Things change and so do people, and so it is with what once was a wonderful, truly Mexican cafe along Hwy 1 outside of Morro Bay, CA. They use to serve GIGANTIC burritos, stuffed to bursting with homemade carnitas and other meats. Well, the crowds were no longer there and there was actually parking available immediately in front of the building. And the building looked like it had experienced some hard times. One man at the cash register taking orders. You could read the menu behind him posted on the wall. Very basic options and the interior seating was at 1950s style linoleum kitchen tables and chairs. Probably bought at a flea market. We were crushed. I had a combo platter of one crispy carnitas taco at $23. Ground beef. Very basic and lacked flavor. Outrageous for over $20. Wife had two enchiladas a la carte, cheese and green at $13. Mush. At least we have our memories and hope that someone will come along to resurrect it into at least something close to what was. read more

If you enjoy fried, flavorful food and generous portions, this is definitely your kind of place. The setting is casual with both indoor and outdoor seating, and the service was fast and efficient. I ordered the calamari tacos, and the portion was huge. The plate came loaded -- tacos with melted cheese, a fresh salad, and a side of unique "spaghetti-style" fries. The calamari itself was lightly breaded and very tasty, and I really enjoyed the salad (super fresh and flavorful). The fries weren't my favorite, though, and overall the portion was so big that I ended up leaving quite a bit -- which felt a bit wasteful. My husband had the Alaskan cod tacos, and I actually loved that they were not breaded -- that's my personal preference. The fish tasted fresh, light, and really well prepared. Our daughter ordered the kids chicken taco, and honestly, it was excellent -- loaded with chicken, very flavorful, and clearly made fresh. We also tried the tres leches cake. The slice was large but for me it was a bit too sweet, especially with the caramel on top and the thick whipped cream layer. I know there are many variations of tres leches, and this one just wasn't my favorite. We also had a crab cake -- fried on the outside, soft and delicious inside. This is kind of our go to place in the area. Tacos are rock solid. Portions are generous. Prices like high until you see what you get. First time there ordered a couple of tacos and thought crap, that was a fortune. Then the plates showed up...good enough to split for each taco. Now my wife and I split the Baja tacos. And we leave fat and happy! The burrito is the size of a nerf football. Again, enough to split, or take home since burritos travel. And I can't forget the carrot cake. Again, seems pricy, it isn't. Huge portions. All "tacos" are a variation-on-a-theme with one's selected protein on two flour tortillas, topped over shredded cabbage, carrots, lettuce and radishes, with a few slices of cucumber. Today, we ordered their Scallop Taco which had a good portion of pan-seared scallops. The Taco was good, but expensive. The price point of most items can be a bit steep here. We also had a Chile Verde Burrito, which was huge. However it wasn't all that great, as the components were mostly black beans, a few grains of rice, and very little flavorless pork. At eighteen dollars, it was disappointing. One better like black beans over the regular pinto beans most Mexican eateries serve. Upon entering the restaurant, there's a front counter to place orders and receive a complementary large bowl of chips and red salsa. The salsa is very flavorful and contains chunks of tomatoes. One then chooses their preferred seating area and the order is brought to you when ready. There is interior seating as well as two patio dining areas. The interior is very plain and simple as their focus seems to be on the food although presentation is quite lacking. Friendly staff. We stumbled across Taco Temple while searching for tacos, and wow... are we glad we did! First impressions matter, and they absolutely nailed it. The gentleman who took our order was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful. I wish I had gotten his name because he truly made us feel at home from the moment we walked in. We ordered two enchiladas--one with red sauce and one with verde sauce--and a crispy chicken taco. They started us off with a basket of fresh chips, four different salsas, and some amazing pickled vegetables. We grabbed a seat on the beautiful outdoor patio, and they brought our food and beers right to us. The chips and salsa were next level, and those pickled veggies were so good I could have eaten a whole bowl of them! Now for the main event... My husband's crispy chicken taco came with a huge, gorgeous salad. The chicken was incredibly moist, flavorful, and packed to the brim. The enchiladas were perfectly balanced. The verde sauce tasted so fresh and vibrant, while the red sauce had an incredible smoky depth of flavor. Every bite was fantastic. We were so impressed that we decided to grab a Taco Temple sticker before we left. That same gentleman who took our order not only gave us a sticker, but actually came out to our car afterward to surprise us with a Taco Temple hat. It was such an unexpected and thoughtful gesture that perfectly summed up the outstanding hospitality we experienced. We've been away from the central coast for almost 7 months but were able to get in a short visit this week. Like all our other visits, a stop at Taco Bell Temple was definitely in order and as usual, the place did not disappoint. Taco Temple is a great stop for Mexican food when in Morro Bay. There is an excellent view of Morro Bay rock with both indoor and outdoor seating. We were recommended to go here by a local and it did not disappoint. You order at the counter and sit wherever you like and they will bring the food out to you. My sister and I go the street tacos and we were able to choose 3 different meats for our 3 different tacos and it came with guacamole, rice and beans. We split the plate which was a great decision because it was a ton of food and we were both stuffed. There were also chips for the table which tasted so fresh and they were super thin and perfectly crispy just how I like them. The time from when we ordered to getting our food was very fast. Taco Temple: Most amazing lunch ever! Having been stooping here for years every time I'm in town, heading up the coast. I ordered a blacked fish taco which comes with salad on top. Sooooo delicious. One taco is plenty enough. The shrimp cocktail is full of shrimp and chunks of avacado. Super generous portions. Totally worth it. I don't want to eat anywhere else. Come with a big appetite! A meal here is a must when visiting my sister. At the register they load you up with a tray of chips and salsa that you can take to your table. When the food is ready they bring it out to you. We each ordered a taco and they were huge be prepared to eat them with a fork most of the time there's just too much there to pick up. Even after stuffing ourselves with delicious tacos we couldn't resist taking a slice of carrot cake home it was huge and weighed over a pound. But I have to say that it was probably the best carrot cake I have ever eaten and that includes my mom's wonderful carrot cake... Sorry mom! The salsa choices were really nice but one especially a red slightly chunky salsa was so good! This is not a fancy place my understanding is it used to be a gas station years ago but is definitely a spot to visit when you're craving something good to eat! Food: 4.25. Came by after a visit to San Simeon this past Sunday. Place wasn't busy at the time we visited, around 4 pm. It was packed when we left after dining there. We ordered the chile relleno and lingcod tacos only to find out they were out of the lingcod. Halibut was ordered instead. Chips and salsa was provided for us to take to our table. Additional salsa and accompaniments were also provided. Food was delivered to us timely and at the right temperature. My chile relleno was very good and I really enjoyed the salad it came with. Huge portions and lots of creative tacos and burritos. Friendly service. We had a carne asada burrito, Alaskan Cod burrito and chicken taco. If I had to order again, I would get the tacos, because the burritos were huge and so were the tacos. Should have gone for some hot sauce since we got the burritos as is, which were mild and included cheese, rice, beans, cabbage / radish and dressing / sauce. Normally I wolf down Mexican leftovers but it took a while to finish these. I suspect it's the rice and beans I'm not used to. Or the salad thrown into the tacos (normally we just see cilantro and onions). It was fine. There's a ton of seafood options here so would definitely try more of those if in the area again. You will definitely get multiple meals out of your order. read more

It had been several years since we last came to Taco Temple and decided to check them out again. I'm glad we did, it was a lot more pleasant of an experience than the last time. Staff was friendly as soon as I walked in, got us a kids menu to draw on and even made our daughter a shirley temple. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating which was great since we had our dogs who were very happy to have a shady spot and water. I got the cod burrito and it was great. Filled with a lot of fish, the cabbage and the sauce was really delicious with the fish. I hadn't thought of the lemon, but it really worked well with everything in the burrito. Size is still quite large, but manageable to the point it is actually possible to pick it up if desired. Prices are solid and their specials board had so many great local fish options that I'll be sure to order next time. My wife got the veggie burrito and was quite happy with it. The sauce wasn't distributed to the ends very well, so her first couple bites weren't the best, but once she got to where the sauces mixed in she was very happy. Kid nachos were a good size, our daughter liked them. The rest of the kids menu looks pretty good too. I'm glad it's not as crazy as it used to be and that the quality of the food is really good. read more

Taco Temple has consistently great food and service! Their open face tacos are delicious and piled high with fresh greens. Their homemade salsa is excellent. They have lots of outdoor seating (and plentiful seating indoors as well). My only suggestion for improvement would be chips that have less oil on them. read more

While staying in Morro Bay, we wanted tacos and this place was real close and had good reviews. Had to try the Killer Alaskan Cod tacos, and they did not disappoint; they were fantastic. The ceviche was also really, really good. My only complaint was the service. We sat outside, waiting for our food for a long time, I went inside and saw our food sitting on the counter. A woman walked up and I asked her if our food was ready. She acted like it just came up, but I think had been sitting there for a while because the tortillas were soggy. read more

Took a trip up to SLO from LA for a friends wedding and was recommended this "taco" shack near our hotel in Cayucos.  "Taco" being put in quotes because that giant pile of seafood, fries, and toppings is allegedly a taco, and though I may have to disagree with their use of the word, I fully agree with the flavor and pricing of their food.  Super fresh, super tasty, and a nice side of the road view of the ocean. Strongly recommend the calamari taco and ceviche is you're keen on those types of dishes. read more

Order at the counter and no matter how busy they are you'll get your order pretty fast! There's lots of indoor and outdoor seating but today we did takeout of their gigantic shredded beef burrito and a carnitas platter. It will be at least 2 meals for my husband and I. We moved to Morro Bay a little over a year ago. We have been trying different restaurants, taking advice from friends who have lived here a while, and a couple of people mentioned that if we wanted to go out for very good Mexican food that we should try Taco Temple. I really wanted to like this place in part because we live on the same street just about a mile down. We were eager, we'd already found that Morro Bay is definitely a foodie town, and that the Mexican food we've had before was quite good. Now here's a restaurant that is promoted by some friends as being very good. Last night, my husband and I didn't want to go out, so we decided to order takeout from Taco Temple. We weren't able to order our food ahead of time since after three times no one answered the phone. So Mark headed out. Being a seafood fan, I focused directly in on the fish tacos. My husband loves tortas. But Taco Temple didn't have that. In fact, if the menu that appears here on yelp is complete, they have a fairly limited menu. So he decided to go with the nachos. We were surprised that we were spending $50 for a couple of takeout meals. After having read some of the reviews on here, I wonder if maybe we were charged some of those service fees that other people mentioned. When we got home and opened our food, we could not have been more disappointed by the appearance. Both dinners were quite unappealing at first view . But visual appeal is not everything, so we started dinner. It is an understatement to say we were not pleased. Let's start with my dinner. *Hang in with me, I'm almost done * The fish looked like it would've been wonderful if I had eaten it right after it was cooked. But what I had was definitely not wonderful. What I had was a soggy mess. The fish was on the top, the tortillas were on the bottom, and in between was a glob of wet produce. The bottom of the fish was so moist that the breading fell off when I lifted it, the tortillas on the bottom had fallen apart - again because of the moisture. I was certain that there was no mention of any produce. Just the tacos and the mango chutney. I checked back on the menu to see if I was mistaken, but the dish was described as, "Four Tempura Beer-Battered Cod Fillets, Deep Fried To A Crisp Perfection. Served With Mango Salsa And Chipotle Mayo." Nothing about any salad or cabbage. Mark's meal didn't fare much better. The chips were burned, a big absolute no-no with nachos. The toppings were "OK", but it was inedible with burned tortilla chips. Well, it all went into the trash and we went to bed disappointed, hungry and $50 poorer. read more

The Shrimp Taco was full of flavor and spicy. The Halibut Taco was excellent as well. I like how they have you line up at the cashier to place your order and then you take your tray to a table yourself. The surf vibe is enhanced by the ocean out front. Lovely place to eat a meal. read more

We'd like to rate it 3.5 stars but that is not an option. The steak fajitas were really great. The portion sizes are enormous. The beans are not refried but are whole - they taste pretty good. The rice was ok. The chips are very greasy and not so great. Salsa is ok. The carrot cake was heavy and too dense because the liquid to dry ratio was wrong - way too much liquid means they have to cook it longer to try to get it done which is why the bottom of the cake was overcooked. Also having too much fluid means the cake is heavy, dense and bricklike. This is unfortunate since the flavors of the cake and icing are pretty good. We would go back to this restaurant. read more
