We got two items and portion size was really good for both of these. 1. Vegan Puerto Rico Mofongo- homemade plant base "ground" in criollo sauce with onions and green. 2. Criollo Tofu- organic tofu filets slowly cooked in criollo sauce served with native rice and tostones. Our waitress Joan did a really good job. I was going to order burger along with Mofongo but she suggested to go with Criollo Tofu and it blended really well with Mofongo. I really like the tomato based gravy of both items. We also got a regular latte and it was good. Please note that they do add 18% tip automatically. For us, it was $85 (tip included) for above these two items. I was so excited to come here because they have vegan/gluten free options. I can't speak on all of the dishes but the vegan/gf breakfast bowl was not good. Everything was underseasoned except for the potatoes. The tofu was bland and the spinach was wilted and not even cooked into the dish, just sadly sitting on the side with two lone cherry tomatoes. The food options are good. The service js extremely slow. We had to wait 90minutes to get our food. While is true that service is slower in Puerto Rico in general but three other families were seated after us and got their food felt that they had deprioritized our order or atleast felt that way. This 5 star review is mostly because of our server, Daniel who was perhaps a highlight of our entire trip to Puerto Rico! We ended up here because my sister was looking for vegan options in Old San Juan before we headed back to the hotel for the evening. Cafe Berlin was open, nearby and had quite a few options on the menu for my sister to pick from. When we arrived, we were the only diners and were quickly greeted and seated. This is when Daniel really stole the show for us. Not only was he excellent in the level of hospitality that was extended, he was also professional and knowledgeable not only about the menu offerings, but we learned so much about the island from him. He was such a personable, pure soul that the interaction we had over the course of our meal was so genuine and memorable. As for the food, my sister ordered a tofu dish that was flavorful and generous in portion. She really enjoyed it and the bites I had were pretty good as well. If it were just for food, I would probably still give this place a solid 4 stars - but we gotta shout out the gem of a human that is Daniel! Their model is ripping off tourists. Any review that is from before it was another owner and a very different menu and quality. They charged us almost four hundred dollars for breakfast for a group of ten without alcohol. They sold supposedly natural orange juice for $7.50 per glass. Then, we confronted the owner and she brought a gallon out to show us to confirm that it was natural and when we read that is high fructose, corn syrup, we respectfully tried to reason with her and. She literally says just get out if you don't like it. And the bartender was aggressive almost to a point that we were a little concerned for our safety. The toasts were not toasted. The avocado toast was very thin and soggy, but it was twenty dollars, the pancakes were meh. They charged six dollars for a side of bacon. This was the best meal we had in Puerto Rico! Past the hustle and bustle of the tourist trap restaurants, we saw this gem sitting chicly at the top of a plaza. The exterior is sophisticated and quietly welcoming compared to the over the top party restaurants blaring loud music at the south side of the plaza. Our waiter introduced himself and explained that everything on the menu is freshly made in house, so everything takes a bit longer than normal restaurants. We ordered a round of fresh made juices and coffees to start. Every drink was fantastic and each person at the table had a minimum of 3 drinks by the end of the meal. This is not standard, they were honestly that good. We ordered the appetizers or hummus and ceviche. For mains we ordered the pescado al coco (my absolute favorite), eggplant parmigiana, mofongo de pollo, and the boricua fest. We also got a series of desserts and more coffees. I do not normally like Puerto Rican food. I find it greasy and unhealthy. If all Puerto Rican food was this good, it would be my favorite food. read more

When you are traveling the first thing that you want to do upon getting off any plane is finding something to eat. Stumbling upon Café Berlin, it was most exquisite on the outside. When you walk inside, it was very clean and it had several employees on staff. They also have seating outside for you to enjoy that beautiful sunshine in Puerto Rico. When placing your order you couldn't help but notice that there were only a few tables seated. It honestly took about 30 to 45 minutes to receive your food when you place your order which is a very lengthy time to receive your food. It seemed like the waitress was a little bit nervous to come and check on us due to the food taking too long. There were also other customers that were waiting a while for their food as also. When the food finally arrived I definitely had some concerns. The salmon was dry, and the chicken for the monfongo was tough. The tostones looked like they were two days old refried several times. The best thing on my plate was the rice and beans. This was definitely a disappointment being so hungry with this being my first stop. When the waitress stopped by at the end of us eating, she asked us if we liked the food, we said no. She stated why didn't we say anything and we knew that we would have to wait at least another hour if they had to re-cook anything. All of a sudden, I saw someone walk out of Cafe Berlin, a place I had not noticed before. After peeking through the glass, I saw there were open tables and people seemingly having a relaxing time. There are way more brunch places in Old San Juan that'll truly give you a worthwhile. St Germain, Mimosa, and El Punto just a few. This is probably the worst spot I've been to in PR. Any 4-5 star reviews of this place are suspect at best. The order (a literal sandwich) took 40 minutes to table on a SLOW day -around 3-4 tables worth of people. And the quality was far below the listed price. It's as if they were rationing cheap ingredients, and made a half-a$$ed effort to get it on a plate. The server, while not in control of the cook's mediocrity, didn't really try to rush the order or better the situation. He rather decided to lounge around the bar laughing and gossiping with the rest of the servers. A $5 sandwich with a $1 juice ended up being $35. They're lucky I tipped (not like I had much of a choice given the waiter gave me a clover machine with a minimum 18% tip and gawked down at me expectantly).
