My family and I were here stopping over for a day and dropped in first as an included bed and breakfast from the place next door (aside from normal business hours.) The food was fresh and constantly re-filled from the self-serve trays/pitchers, but the service was so kind and eager to cook for the guests that the cook checked in with each guest and asked if they wanted anything specific and delivered everything directly to the table! We had to ask for napkins multiple times as each time the waiter/waitress kept forgetting but bringing chips and drinks. Chips were warms so they were crispy, but their salsa was nothing special. Good Mexican food with great service. A small family run place. I ordered a carnitas taco salad which, aside from lettuce, included rice, beans, onion, cheese, sour cream, guacamole... It could have been better with a bit more pork but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked that the iced tea is served in a mason jar. La Palapa is an excellent Mexican Restaurant situated near the pier in quaint Baywood Park. They make their own tortillas and serve them freshly warm. They have a great variety of dishes including a nice selection of local seafood. Their vegetarian enchiladas with mole sauce (not on the menu) are incredible! They don't charge extra for the house made chips and salsa that start off the meal. All the entrees I have sampled there have been good or better. The ambiance of the place is colorful Mexican with local artist (like John Ramos) works on the walls. The service is efficient and friendly. I was totally craving chicken mole and not many Mexican restaurants offer it because it's very labor-intensive. So after searching, I found that La Palapa had it on the menu so I rallied my good buddy and we went for lunch on Friday. We got there around one and there was not a single person in the restaurant what I thought was odd. High Street Deli is next-door and there must've been 50 people there, even my favorite Thai place across the street was pretty busy. We decided what the heck let's do it. The server was super sweet and we both ordered apparently the one and only menu. I guess both of us had a bit of sticker shock because my mole was pretty sure 35 or $36, and she ordered shrimp fajitas and it was about the same price. I was doing my research to find a place that had Mole, the menu that was on Yelp that I saw was $25 so clearly it was a dated menu. Anyway, the shrimp fajita portion was huge and my friend thought it was amazing. I had a taste. The mole sauce itself was very tasty but the portion was not so generous considering the price and the chicken breast was a bit dry even though it was covered in the sauce. The chips also were great and by the time we got served, I wasn't super hungry anymore so when I had the leftovers the next day, I gently warmed it in the skillet to prevent further dryness of the chicken. Came for dinner with the wife after having tried a few other family mexican restaurants in town. La Palapa is the clear winner in terms of food quality. I had a fajitas plate that was phenomenal. The little bowl of soup that came with it was fantastic, might just order a bowl of that next time for a lighter meal.
