But on a laid-back, early weekday afternoon, all bets were off. Recently opened Doña Pula has been hot on IG- so since my mom isn't too far from Castle Hill, off we came to see what the hype was all about. If my memory serves me right I think(?) this is where Marisco Centro used to be- but that's neither here nor there. You can tell the thought that went into hooking up this restaurant. So many of the Dominican details took me back home. The wooden tables are painted with the Dominican flag and there's even a wood-fire cooking prop that looks just like what a lot of Dominican folks have. That particular setup took me back to when my aunt cooked outside. Another prop was an old-fashioned wooden candy vendor's box that vendors would carry using a belt attached to the box that fits around the back of the neck and rests near the upper back as the person would carry it similar to the see old-school "cigarette girls"boxes. These little touches brought back so many memories. My mom ordered the mondongo (tripe) and loved it. I had the broiled fish fillets which were well seasoned and the tostones were fresh and delicious. There's nothing worse than old tostones that have been fried, refried, fried some more and then passed off as "fresh." Even my passion fruit juice tasted fresh! Let's get to what a couple of folks are complaining about: yes, the tip is automatically included- even if you're only a party of two. Luckily in our experience, food and the service matched the tip. Otherwise, I definitely would NOT have been a happy camper. By the way- our server, Basilio, was on top of his game! Between the Dominican details, fresh and tasty food and Basilio's attentive service, we had a nice experience.
