EGGPLANT DANISH (5/5) One of the must unique pastries I've ever had. I would say this is a must try for this month, especially if you like Middle Eastern flavors. The eggplant was super tender and very easy to bite through. But what I appreciated the most was the layers of complexity with this danish -- zhug below the marinated eggplant, and not only whipped goat cheese and harissa on top, but also sprinkled pomegranate seeds on top for added acidity and brightness. 2. APPLE VANILLA BEAN CRUFFIN (5/5) Apple pie in a crispy croissant muffin! Fresh apple pie filling is extremely generous, and most importantly, the vanilla bean diplomat cream on top was actually a nice balance to the sweetness of the apple compote. A great fall pastry for this month. 3. CORN PROSCIUTTO CROISSANT (5/5) A super familiar and comforting flavor. The corn and basil bechamel sauce was addictive and abundant. But that is simply personal preference, and the flavor was still phenomenal. 5. TAHINI COFFEE PAIN AU CHOCOLAT (4.5/5) Great pain au chocolat. Full of both tahini and chocolate filling, though didn't get as much of the coffee flavor. Extremely flakey pastry. I've had other tahini chocolate croissants so this isn't the most unique flavor combination, but this was one of my favorite renditions of this combo. 6. RICE ROLL SPECIAL BUN (4.5/5) A divisive one! Butter & Crumble is exception for the quality of its crispy, flakey pastry, and this item has very little of that. It's extremely soft and possibly soggy, but not in an unpleasant way at all. On the last weekend of the Summer stroll I landed on Francisco street. You will see a line and once inside you will find lots of bake goods. I ordered the classic croissant and it was flakey like some in SF. It was buttery and tasty. I also got the Corn Proscuitto Croissant and was corny like some on social media feed. I then got the Rice Roll Special Bun which was my favorite and it was savory with lots flavor. I washed it all down with Apple Pie Matcha for Don Juan De La Matcha. In my judgement Butter and Crumble is one of the best bakery in the city. It's mooncake season, and the big day is 9/25/26! Yes, there's almost always a line, but don't let that discourage you--the staff definitely knows how to keep things interesting. You may get yelled at, screamed at, or told to "F off" if you decide not to buy. Somehow, it makes the wait even more intense and memorable! Tip for mooncake lovers: CALL and order a day or two in advance. But be prepared--you may still receive the same warm welcome: nasty customer service! Thankfully, the mooncakes make up for it! Their freshly made bánh trung thu are incredibly delicious! It's a bun with a crunchy topping on the top and so it looks like a pineapple. The top coating tastes very similar to butter shortbread cookies from the Hawaiian's Honolulu Cookie company. The bread is super soft inside and warm, and when they put a slice of butter inside, it melts into the bread. It's also kinda chewy inside like a mochi consistency. I recommend the original custard pineapple bun. The salted egg yolk pineapple bun was also good but I think it should have had a little more filling. If you're craving savory pastries, the bbq pork pineapple bun is also good. The croissant egg tarts are fantastic. The custard tastes like a Portuguese egg tart but the crust is super crunchy and flakey. There's a caramelized sugar coating around the crust which makes it extra crispy. Highly recommend! Next time I'd probably order online and come for pickup. There's two lines and they're both pretty long: ordering and pick up. Btw they take only cash if you order in person.
