The BEST coffee shop in Capitola. You're crazy if you think any other spot makes better coffee. Bagels and baked goods are also terrific. A little more expensive than some other pizza and bagel shops in the area but it's better. So if you don't want to spend the extra $2 for a bagel then just don't go here and then complain on Yelp. All the staff were super nice to my kids as well. Not a huge spot to work out of all day but a very pleasant atmosphere. read more

We ordered the caraway dill sourdough bagel with herb cream cheese, and I have to give credit where credit is due--it was amazingly delicious. At $6.50, totally fair for Capitola. My mom got the blackberry scone for $5.50 and declared it phenomenal. So far, so good. Everyone's happy. Then I decided I needed to try their gluten-free bagel, made by Original Sunshine, which is known for making some seriously good gluten-free bagels. I went back up, ordered one plain gluten-free bagel. No spread. She said it would cost the same as with cream cheese. I said fine. The cashier walked behind the counter, opened a plastic bag full of bagels, grabbed one, placed it into a little brown pastry bag, and handed it to me nice and cold. Then came the grand finale: $8.74. ( I don't know how that came out to that price?) For. One. Bagel. No cream cheese. No toaster involvement. No ceremonial blessing that I witnessed. My friend, we have officially entered the artisanal bagel tax bracket. That felt a little like highway robbery--except apparently the highway runs directly through Capitola. And here's the most annoying part... THE BAGEL WAS DELICIOUS. ‍ I went home that evening and toasted it. So yes, I got robbed. But I walked away happy, eating the evidence. However, I did notice some things that concerned me when it came to food safety and employee hygiene. Since this location also prepares and serves food, I expected a higher level of cleanliness and food-handling practices. I noticed employees working with food and drinks without their hair secured, no hair nets, and no gloves while handling ingredients. The employee making my coffee had acrylic nails, and some appeared to be coming off, while she was sprinkling toppings into my drink without gloves. I also noticed an employee wearing very short shorts while working in an area where food and drinks were being prepared. While that alone is not my main concern, combined with the other things I observed, it made me question whether proper food-handling and hygiene standards were being followed. I really liked the shop and the coffee, and I hope management takes this feedback as an opportunity to review food safety practices. With a little more attention to those details, this could be an even better place. read more

Best bagel sandwiches in town if you are willing to spend. I get the lox sandwich which is perfect proportioned with each ingredient. Great place to stop on the way down to capitola beach. There is a few small tables inside for seating and a bench outside. There is a coffee stand that serves drinks inside as well. I haven't tried the pizza but the bagels are super yummy. We've enjoyed the bagels and pizza here for a while now. Most recently, we ordered bagels to pick up on a Sunday morning. Our bagels were warm and fresh, ready for us in a to-go bag. The cafe had a warm, positive energy. You can get craft coffee at their coffee cart or fancy yogurt from their fridge. The employees are friendly and helpful. We had the bagels at the beach in Capitola and enjoyed every bite. The bagels are toasted perfectly. We love the cream cheese, which is lighter and fluffier than other cream cheeses we've had. Excellent little cafe with bagel sandwiches and coffee tucked away from the main downtown Capitola strip. They have Syllable Coffee on sight with coffee and espresso drinks- I thought my cappuccino was excellent, and definitely on par with all the other great coffee in this are (Cat & Cloud, Verve , 11th hour etc). My husband enjoyed his drip as well, but does prefer Cat & Cloud for his coffee. So let me just preface this with I am not a bagel person. I'm one of those people that avoids carbs unless it's truly worth it, and this was worth it! The bagels here are not only super fresh, but they are just different. I'd describe the interior like a denser foccacia bread, but the exterior is thick and crisp. We got one cinnamon raisin with cream cheese, and also a breakfast bagel with everything bagel. Both were amazing. The breakfast bagel comes with a frittata egg, and thin layer of avocado. they serve pizza for lunch as well, and I'd bet the dough is amazing if the bagels were that amazing. What a quaint little cafe. I'd been meaning to stop in and finally did on a Sunday morning. To my surprise, they offered gluten-free bagels, and I ordered a breakfast sandwich with one. The sweet woman at the register said they also offer gluten-free pizza, too! I'll look forward to trying that one day. When we walked in I told my wife, "What a cute little place." The lady from the couple who came in a few minutes after us said exactly the same thing, "What a cute little place." We had caraway, everything and plain bagels - 2 with smoked salmon - and these were no ordinary bagels-by-the-dozen from a big chain bakery. These bagels were charmingly misshapen, each unique and made-with-love presumably in a small-batch artisanal kitchen by people who care, and I'm guessing they may have been house-made on the premises (speculation on my part - at least they tasted like they were). So good. The cream cheese was fabulous too - definitely multiple steps up from a Philadelphia tub. My wife also enjoyed her matcha drink. I love this spot! Absolutely amazing pizza, bagels and drinks. I have been a couple times and had both the Scandi bagel and a slice of the sausage pizza. Both are so good! I also tried an iced blackberry matcha which was a delightful treat! We're big fans of Jayne Dough and are so glad to see this brick and mortar spot open after enjoying many of their pop ups. Jayne Dough, the owner and creator of her cult favorite Detroit Sourdough pizza, is hands down the freshest pizza I have ever had. She originally did pop-ups all over Sant Cruz where she would sell her pizza by the slice or whole pie, but now has the cutest little cafe right in the Capitola Village. She is a perfectionist by nature and you can taste it in every bite. In her new cafe she now makes sourdough bagels, salads and even signature coffee drinks. I can't recommend this place enough. There is never an "off day" with La Marea and you are guaranteed to fantasize about her pizza until your next fix! read more

This place was great! For a coffee and bagel stop, they do open a bit late (9am) but their fresh made sourdough bagels are to die for. Hot and fresh and super tasty cream cheese (plain or herbed). They also have pizza for lunch and some pastries. The young lady who took our order seemed a bit out of it but she made a good bagel nonetheless. Has seating but no restroom (not one that they will share anyway) hmmm isn't that required city of Capitola? I can imagine the pizza when fresh is better but $9 times 6 slices = $54 or maybe it's 4 slices so $36? Someone (the chef owner) is buying their dream ingredients and charging a pretty penny and charging $9. Bookies pizza is best in the area - period. I loooove this place and go once a week for the farmers market bagel and a cortado ! My only pregnancy craving ever is a bagel with cream cheese and their super high quality sourdough bagels made with love are the best!!! They are kind and welcoming even when it's really busy, I hope they become so successful they can expand to a bigger space soon with more seating and a bathroom because this is the kind of business I am more than happy to hand over my money to due to the quality of the ingredients and the kindness of the people who run it.
