In my almost 60 years of life of living in California, La Palapa is by far the best tasting Mexican restaurant out there! The flavors are authentic, and yet unique at the same time. If you are a fan of chili rellenos, you don't know what you've been missing until you order one here! Prices are higher than average but portions are huge and we usually get two meals out of them. They're a "mom and pop" restaurant, and service can take awhile when they're really busy. But as far as we're concerned, it's worth the wait. First of the service was great, only one server when i came for dinner and was on it! So sweet and very attentive. Sangria was bomb and the service size was big just how i lile them. Food was so warm and comforting and delicious. I got the 2 item combo with a ground beef enchilada and chicken tamale with green sauce. Both 10/10. This restaurant is tucked in between units that make up the Bayside Inn. We stopped in for a light dinner and enjoyed Chicken Posole, LoadedNachos, and a wine margarita. All were very good and reasonably priced. Bayside Inn offers guests breakfasts at La Palapa with a short menu of breskfast choices. We tried the Chilliquilles, the Chili Verde Omlette, and the Bacon and Eggs with Pancakes. Each dish is prepared to order, and were excellent....definitly not your standard "hotel included" breakfast. Keep in mind, the restsurant appears to only be open for breakfast for Bayside Inn guests. read more

The picture of beans lured me to this place. It has been a while, a long while since I had such a delicious authentic Mexican food. The salsa and chips open us to a promise of more yummy food. The salsa was spicy but just enough amount... then our food came. The chips were warm.... Kids ordered a special burritos which was a big as a pillow. I split an enchilada plate with my beautiful wife. The beans! The beans! They were extra creamy. The youngest had the taquitos and enjoyed them. Overall, the food and service were excellent! Excellent service right off the bat. There was one server who was holding it down, taking orders, getting drinks, refilling without asking, etc. We were a large party of 8, and she was always one step ahead of the game, making it look easy, even when we asked for extra salsa, napkins, etc. and did it all with a smile. I believe her name is Lizbet? Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh and full of authentic flavor. They ought to be famous for their homemade tortillas because they were perfect. We stayed at Baywood Inn this past Memorial wkend. Sunday breakfast was provided by La Palapa. Upon entering La Palapa immediately greeted and she informed us she will be with us in a minute. Quick note restaurant was only opened for breakfast for Baywood customers so 1 employee for restaurant to host and clear tables. Food is buffet style on this day. Customer service was exceptional and food was DELICIOUS. Food was hot and fresh. When they are open to public they make homemade tortillas. Unfortunately not able to take pictures because I had only had 1 arm. Recovering from shoulder surgery. Highly recommend this establishment. You will not be disappointed. read more

We stayed at the Baywood Inn and breakfast at La Palapa is included. The choices aren't many but omg the food is delicious! I'm not sure why the reviews are mixed but the service was always great and with a smile while the restaurant ambiance felt homy and inviting. The breakfast burrito is gigantic! It's a very cute and vibrant place, lots of natural light with a view of the water. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door, and enjoyed a table by the window. Server was very friendly and attentive. There was a steady stream of people coming in and she managed the whole floor herself. She brought the chips and salsa... oh. My. Gosh! Chips were still warm and the salsa rocked! I ordered the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail and it was THE BIGGEST and THE BEST I've ever had! IMPORTANT NOTE: This place is expensive!! $32 for chicken fajitas with a $3 split-plate fee and we didn't even get individual salads (most places give each person sharing the plate their own soup/salad when there's a split-plate fee involved). Service was fast and friendly and the place is clean (didn't use the bathroom, so I can't testify to bathroom cleanliness), and the fajitas were very good as was the blue cheese on our salad, but they're getting four stars instead of five for their prices (another example- $19 for a chicken quesadilla). We're local and have always eaten at the equally (in a different way) other delicious and WAY less expensive Mexican restaurant in town and can honestly say that La Palapa's tourist prices are what will drive us away when choosing between the two. read more

We were pleasantly surprised by this unassuming little place in Los Osos. The quality and taste of everything we ordered blew us away. Our table ordered the fish tacos, they were fresh and the green sauce they serve with it was delish! So flavorful and fresh tasting. The tortillas are house made and amazing. We also got the Chile relleno, and it was served piping hot with lots of fresh goey cheese oozing out when you cut into it. When Morro Bay suffered a power outage right before we checked into our hotel, we escaped to Los Osos for dinner and found this seafood Mexican restaurant. I was definitely not in the mood for Mexican and a little salty for having to give in. But seeing that it's seafood, I salad yes to this place. Can I just say that I was thankful for that blackout so that we can venture out to Los Osos? First of all, service was attentive and our server was so nice. We were so hungry that we devoured the freshly fried corn chips (thin, crunchy, and hot!) and hot salsa. It was complimentary, and we asked for a refill without issues. So good! I ordered the enchiladas de camarones that came with refried beans and Spanish rice. They put extra shrimp on top of my 2 enchiladas. That is really unheard of in the Bay Area where I'm from. No one gives you extra protein. Our plates were ginormous! I had leftovers that I enjoyed the next morning at another blackout in Morro Bay at our hotel. The sauce was smoky with chipotle which I can tell it was freshly made. And speaking of fresh, handmade corn tortillas! Shut the door good! Even though it was smothered with sauce, I can taste how fresh it is. I will travel far for freshly made corn tortillas. Took me back to Mexico! And I got a glass of sangria, and it was so a big portion! Filled up a big red wine glass. They don't skimp here, and their recipes are seriously tried and true. A beautiful Sunday cruising the neighborhood studio/gallery exhibition in Bay wood. We saw the High street deli was quit busy so we went next door instead. There was one couple leaving as we walked in to a very empty restaurant, so we had our choice of tables. Our server handed us fresh clean menus and took our drink order. My iced tea served in a quart sized mason jar was brewed to perfection. The menu was well organized and offerings covered three pages. So we sat for linner (lunch & dinner) and had the place to ourselves with a great view of the bay and passerby's. Tam went for the chicken salad tostada and I went for the shrimp burro "wet" version for a couple of bucks. This is good food, fresh, flavorful, and well cooked My burrito was huge,there was plenty of shrimp and other burrito bits, It didn't look or taste like the meal was put together from the steam table offering but actually constructed on the griddle. Wow! I like and have tried many Mexican restaurants and food joints to have a good baseline established and I will say this place was top notch and literally right across the street from where we were staying. I have been eating here for several years and I'll just say this place is Simply amazing Mexican food and a very nice atmosphere with amazing bay views. Every item they make is a step above the others. Sauces, salsas are seasoned perfectly. The meats are top notch and also wonderfully seasoned and not bland. The drinks are also amazing. Food portions are very generous. Our family of 6 loves this eatery and considers it the best Mexican food in slo county and we have tried them all. My Wife is Mexican, and she grew up cooking authentic recipes from her Mother so she knows.. I'm not saying it's strictly authentic but it's higher end , and well thought out food.
