I was in San Antonio on a temporary assignment, and our supervisor for said assignment planned for a team outing at a Mexican restaurant. He chose Blanquita, saying the food was decent, but not necessarily the best. I'd say that's pretty spot on, especially for a small restaurant that I want to say is family owned? Not the most ideal spot for a lunch break due to the long wait times for your food, but with reasonable prices splattered all over the menu, you'd have to try hard to break the bank at this Mexican eatery located on the 371 between Cupples and Quintana. If you look up the restaurant on Google Maps view, you can see the 371, Cupples, and Quintana forming an obtuse, scalene triangle, and Blanquita is the only entity inside said triangle. You can't get in from Quintana, however, and if you try to get in heading north on the 371, ignore the left turn arrows on the pavement and just go straight. We arrived shortly before 11 AM on a Tuesday. Our party of just as many sat at three tables in the back, all aligned together. A couple baskets of chips were there to greet us, but there could have been a third. A bowl of red salsa and a bottle of green salsa were there to accompany the chips. The red salsa wasn't so hot, but that green salsa had a sharp kick to it! For whatever reason, I was thinking it was as mild as Peruvian Aji sauce, but I was waaayyyyyyy off! I think that green salsa caused me to cough a couple of times throughout our lunch. Yeah it really did pack a punch! A couple of waitresses were there to take our orders. The menu was really expansive that it would have been difficult to decide what to get had I not seen the lunch specials section of the menu. Each day of the week, except Sundays when they are closed, they have lunch specials that range from $6.99 to $7.99. On Tuesdays, the lunch specials were tampiqueno or three chicken enchiladas. Some of the others went with the three chicken enchiladas, but I actually went with the tampiqueno even though I didn't know what it meant, but it had steak as an ingredent, and you definitely can't go wrong with that! Also, the steak would come with a cheese enchilada, so either way, I would have gotten to try at least one enchilada. It took at least 15 minutes for our orders to come out, which might irritate the impatient. However, I did notice a sign on one of their doors saying they provide good, but *not* fast service, even providing the fair warning that orders could take 15 to 30 minutes to fulfill! Not all of our orders came out at the same time, but on the other hand, they all arrived within a five-minute span. Not bad for a party of 11 I'd say. My tampiqueno plate came with rice, beans, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, the cheese enchilada, and the thin steak. The beans were infused with plenty of flavor, but the rice lacked flavor. Lettuce and tomatoes were just ordinary, but the cheese enchilada was pretty good. The steak was a little disappointing because it had dried out quickly due to how thin it was. However, for the price point, it was adequate, especially since it came with some red sauce that I requested to be on the side; that sauce wasn't spicy at all. We were also given tortillas with our meal, which came to us in circular containers that I believe are used to keep the tortillas warm. Each container has four tortillas, and no matter what you order, they complement your meal nicely. Since there was plenty of sauce left on my plate at the conclusion of my meal, I wasted an entire tortilla just to sop up the remaining sauces left on my plate. They gave out quite a lot of tortillas on our tables, so why not make good use of them, am I right?! lol Service was indeed good, but I wouldn't say it was warm or bubbly by any means. Don't expect exemplary service of the likes of a high end steakhouse e.g. Saltgrass, but the servers did an adequate job of taking care of us. I did find unusual, however, that I wasn't given a straw for my cup of ice water while most others, who ordered a horchata/tea, did get straws in styrofoam cups. Rather than waiting for the check, you actually have to go up to pay. We stated our names when ordering, so we had to say our names again so the cashier could ring us up. I think when done this way, it would increase the chances of ringing a customer up for the wrong order, especially if there are customers with the same name dining in at the same time. So pay close attention when it comes time to pay! There's only one entryway into and out of Blanquita. When we drove out, we tried to get out by going south, but that led to a dead end, so we had to 3+ point turn our way back. Also, the lot isn't very spacious, so don't be surprised to see cars parked on the dirt/grass area. If the parking lot really is full, good luck trying to find another spot nearby. Overall, it's a good lunch spot, but still quite far from the best. However, the price is hard to beat, and my meal sufficed for the rest of my work day. read more

So, let me start by saying that I really like this place for a few reasons. The food is good. The tortillas a good and the salsas are picosas. And, I've been coming here for years. However, this is SA, and this is an SA joint. It's not gourmet and it's not unique in any way. It's, without exaggeration, one of a 1000 joints in the Westside and Southside. And, not necessarily the best in any form or fashion. So, this much money for lunch for one person is ridiculous. - a bowl of soup - a mini crispy taco - a coke $20.84! BEFORE THE TIP! This restaurant reminds me of Mexico. My friends live in San Antonio and they come to Blanquitas on the weekends regularly. We were visiting San Antonio and they felt it was a MUST to try this restaurant. The ambiance was high energy, lively and very colorful. The owner and her kids are in the restaurant helping the waiters and catering to the customers. Now here's the thing, I didn't try the food but I'm still giving it a hight rating, and here's why.. I am Mexican and not too long ago I became a vegetarian, the Mexican food we eat is the one I cook, so when my boyfriend and I ordered our bean and potato tacos, and our enchiladas we never stopped to think if it was vegetarian. We soon realized that the beans had probably been refried in pork fat and the enchiladas too. Which we can't eat. We asked the waiter and she confirmed it wasn't vegetarian. I was completely devastated because the food looked delicious and I was starving. The owner of the restaurant noticed we weren't eating our food so she came to our table and asked if everything was okay. Upon explaining the situation she offered to remake our order without the pork fat in it, at this point our friends were done eating and people started to look at us in a weird way which made me feel very uncomfortable.. it touched my heart knowing the owner was offering to rectify the situation the best she could. However we decided to go somewhere else to avoid the critical looks coming our way. Being Mexican, I could tell the food was very high quality and while it doesn't photograph the best, the fact that they have homemade tortillas makes this a very high quality restaurant. Our friends kept our food and they said it was very delicious and this is why they keep coming back. If the owner happens to read this, I hope that they take this feedback and add some veggie options to their menu. I myself eat refried beans using water and not pork fat. I think that this has a lot of potential and can only be better by adding some options for vegetarians and vegans. We are all entitled to our own food choices but for me, a food restaurant is one that is versatile and offered options for everyone. That's just my opinion though. read more

I have to say, it's been a while since I've been able to find a place that I don't mind coming to EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! The building itself is nothing to write home about. On the other hand, I have learned that can be a most wonderful thing!! I have had the menudo, not once but 3 times, 3 mornings in a row. It was just as good the first morning as it was the second! I also have had the huevos ranchero. Although I am not a fan of the sauce, the eggs are cooked PERFECT every time. The tortillas are also fresh. You just can't beat that!! I have not actually eaten a meal in the restaurant but I have ordered plenty of breakfast items to go from here so I can't really judge their in-house service. However, when I do go in to get my food, the servers are always attentive and professional. They have always been prompt and kind. These, I'm assuming, are the same servers that serve the people in the restaurant. The restaurant isn't appealing from the inside. Just your regular Restaurant that appears to be clean. They don't focus on decor but focus their attention on some good eats. My coworkers always orders breakfast tacos from here! They have always been plentiful and stuffed to the max! They make fresh flour tortillas and will accommodate you if you're doing low carb by omitting the tortillas if you ask. I always order the chilaquiles plate which comes with retried beans, fried potatoes and the chilaquiles. Chilaquiles is scrambled eggs mixed with pico, crushed tortillas chips and cheese. The cheese they use in not your typical shredded c cheese but a liquid cheese similar to velvet or liquid cheddar. For me, this makes the dish! Typically if they use shredded cheese it gets hard or sticks all together whereas the liquid cheese makes it smooth and definitely gives it another flavor note on top of the pico! The refried beans are one of the best I've had! It's seasoned perfectly and doesn't just taste of lard and pinto beans but actually has a layer of flavor that most refined beans don't have! The fried potatoes weren't overly crispy but perfectly cooked! Their flour tortillas are light, fluffy and made fresh! These would be amazing slathered with butter too or just eaten by itself! They have two different types of Salsa: red (rojo) and green (verde). The red is flavorful and you get the onions, tomatoes and cilantro. It has a slight bit of what but nothing that will burn the palette. The Verde is the one that gives you the kick. It also gives you another depth of flavor when you pour it on anything you eat here! I personally would recommend the breakfast options here! It always comes out piping hot and to me one of the best chilaquiles I've ever had!! read more

This place is always busy when I drive by so I decided to give it a try for some Sunday tacos to go! The tortillas both corn and flour are homemade, they were good but I don't like a flour tortilla that falls apart I think they add too much lard in the tortilla mix. The beans were good, again too much lard but they have a great taste, would have tasted better with cheddar cheese in my opinion, I didn't care for the cheese they use, tasted like the square processed cheese. Overall I think people eat here because the prices are pretty good and the food isn't bad. I would recommend to give this place a try, I'm curious to what you would think:) read more
