't just sell cupcakes they sell cake pops too! The cupcake was super soft and moist and the frosting was delicious and not too sweet. We definitely have to come back to try the other flavors.

The cupcakes are amazing. Each cupcake has a filling that goes very well with the flavor. The cupcakes are not to sweet. Tres leches was my favorite along with passion fruit. Each cupcake was fresh and moist. The service was ok. He was friendly and helpful even though he charged my friend and I for two bags each when we only received one. The ambiance was very quiet and beautiful.

Went for the Tres Leches because of the good reviews on yelp Walked 25 minutes here and the cupcakes were SUPER DRY !! Especially for a Tres Leches , Almost like a plain Vanilla cake with a whipped cream topping Service was definitely great. Cashier immediately said let me go and find out when I mentioned the problem He came back with a replacement and said maybe they had forgotten to inject that specific cupcake with the different milks The replacement was much better , excellent service Nice ambiance and super clean place

I treat myself to a weekly treat (usually on Wednesdays for a mid-week pick up), and I tend to opt for another dessert place but I wanted to try something else. These cupcakes remind me of the homemade cupcakes you make at home - they get the job done, it's nostalgic and it's cute. First, let's start with the "mall". It is dead, unfortunately because I am sure this place was once upon a time busy, because it is a great location. The packaging is simple yet perfect. I like that it actually holds the cupcakes in place because then the transportation is easier as well. I really liked the tres leches cupcake and if I need a pick me up, I'm happy to know this place is here.

Came here to pick-up some cupcakes for a work event and it was so quick and convenient on the way. It's also located right near the Embarcadero BART station and on the California St cable car line--it seems like they used to be (or have another location) nearby in the FiDi north of Market. They're known for their Tres Leches cupcake, but have so many fun, unique, creative flavors, as well as some seasonal ones sometimes! I ordered 4 cupcakes: pumpkin, Ube/taro, tres leches, and cookies and Asteroid Cookies & Cream Cupcake. They were a hit! The interior is bright and airy with lots of windows. There is some seating inside with tables and bar seating at the windows--perfect for people-watching as many people walk by! Service was kind, friendly, fun, helpful, and knowledgeable, recommending what's popular and what they liked. Will be back for more!

We came here in early June and ordered 6 cupcakes. We were not impressed with the cupcakes, which we found to be sort of dry and bland. The cupcakes did not taste like the flavors advertised, and so we were just a bit disappointed with the cupcakes in general.

love all the creative flavors and combination!! neeed to go back and try more. cupcake I had was not too sweet (which was great as a personal preference) and nice little pick me up

One of my friends ordered a bunch of cupcakes and cake pops from La Luna to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had an assortment of flavors, including tres leches, chocolate tres leches, mocha bailey, vanilla, red velvet, and confetti/funfetti. I ended up having one of the tres leches cupcakes. I liked it a lot, the main body of the cupcake definitely did taste like tres leches, and the frosting was creamy and rich. Great for dairy lovers. The cake pops were also decent. I do wish it was a little more apparent which flavor was which and that they were labeled (just in case there was any variation in the flavors/ingredients and if anyone has allergies/dietary restrictions) since they came with an assortment of different designs, some of which had the small circular sprinkles coating the outside. If you have a sweet tooth and prefer a smaller portion size than a cake slice, the cake pops are a fun option. If you're carrying the cake pops around, be careful that they don't get banged up since the outside shell does get a bit crushed if it hits something.

These were quite possibly the best cupcakes I've ever had! Amazing flavor, moist texture and not overly sweet. 100/10

Can you walk in an order/buy a cupcake or is it online/advance order only?

Walk in purchases are possible. Certain flavors sell out, so I suggest placing an order if one wants a particular flavor.

I'm always hunting for spots like this because I have a weakness for those over-the-top, Instagram-worthy desserts that look like diabetes in a dish. Like most places in this genre, A Buttercup is small, modern, and minimalist with limited seating. If you plan to go, aim for off-hours unless you enjoy waiting in line for sugar. The decor is cute and trendy, perfect for photos if that's part of your dessert ritual. As they say, "you eat with your eyes first," and when it comes to presentation, this place definitely gets an A+. The desserts look stunning and set high expectations. Unfortunately, that's where things started to crumble. It's like going to see your favorite artist live. You've watched the videos, memorized the songs, and paid for the experience. But instead of the electric performance you imagined, you get someone lip-syncing and barely connecting with the crowd. That was this place in dessert form. We ordered the Mango Bingsoo on our first visit, and when it arrived, we were surprised by how small the portion was. The guy next to us even looked over and said, "Whatever that is, I'm getting that next time." He shouldn't have. The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.

The line went pretty fast on a Wednesday evening, but I can't imagine what it's like on a weekend. There's a bit of seating inside to enjoy your ice cream. They let you try three flavors, and I tried two, and both were so good I just decided on the spot. My first sample was the Salty Kaya. WOW. Heaven in my mouth. A burst of coconut and the saltiness that paired so well together. There's a reason this flavor has a permanent spot on the menu and isn't just a seasonal flavor! My second choice was the Funky Miso. I guess I love the sweet and savory combo. Also delicious! But not quite the flavor explosion in my mouth like the Salty Kaya. This one really grew on me after several spoonfuls of it. I really like that the single scoop allows you to get two flavors. How can I decide on just one when they have so many fun flavors?? I love this spot and will absolutely be returning. My favorite is when they have their melon flavors, and I was so excited to see cantaloupe back this week! It was just as good as I remembered... fresh, creamy, fruity, and not overly sweet. Their flavors are creative without feeling gimmicky, and everything I've tried has been yummy. They let you sample up to 3 flavors, which definitely helps when you're trying to decide between all the seasonal options. There's usually a pretty long line but it moves fast so I've never felt like I was waiting too long. The staff is always friendly, and the whole experience is worth it. If you're into unique, seasonal flavors, Garden Creamery is definitely a place you'll want to keep coming back to.
