I had been wanting to come here for a while. This is the only place where i noticed they had Torta de mole. And I love Mole! Opportunity came and my partner and I swung by. I'm so glad they had the option of a torta sampler. This is the best when you are not sure of what to get. Obviously, my fave was the mole (for the sweet and salty) and my partners was the machaca. Not only did we fell in love with their flavors but their GUAVA CAKE is bombacious! All i can think of is their Guava cake and how i want some now with a cup of coffee. This cafe has become one of my favorite spots! Their bakery items are of great quality. Their cakes are among my favorite as they are not overly sweet. I've had various items of their coffee menu and have not been disappointed. Both hot and cold versions of their drinks are great. The aroma of fresh pan dulce is rather inviting and who can resist a piece of bread and coffee after a morning hike in nearby Trumbull Canyon. We've been here at different hours of the day and they always have fresh bread available. The cafe de la Olla is definitely the reason I stop here. It's is quite delicious and perfectly made. The place is bright and clean with plenty of tables to enjoy your coffee and sweets. They have other food options that I have not tried as we always make a beeline for the pan dulce. It is a little on the pricey side though as I can get the price cheaper at a panaderia but I still pay it a visit. Bad experience! Horrible customer service from Yuri. I placed an order for a cake two days prior only for them to give me one off the shelf. The strawberries were wilted and gross and of course they don't do refunds on my down payment. No I don't want anything else from this bakery. No I don't want to wait while this rude person boxes and writes on my ("fresh") cake that was supposed to be ready. I was really disappointed with Monarca. I followed the hype to La Monarca, and it's real. Finding La Monarca is not hard at all as it is directly off of Greenleaf in the Uptown Whittier neighborhood. There are a lot of cool little shops around the area that makes stopping by a breeze. There is plenty of seating area inside, but you can also easily get your drinks and food and just walk around Greenleaf. When you enter you notice that there are some glass displays were all the pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) is located and ready for your pickin'. They do not have a large selection of different breads like most panaderias (Mexican bread stores), but they have the basics like conchitas, cuernos and orejas. Next to the displays is the coffee bar, the cake displays and the cashier. Everything looked pretty good, and all the drinks sounded good too. I went with a Cafe de la Olla cold brew. How can you not like Cafe de la Olla especially when it is in cold brew form. I feel like cold brew is the best way to have coffee. Also I decided on some of the small Mexican cookies which will run you a whole $0.50 a piece. Pick some of these up while you are there, they are quick bites that are totally worth their low low prices. I had one of each of the four flavors: Mexican Wedding cookie, agave, cinnamon sugar and a plain flavored cookie. Two bites and they are gone, but they are mighty delicious. Overall I was pretty happy with my visit and they have fan in me. I tried a small piece of a conchita and can confirm that they are not hard and indeed a nice soft and spongy texture which is always great in Mexican bread! read more

This is a more upscale Mexican bakery with self serve options as well as a nice selection of bakery items and drinks. Service was nice and I liked their Mexican hot chocolate as well as some of the desserts. 3.5 stars. I may change my rating upon future visits. So far we came here on a weekend for a breakfast before we headed out on an outing. They don't have many breakfast offerings, but they do have outstanding coffee and some good little quiches (and of course their pastry/pan dulce options). We tried the quiche rajas and the quiche chorizo - both were very tasty, but small. I also had their cafe guaymas which is a latte with chocolate and coconut (heavier on the coconut than the chocolate). The oatmeal and the yogurt parfait were very good. Service was spotty. The first cashier that took our order you could tell was in a grumpy mood - which doesn't really mesh when as a customer it is early and you are excited to start the day. She also forgot a few of our items, so when the hubs went to pick one of them up she asked if we had gotten so-and-so-item and he told her "no". So we waited for it and when it never came we went back to ask and she flat out told him that he had told her that we had already gotten it, which was not true. Her co-worker basically rolled his eyes behind her back and retrieved our item with a smile. Awkward. Ambience is light and fresh and there is plenty of space to gather and enjoy your food and drink. I am excited to try more of the bakery items and overall the standouts were the delicious coffee drinks. SLIGHT UPDATE: Went again and tried the cafe San Cristobal and it was super, super yummy. I will get that one again for sure. I'm torn on this review because there are some great things about La Monarca and some things that just upset me. So here goes. The place is quite nice and there is plenty of street parking at this location. Some of their offerings are quite good. My family has enjoyed the guava pastries and the conchas. I have enjoyed the horchata cake on one occasion but not so much on the second. So here goes my first but of constructive criticism. The first time that I ordered the horchata it was delicious, nice and moist and just enough cinnamon flavor to get that horchata feeling. Second time it was dry, needed way more leches and has wait too much cinnamon that it overpowered the taste of the cake. Secondly, for the third straight time that I had been there and at another location, they didn't have the horchata latte because their order of milk hadn't arrived, subsequently found out that they just won't be making it for the time being but I wouldn't get a straight answer so I kept coming back in hopes of trying it. It was the main reason why I came in the first place. The inconvenience of not being able to get an honest answer is what irks me. Anyways, there is enough good in this place that I will probably come back but I'd hope that they get their act together and improve on their stuff. Criticism can be good. Last thing, tres leches cakes are supposed to drenched in the milk mixtures, come on guys don't be serving a dry cake like that! read more

Accompanied by cafe de olla, mexican chocolate and desserts (ham cheese and chipotle croissant, capirotada, strawberry cheesecake & cupcake). Everything was pretty fresh and tasty. It's a little pricey for pan dulce but I guess we're paying for the brand. The staff was polite and friendly. Every time I order something it's either they don't have it or they'll just have you wait in the line with nobody reassuring you that they'll be right with you. Neither of them were particularly amazing, and my cafe guaymas was served without whip cream and chocolate drizzle unlike the picture of it on here (also turned to complete crushed ice after drinking half of it like Starbucks frappucinos tend to do...) What I WOULD like to commend them for though is the atmosphere! The store is exceptionally clean, the pastries are presented neatly, and the decore is very impressive when you walk in. Based on the cashier's recommendation, we also ordered the latte de carmen and a slice of the guava cake. The bf liked the latte, although wished it was a little more hot. Horchata Cake and Flan PLEASE try these, they will Lee you coming. Try the Hibiscus Mango Tea, especially on a super hot day when you feel like you're melting, this tea will revive you. I Love absolutely love the color and style of the building, Orange is known to represent happiness and I love how clean and open it is.
