    Egg tart 2/27/26

Stopped by after my mom's appointment around 5:15 p.m. and wasn't sure if they were still open. It looked like they might be closing since two people were waiting outside. Turns out they were still selling egg tarts, just in a very unique way! The owner slightly opened the door to take orders, then closed it and reopened it to collect payment and hand out the pastries. It honestly felt like a secret egg tart pickup. Lol!!! Egg tarts are $3.75 each and definitely high quality. They're thick (about 1 1/2 inches deep), heavy, and super fresh. Ours came straight out of the oven, hot, sweet, rich, and custardy with a crisp, airy crust. The filling is smooth like egg pudding. A bit sweet for me personally, but my mom absolutely loved them. :)

Excellent egg tarts that always have a pretty long line (~20-30m). The establishment is cash only, so make sure you bring some. This egg tart is one of my favorite traditional Cantonese egg tarts. I think what makes this egg tart special is the crust; normally, Cantonese egg tarts have a very thin crust that isn't flavorful and doesn't complement the rest of the tart well. But this egg tart has a thicker crust that has a nice flavor, texture, and crunch that really makes the rest of the egg tart explode with flavor. Keep in mind that it is NOT a Portuguese egg tart (which has a distinctive caramelized top). They also only sell one type of egg tart, so be prepared to buy multiple if you're waiting in line. 4.9/5

TLDR: it's worth the wait! This Chinese bakery is famous for their dan tats, an egg custard tart. It has a generous custard in a flaky crust and made my car smell wonderful on the drive home. Since the pandemic, it's open only when the owners want to open so if you walk by a long line of people standing outside of closed door on Grant Ave, find all the cash in your pocket and get in line, which is a bit slow which is fine b/c everyone cheerfully anticipates their order.

Long wait, but next level egg tarts. Went for a snack after lunch - there was a bit of a line ... about a 30 minute worth of a line. You don't order in the store, once you get to the door, one of the ladies opens the door and asks what you want and they bring it to you - sneaking a peak inside, you can see why. It's super small and narrow of an area - impressive that all the magic happens there. Ordered two egg tarts - was pretty expensive, but saw they were pretty big when she handed us the bag. It was piping hot - a good sign! Handed over the cash and got back to the hotel to eat. Took a bite and woah it blew my mind - it's not like your normal Chinese egg tart ... was definitely more custard-y and moist. The pastry bit was also not too dense. Super good - would def recommend!

Second time trying golden gate bakery and I still think it's the best egg tarts I've had in the Bay Area! Don't be fooled by the looks of the crust from the top. The bottom part is super flaky and thin! The egg tarts are definitely on the pricier side ($3.75 each), and they are not always open! I had to wait in line for around 30 minutes but I think it was worth!

Always the best! My family would always stop by here to get boxes of egg tarts when I was a kid so I come nack whenever I'm in SF. It's a gamble of whether they'll be open but if they are it's the perfect snack eaten as soon as you get them, warm and fresh. Crispy, flaky crust and the perfect amount of sweetness. Try to get there right before 12PM when they open.

On February 4th, 2026, around 4 p.m., I spotted a police officer standing in front of a sketchy storefront. The gates were mostly closed and the windows were boarded up, with only part of the door exposed. As I approached, the officer seemed confused and dumbfounded. A woman walked out and pointed to the menu, stating that the price of a mooncake was $14. "That's expensive; I only ordered three items," the officer said as he paid for the items already in the bag. He walked back to his squad and tells them how pricey it was, and they all seemed intrigued. One officer even walked up to me and asked what a mooncake was and if it was actually that good. I told him they are very dense, rich, and heavy--definitely not for everyone. I added that you don't come here for the mooncakes; you come for the egg tarts! Although the egg tarts are also pretty pricey at $3.75 a piece, I have to say they're the best in San Francisco. However, the shop is often closed. When they do decide to open, a ridiculously long line immediately forms out the door. I miss the days when they had regular business hours, which is why whenever I see a chance to grab some, I go for it.

If you are not into the egg tarts from Golden Gate Bakery, me too!! Had their egg tarts occasionally over the years and was never too impressed. Haven't had them for many years, but kept hearing people raving about them as THE BEST. Being an egg tarts fanatic, I have to try them again. Tasting notes: Custard: - sweeter than most - no egg flavor (judging by flavor and color, not much egg in there) - overcooked (as evident in the popped bubble holes) Crust: - delicate and crispy, not the fluffy flakiness that I crave - very low crust to custard ratio (maybe a plus for some) Do I like them? No. However, for those who prefer sweeter and high custard to crust ratio, this might be your only option.

THEY WERE OPEN! This bakery has been the go-to stop for egg tarts my whole life! Of course, the hours are always inconsistent, but it makes each bite of egg tart all the more worth it. This visit was around 4:30pm on a Saturday. They always come out warm, fresh, and creamy with a flaky crust. You'll wait in line and exchange cash for the bakery at the door. It's quick and casual!

Egg tart: buttery, flaky crust with not too sweet egg custard filling. Prices have gone up throughout the years, but this place can't be beat. $3.75 for 1 tart now. Exterior brings the appearance it might be closed, but you'll see the line outside or light coming from inside when the door is open. Their business hours can be unpredictable and they can be open in the afternoon until sold out. Memories of childhood with the pink box of pastries. The store isn't open for browsing anymore which is disappointing. Egg tarts and moon cakes are the main items. Friendly lady opens the door and asks what you would like.

Happened to see it about to open surprisingly. It's been years! We got in line around 11:45 and were about the 5th party in line. They opened at noon, but must have been still baking because we waited until about 12:30. $3.75/ea initially seems high but very worthwhile once you feel the weight of it, the flaky crust, the luscious custard. Chinese parents approved! We got a dozen. They're VERY good but the logistics (completely unpredictable hours, even when they open they're not actually ready, with no updates) is still unnecessarily challenging.

This place always seems to be closed when were in chinatown, but not this time. Finally got a chance to try the famous egg tart. The door opens and you order from the lady, hand over cash and handed a white bag of pastries, very drug-deal-esque. Overall, egg tart was good. Nice and warm, decent amount of custard, light taste. Is it the best egg tart/ dan tat I've had? I'm not sure, but it was pretty good.

Finally was around while they were open. We waited maybe 10 ish minutes to order. Very much an iykyk type place as it isn't well marked and there's no store front. There is just a door that someone takes orders from and closes to get your order and then opens again to give the order. They were sold out of everything except the egg custard tarts, which was fine because that's the main item we wanted. They came out warm. Very fresh. Light eggy custard with a butter flaky pastry shell. A nice little snacky if in Chinatown.

How to know when they are open? Driving an hour or so for this bakery and realizing they are closed is such a bummer.

Actually we never know when they will open until we see the lines in front of the door! But hopefully they will open on weekends at 11am (I heard that from their neighbors)

What else is good here besides the egg tarts? Thanks!

No, they have only egg tarts and coconut tarts

    Are they closed for good?

No, they still open sometimes mostly on weekends.

Google says they're permanently closed - is that true?

It is not true because they don't open the exact open hours. Meaning that it is based staff available and time frame. They would open during the moon festival and then they're closed for two or three months after that. Even when they open, there are… Read more

    Are they open today?

I walked by GGB yesterday afternoon 10/30/21 at about 230pm and the storefront was all boarded up. A peek inside showed no signs of any future openings?? Does anyone have any future insight?

Is this place open at all? Will it open in the near future?

They opened for three days per week prior to the Moon cake festival (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) but there is no set time when they will reopen for normal business. They only sold moon cakes during that time, none of the regular pastries.

Does anyone know what moon cake flavors you can preorder? Trying to avoid making the staff angry by asking for the list when I call 😅

White lotus, mixed nut, almond, coconut, black bean, pineapple

Is this place open yet? I need some moon cake!?

It's open just for moon cakes. And preorder only.

Can they pre order egg tarts?

June 21, 21 is bakery open?

No, I drove by today (06/22) @ 10:25AM and it still have boarded windows.

Do they still open? Do they have a phone number to call regarding their hours?

They were still boarded up as of May 1, 2021.

Does anyone know if they're still in business? Saw that Google says permanently closed.

Anyone know if they are currently open? July 27 2020

Walked by twice at different times on 8/6/2020 and it was boarded up. I did see their infamous "3 week vacation" sign on the door.

    Is still open now?

Boy, this is the million dollar question for Golden Gate Bakery. I fly out 2x/year to SF and they're always on vacation. During this virus, I'd imagine they'd be closed.

I'm flying into San Francisco tomorrow for a few hours. Are they open or on vacation? Every time I'm in San Francisco, they're closed!

I've always wanted to try this place since I see a line every time I walked by. There's a lot of foot and car traffic. It's definitely a busy area so expect to park in one of the nearby residential areas or be extremely and walk/bike/bus here! Upon stepping into the tiny shop, I was enveloped in the sweet smell of chocolate chip cookies. It was tempting to put that in my bag, but I stuck with my game plan. They do self serve for all the baked goods and drinks except the pizza and focaccia. You tell the cashier what you grabbed. There's self serve complimentary water on the side too. Got a pecan swirl, one of each square focaccia flavors, and a half pizza (hot). The pizza flavor of the day was triple mushroom with sesame ginger garlic vinaigrette and mozzarella. It was 10/10 delicious!! Do note that they don't heat up the focaccia. Personally, after tasting everything, I'd say the pizza is more worth it than the focaccia "pizzas". The pecan roll was quite addicting too. You can also skip the line if you want to order online on their website and schedule a pick up time, but my gift card didn't work so I just waited in line.
