Wait time was super long with barely anyone else in the restaurant. Staff were pretty inattentive too. We were probably waiting around for 15 minutes to order. As for the vibe, it's cozy and nice. But I don't think they have AC so they had a massive fan blowing air. They also gave us a bunch of styrofoam plates that were getting blown everywhere from the fan. Luckily, it wasn't a super hot day, otherwise it would've been a lot more uncomfortable in there. After discovering late night food in Viejo San Juan is basically non existent, we were thrilled to not only find a place serving food after 9 PM but also serving lots of vegan options too. I consider myself something of a pizza connoisseur, but also when you're starving, most standards go out the window. My cousin (the vegan) opted for the Vegan Crostini (Brocoli Bread, Chickpeas Vegan Cheese, Pickled Vegetables, Micro Green) instead of a pizza and the single bite she let me steal was delicious. I opted for the Cheesiness Pizza (La Masa Dough, Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese, Parmigiano Cheese, Smoked Gouda Cheese, Pecorino Cheese, Goat Cheese, Gorgonzola Cheese) which was absolutely delightful. We went last year and loved that had vegan/ vegetarian options. Decided to come back and the worst experience I've ever had on a restaurant. They took our order, brought out half of the order and then after 10 to 15 minutes said they had no more food. Half of our party had to leave without eating and couldn't share our pizza because had meat and they don't eat meat. When asked about what happened if they had no food or they just decided to close the kitchen they got defensive. Never coming back and don't recommend. Pretty decent spot for late(ish) night pizza. Fortunately for us, La Masa probably was one of the few places whose kitchen was still open around 9:30/10 pm. *Keep in mind, many places had to close early because of COVID restrictions.* We ordered a large pepperoni and a small veggie pizza, mac n cheese, and the tartare. While I loved the pepperoni pizza, I wasn't a fan of the veggie because of the sauce. However, other folks at my table really liked the veggie pizza so maybe my taste buds were off that evening. That said, everything else was pretty awesome. La Masa has an OK patio area; however, the kitchen is right there so it can get kind of warm in the back especially when the place is pumping out pizzas. While our waitress was really nice and funny, the service was just meh. Our waitress had apologized on a couple of occasions for forgetting about us. I think this had to do with us being on the back patio. You know, the whole out of sight; out of mind thing. On the way out of the restaurant, we saw a whole bunch of people (the bars would have been closing at that time) trying to order or waiting for food. I guess that our waitress was a bit overwhelmed with the folks inside of the restaurant and they received top priority. All in all, La Masa Pizzeria is a great place to pick up some late-night bites, and I would definitely return if/when I'm in Old San Juan. read more

The pizza at La Masa is excellent. This place is located in Old San Juan so finding a parking spot requires some luck. You could find a nearby parking garage or take an Uber if your short on luck. Not much here for decor. The seating is indoor open air. The service and staff were professional and friendly. The pricing was about expected for what we ordered. We started with a Blueberry Mojito. It was made with fresh blueberries and it was delicious. We ordered the Pumpkin Basil and the Carbonara pizzas. They were both fantastic. The pumpkin basil pizza was very flavorful and reminiscent of classic pizza flavors. The carbonara pizza was savory with a softer, chewier texture from the portobello mushrooms. It was almost like I was eating chicken carbonara. The first time we came here they were closed. We've been wanting to try again and I am very glad we did. La Masa has excellent pizza. They use a variety of different doughs and sauces along with fresh herbs and ingredients. If you're in Old San Juan looking for pizza, go to La Masa. It's delicious. A very huge letdown, the concept so much better sounding than the actual execution. I would advise passing. We ordered personal-size pizzas to try them tapas style and unfortunately, the dough for all the pizzas were extremely lacking in freshness and depth. Really seemed dough was prebaked for their kitchen to save time. After over 30 minutes of waiting in a fairly empty dining room, it was shocking to receive barely warm-to-the-touch pizzas, and yet the edges were overcooked like cardboard. The worst offender was the traditional Pizza Margherita which was burnt black to the core. And my Hummus Pizza which I was so looking forward to also had burnt edges, the sesame style flatbread trying to be innovative, but nose-dived because when you burn sesame it's over, you only taste charcoal. The hummus was so little and not noteworthy, the mini baby tomatoes and olives could have been a nice touch but could not save the heart of this pizza. Now, the worst part of it all is that one of our family members cannot eat meat and we ordered the Pizza pumpkin basil which came to the table with meat. For a restaurant focused on menu items for vegans or veggie folks, this is a real slap in the face. Everyone was done with their pizzas and we had to wait for another twenty minutes for a Pizza pumpkin basil which honestly was cooked with a thinner dough for it to be completed in time. The pumpkin looked like Gerber baby food and just did not pop or taste like anything, the roasted garlic seemed to be the only thing saving that pizza. At the end of the meal, we expressed our support for local Puerto Rican restaurants to the server, but we felt we needed to let them know this meal failed in many ways-- the long wait, barely warm burnt pizza crust, and putting meat on a vegan pizza is honestly disrespecting those folks who you are trying to reach. Before we left, I turned to the right and there was a South Asian family also eating pizza, and stacked next to them were burnt crusts. I have lived in NYC and Philadelphia, so I know the traditional pies, as well as the adventurous ones, and what was going to be a highlight of the trip, really was such a letdown with La Masa. This crew needs to do their homework and go back to the basics, providing customer service with attention to detail and acknowledging failures. read more

My family and I stumbled upon this restaurant a few nights ago when we were looking for dinner that would satisfy vegetarian eaters. This restaurant did not disappoint! The staff were quick to get us seated and were extremely friendly from the start. Service was slow but the wait was worth it (we were also a fairly large party of 10). Drinks were very tasty and they had some unique options on their cocktail menu. They stated that their mojitos are their specialty but honestly, you can't go wrong with any drink here! For food, we ordered 2 orders of the gnocchi (both the red pepper sauce and the pesto sauce) and both were very tasty! Fair warning, the red pepper sauce did contain hazelnut for those with allergies but my goodness, it was absolutely delicious. We got the vegan crostini which were by far one of the most incredible appetizers I've ever had. I highly highly recommend trying these out! We also ordered the hummus pizza, veggie pizza, eggplant lasagna, and tortellini. All of these items were very good! Everything is made from scratch and tasted very fresh! As it was my brother in law's 30th birthday, our waiter was so sweet and gave us a complementary round of Prosecco shots and a vegan blueberry cheesecake dessert! Completely unnecessary but so kind hearted to do and something we will all remember! All in all, I'm extremely glad that we stumbled upon this place! The wait can be long, especially for a large party, but the food and drinks were all very very good! My sister and mom split a Steak and cheese with jalapeño dough (sweet peppers on the side) and I got the gluten free personal steak and cheese with no sweet peppers I've never tasted such perfection! First of all food was great... but service and waiting time was terrible. We waited 1 hr for our food... nothing to much on while we waited on the table. Yes they have appetizers but we had 3 small children with us, crying and screaming how hungry there where and nothing was simple for them to eat, no deserts either. Ordered this from Uber eats one night I was craving pizza. Both the pizza and cake has interesting flavors. The pizza had a spice-y flavor to it even though it didn't contain any spicy ingredients. The flavor profile has too much going on. Pesto, pistachio, sun dried tomatoes, prosciutto, and ham all go well together but for some reason it didn't flow well with this pizza. However, it was an extremely light pie. The banana cake had a nice surprise. Turmeric and apples. It was actually very very good.
