Lucky for us, one of our very good chef friends (used to work for Jean George!) has recently moved to Cancun and has been eager to share in some good restaurants with us. He suggested we check out this place as it was nearby and we had some time to kill. He specifically recommended we get the Escamoles, so that's what we came ready to eat.
We were surprised that they didn't open til 1pm, so we waited about 15 minutes, and then were the first people inside. No worries, as if the service in Cancun wasn't good enough, we were now treated like kings!
We decided to eat inside as it was extra hot outside, and loved the attention to detail on the decorations here. Really nice. Even convinced my husband to go with my kitchen back splash plans after seeing something similar here!
Of course, the Escamoles weren't available, so we were forced to study the menu and find other options. The grasshoppers were also out of stock :( but they did some through with the worms which were delicious and reminded me of those snap pea "chips" that are all the healthy rage right now.
We warned the server that we wanted to try a bunch of appetizers, but I wish they had stopped me. I think we tried 6 things, and these all came out to feed a family of 6, it was WAY too much food, that was ridiculously cheap. Highlights of the meal were definitely the bone marrow and the octopus in guacamole. One negative was the esquites street corn, way too wet and didn't seem right.
The drink menu for specialty cocktails seemed to be limited to the 6 or so choices on the table top menu. We tried about 4 of these and thought they were all decent! read more
