Vianca made me a fan for life. We arrived really late after our flight and were scrambling to find somewhere to eat. St. Germain Bistro Bar happened to be right across from our Airbnb, and honestly it felt like we got lucky. Even though it was late, they seated us right away and helped us pull together two small tables so our family could sit comfortably. My kids were starving, so that alone was a huge relief. The portions for the kids' pasta and chicken nuggets were a little smaller than expected, but the flavor and quality were excellent. You could tell the food was made with care. I ordered the onion soup and the fried cheese with guava dip and wow. Absolutely delicious. The guava dip especially was incredible. I also had a mojito that was perfectly made. But what really made the night unforgettable was the kindness of the staff. My son had forgotten his inhaler and was having a hard time adjusting to the humidity. He was coughing a lot and clearly uncomfortable. Vianca noticed right away and went out of her way to help. She brought over honey and encouraged him to take a little shot with ginger and honey, then brought hot tea as well. She even suggested things like putting socks on him and using Vicks when we got back. When I mentioned that my kids are half Puerto Rican and their abuela already swears by those remedies, she just lit up and said, "Well you're home then, you already know what to do." That moment really stuck with me. The warmth, the care for kids, the genuine hospitality. It's exactly the kind of Puerto Rican kindness people talk about. The kitchen is small, so service can be a little slower, but it's absolutely worth the wait. The food is great, the drinks are great, and the people make the place special. If you're nearby, definitely stop in. Places like this are why people fall in love with Puerto Rico. read more

Does NOT honor reservations. We reserved a table, and then watched another group of young men step into the store and sit down at the table we had been promised. The hostess refused to kick them out. I overheard the group behind us who had made a reservation also be denied. After finally being seated, it took over an hour to get our food. The poulet was very good, but the bread we ordered was smeared with a red sauce where it been cut with an obviously dirty knife. At the end of the night, they gave us a free piece of cake on the house, which is the only reason why this review isn't one star. Also, our waitress was really nice and friendly, which raised the mood of the evening considerably. Other than that, though, I'm afraid I can't recommend this restaurant. read more

The service was quick and friendly. Casual dining after walking several miles. We stopped here tired after a morning at the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. We ordered 5 dishes for breakfast. Our favorites were the lemon ricotta bacon and the sweet bacon. The fresh squeezed lemonade was so delish. The potatoes that accompanied the eggs were flavorful and had an herb mix. We happened across this restaurant because it was close to where we stayed and we were looking for breakfast. The food was edible but nothing special. The breakfast potatoes were undercooked. I requested crispy bacon. One piece was crispy and the other was so floppy I gave it away. We had to ask twice for our drinks and even then it took a long time and the server gave them to the wrong people. The server could not answer questions about the menu and kept having to run back to ask his boss. They were out of avocado but no one mentioned that until after our order had been in for 10-15 minutes. I'd say they were busy but the seating area is small and there were only 2 other tables seated. This is the only place I've eaten in Old San Juan that I would not go back. read more

There are not very many vegan/vegetarian options in Old San Juan - and it's even harder to find a restaurant that will also appease meat eaters but St. Germain offers it all! It's a lovely little restaurant in Old San Juan that offers a wide array of dishes for carnivores and herbivores alike - and they're respectful of dietary preferences in switching out cookware/ not frying things in beef tallow. My in laws and husband were unsure of the menu at first, but our wonderful server Nashalie recommended the fried cheese and dried eggplant appetizers - and everyone was sold! By the end of the meal we were sated - stuffed even - and planning our next visit here already! The prices are reasonable and won't break the bank; the food is quite delicious and cooked fresh on the premises. They were kid friendly too- with pita pizza and chicken+ fries options (always a winner with the kiddos). I was particularly pleased with my stuffed pepper! All in all, a delightful dining experience - and a must stop for any vegan/vegetarian visiting San Juan. read more

This spot was recommended to us in old San Juan. Started here for a cocktail and apps. Let me tell you the deliciousness of this. The spot is small and cutesie on the inside. The service was good. But let's talk about the food. Three apps: fried cheese, fried plantains with chicken, and tomato salad. Oh goodness were all of these so darn tasty. And our drinks were also delish. They took a bit to come out but worth the wait. I had the rum cucumber that they have as a specialty cocktail of theirs and it was well balanced and so refreshing. This was our breakfast spot the last day of our trip and it did not disappoint. Besides them taking longer than usual to bring out our food, everything was amazing. The service was great. The food was great. The ambiance was great. One friend got the lemon ricotta pancakes...sooo yummy and fluffy! What a funky little corner. On one side is a place where people are lined up waiting to get in, and then you have this place. What an amazing little place. But I'm gonna share some things as I'm not sure who is running things, because when I brought up an issue with the bathroom with one of the two dudes up front, it was met with indifference. So my issues: - no tp or towels in the bathroom. There's only one bathroom for men and women so it can be an issue. - never received napkins or silverware. - the English menu on iPhone has a glitch so you can't see the entree section so use the Spanish version. My mahi wrap with papas fritas were excellent. The fries are probably the best I've had in old San Juan. My wife had this lentil vegan dish/dip that was so flavorful. Picture fail on that dish but trust me, it was that good that I felt it was worthy of a pic before I licked the bowl clean (kidding! I used my fries and fingers, again no utensils). I had a gin Rickey that was excellent. They have an extensive listing of drinks written out beautifully on this huge board. I think the chef may also be the owner as he was also popping out between rushes to help out. Honestly, those small little hiccups were nothing and maybe it was a new employee as they did have that deer in the headlights look as only 2 people were working the bar and seating area. Came here as we were staying right up the street visiting family. First off, the waitress was rude. I was ordering to go and she was inpatient. She seemed bothered and said it would take long but I just let her know I didn't mind as I was staying nearby and would come back. I got back and the waiter asked what I needed, I notified him I was waiting for my order and he was rubbing his eyes and nose then opened one of our food trays. He let me know it would be a few minutes and I didn't mind, he was actually nice, and he said I could sit anywhere as I waited. The waitress is the one who brought me the order and practically tossed the food bag at me and I said thank you, she rolled her eyes and walked away. Horrible service!!! The food was also not worth the $60 for two items. Small portions and just overall lack of flavor. I knew I should've went with a Puerto Rican restaurant. read more

After touring downtown San Juan we decided to look for a place to eat. We stopped here for lunch due to seeing the great reviews. The chef made some drink recommendations which my husband had. One of the drinks was a specialty with guava and cucumber (can't remember the name of it) super refreshing. He also had a local beer that was recommended. We both had the pork burger with egg I had mine with fries he had tostones with his and a dip she made. The dip I enjoyed as well. We had to wait about 1.5 hrs for hour food which is why this is 4 stars and not 5, because the food was truly delicious and outstanding. Quantity was good, but not that much given how long we had to wait. A true standout was their onion soup -- incredibly flavour and very fresh. We also tried their two-way toast, their romesco sandwich (except they were out of romesco so we had to replace it with hummus) soup of the day, which was pumpkin for us, and their sauteed potato hash which was buttery and delicious. Went with the eggplant marinara because it was my first real meal of the day. It was hearty and filling and what my body needed. Pro tip: cut the eggplant and mix in its garlicky goodness with the sauce. It's fried well so it'll keep its crunch and shape. It made me crave for a flat plate instead of the bowl the spaghetti came in. Managed not to splash too much tomato sauce. Happy hour from 3 to 7pm, $5 dollar drinks and discounts on the breaded eggplant and yucca montadito (which can be made vegan). Ask for Alex; he makes a mean margarita. read more

However, the service was terrible - waiter didn't tell us that they ran out of pasta for the kids and so the kids had to wait an additional 10 minutes for chicken tenders after already waiting forever for our order. Seems like the place is woefully understaffed with the bartender playing waiter with new staff who aren't trained. Took 2 hours to get in / out for something that should've taken maybe 45 mins to an hour at most. Good ambiance with the Christmas decorations. read more

St. Germain Cafe is a must try when in San Juan! My friends and I went back twice because of how impressed we were. The vanilla cappuccino with whipped cream was one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. The coffee was rich and balanced well with the sweetness of the whipped cream. I also tried the smoked salmon everything bagel and it was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was very helpful and gave us great recommendations. We ate here twice for brunch and enjoyed the innovative toast served two ways--savory and sweet--on the same plate. The traditional breakfast my husband ordered, eggs over easy with hashbrowns and toast, was the best he'd had. We asked the server whether there was a restaurant on the second floor, as we'd seen people eating on balconies when we walked by the evening before. It turns out the couple sitting next to us responded that they owned both the Bistro St Germaine and The Mezzanine, a cocktail and tapas bar on the second floor. We went to the Mezzanine the same night and ate on one of the small one-table balconies. The fish tacos we ordered were delicious as were the chicken skewers. The owners had recommended the black bean hummus, which we thought was just okay. My husband had a beer, but I had a cocktail. We especially appreciated that the owners also recommended several restaurants to us that they go to themselves (including Princessa Cultura, where we had outstanding ceviche the next day). Came here while on a trip to PR to visit my husband's family (all of whom are safe after hurricane Fiona, thank God). We came to San Juan two days prior but could not do much walking because of the older people in the group. My son had flown down the day after after us so we decided to go back and take him and our nephew along so immerse ourselves in the culture. I love walking around Old San Juan. The struggle, perseverance and history is everywhere. We basically just parked our car and went walking. After traversing the hills and historical landmarks, we were quite famished. We were looking for a place that had lunch food, like sandwiches, coffee and tea. Someplace that would be able to accommodate 3 adults, a teen and a toddler. I loved the look of St. Germaine. It's a quaint bistro that you could most definitely find on a sidewalk in France. It was bustling but we were able to grab a table. We had some baguette sandwiches, drinks and a couple of desserts before heading back to the car for the ride back to Dorado. The service was great, our server attentive. I miss the island, now more than ever. We've only had wonderful memories during our visits. I wish the people of Puerto Rico a swift and painless recovery. Strength and love for all. read more

We stumbled in here by accident during happy hour. Five dollar mojitos? Yes please. Delicious and full size. I wanted more for sure. I indulged in a fresh salad which was loaded with intesting ingredients, from avocado to pickled onions. M daughter feasted on a sizeable burger and tostones on the side. I've been to Old San Juan hundreds of times and didn't know of this place. It's not a hole in the wall, nor is it new. I just never came across it. Thankfully, the food tour I was on made this the first stop. I really liked it. We were treated to a cup of coffee and a ham and fried cheese mallorca sandwich. The sandwich was delicious. I would get that again. This restaurant has a lot of history to it. Back in the day, it was a popular hangout spot for Nationalist Party members, including their leader Pedro Albizu Campos. Our guide told us that on October 30, 1950 (if I recall correctly), agents raided the place to arrest him. Shots were fired; somebody died; he was arrested. The owners never covered the bullet holes on the walls (there are two above the cocktail menu board) to preserve that piece of history. Interesting stuff. I'm a local and never knew of this. It's nice to learn something new, especially when enjoying something delicious. The restaurant is vegetarian and vegan friendly. They offer brunch on the weekends. I think i'll be adding this to my PR Good Eats collection. If you are in Old San Juan, I suggest checking this place out. read more
