It's telling when you see A LOT of people eating here, and we were cautiously optimistic. Yet, we were seated immediately and food came out less than 10 minutes after ordering! Being from Tijuana by way of Guadalajara, I think I've got really good menudo figured out - and this is it! Our experience was amazing! Service was just as good (not sure what the bad reviews are about, but everyone was nice, serviceable and very welcoming!) Our new favorite spot in the SATX area for menudo!

The roach ran across our table and we smacked it to present to the waitress. Once she was made aware she didn't apologize; she instead excused it by saying it wasn't on our plate. We couldn't stomach the idea of continuing the meal and asked for the bill, and she refused to discount no more than $3 off our $30 bill. So disappointing and so unhygienic. Cockroaches carry dangerous germs like Salmonella and E. coli which can cause severe illness especially dangerous during pregnancy which can lead to miscarriage, waving $30 was bare minimum. A complaint to TX DSHS will be made.

No. Did I know there was a Castroville-favorite restaurant there as well? Also no. We had to try it. Located inside the Alsatian Golf Club's clubhouse is their 19th-hole restaurant and bar: Julianna's Restaurant. Upon entry, you realize the place has been around for some time. It feels very classic San Antonio, with wooden walls accented by tan and white bricks. The restaurant's aged interior gives it a cozy, lodge-like charm. Though the restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday night, we were seated instantly at a booth that gave me a perfect view of the Georgia-Alabama game on the bar's TV. After nine or eighteen holes, you never know what you're in the mood for. That's why Julianna's has plenty of options: sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, seafood, steaks, and other meat dishes. Our server came by very quickly and got us our drinks, which for me was a tall Saint Arnold Oktoberfest. I had a tough time deciding between two options: a bone-in pork chop or their creamy Cajun pasta. I opted for the bone-in pork chop with a Caesar salad, bacon green beans, and herb rice. My dad got the creamy Cajun pasta, and my mom got the Southwest chicken. It wasn't long until the Caesar salad came out, with huge croutons and a generous helping of dressing. It was excellent to the point my mom wished she had ordered it over her chicken tortilla soup, which she also enjoyed. If you ever order a meat entrée and they stick a steak knife in it, you're in for an ESPN Instant Classic. The pork chop was huge, topped with a house raspberry chipotle sauce. It was tender and cooked well. I'll admit, trying to find the bone versus the pork was a challenge, but I think that was a me issue. I would order it again. As for the sides, the bacon green beans were sneakily running for Sixth Man of the Year, and the herb rice paired with the pork chop quite well. I would go back. The meal was high quality and felt like a hidden gem even for longtime Castroville residents. What a treat. RIYL: Going to golf courses while being very bad at golf.

The salad was good. The pork chop was large and it was chewy and not tender. The beans were decent and the fries were meh.

It might be less busy now as the construction worker foodies that made up most of their clients have dropped off now. However, coming to their brick and mortar location is more convenient for me as I enjoy having my lunch in an AC environment opposed to outside in the Texas heat. The menu is also expanded which I do like. I went with the Pork Frintanga plate. Pork is very tasty and chewy which is a nice touch to me. Add in the sweet plantain and fried cheese and this dish was definitely a winner. Big change up from the food truck meals of mainly papoose, which are a great food truck item. Service is a bit quiet, due to the language barrier, and their lack of speaking English probably hurts the business for non Spanish customers. For me, it adds some authenticity to the experience.

The food has that homemade, comforting flavor that just wraps you up and says, "you made the right choice today." Every bite tastes like it was made with care--not rushed, not generic. The portions are generous (come hungry), and the vibe is warm and welcoming. It's not about being trendy--it's about being good, and it absolutely is. This is the kind of place you come back to again and again when you want real food that actually satisfies.
