    Salmon a la Padrilla

La Perla has an extensive menu and I love it. There are many options for everyone. We decided to go with the Caldo Perla and the Salmon a la Parrilla. Both dishes were delicious and looked exactly like the advertised photos. The portions are large and you will surely leave full.

Auto gratuity for party of one.

Let me start with the bad, then I'll finish with the good. After a good meal, I told the manager that I wrote a beautiful review. She then gave me my tab, and I questioned why it was $10 more than on the menu. She explained it was the taxes. I looked the bill over and realized she automatically added a 15% gratuity. I've never had gratuity added on a party of one, I would've expected cloth napkins for that! Note on the pictures, it was still expected I tip more. She knew I was in town on business.... I heard her tell somebody that I noticed, yeah, I understand Spanish. Having said that, my waiter was very helpful. He made several suggestions, and I chose the Pacifico Molcajete. It had good flavor, and was pretty authentic. I was cautious with the spice, yet decided to add quite a bit more. as much as I enjoyed the food, the end of my visit really left a sour taste. I won't be back on my next visit.

    Shrimp and octopus ceviche

I tried the Shrimp Octopus Ceviche here. I am not well-versed in the ceviche world, so I can't speak intelligently to the quality of this dish. All in all, it was okay. The ingredients seemed fine: shrimp, octopus, cucumber, onion, tomato, lime juices, etc. However, nothing really stood out to me. I'd come back here again at some point, but I will try something different next time.

    Pescado

Not much of a lunch crowd on the day I went. I chose the Filete de Pescado from the lunch menu. Complimentary chips and salsa arrived quickly. Chips were fresh and salsa was mild to medium. The grilled fish had a nice crisp to the outside and was very flaky. Rice was like a pilaf but not much flavor. Salad was little more than a pile of lettuce with 2 thick tomato slices no dressing. While the fish was very good, everything else was pretty disappointing. Service was also less than desired. I had to ask for sweetener for my unsweetened ice tea and wanted longer than expected for the check especially considering the light crowd. I will give it another try before scratching from my lunch rotation but more likely to go with the traditional mexican menu than the coastal region inspired menu.

This is the second location of La Perla Nayarita. The original is located in Trussville, and this location opened in February 2017. It is a stand alone building that appears to be newly renovated. The menu says they serve "Authentica Comida Nayarit". Nayarit is a small state in western Mexico that borders the Pacific Ocean. So naturally the menu features seafood. The menu is huge, and the choices are much different from what you see at most local Mexican restaurants. I wanted to try a Mexican Seafood dish so I ordered the Camerones Estilo Perla. Our waiter described it as shrimp in a mildly spicy sauce, and there was a picture of the dish on the menu. I wasn't blow away by the dish, but I thought it was good (three out of five stars). The shrimp portion was very generous, and the sauce was tasty. The dish is served with rice and French fries. They were both average, and the fries seemed out of place. The dish also comes with a lettuce salad topped with slices of tomatoes. The salad did not have any dressing on it, and I assumed that was intentional. I applaud the restaurant for being unique, and serving food that represents a specific region of Mexico. The menu offers many dishes, and it will take more visits for me to narrow down some favorites. I definitely recommend if you like seafood and are open to trying something different.

    La comida es genial.

This place is a family favorite. The staff is super helpful and attentive. Shortly after being seated you are served with complimentary tostadas de ceviche. I will advise that the hot sauce is HOT. I enjoy spicy food, but for those who do not I would suggest skipping the hot sauce. I usually stick to my usual of the Huanchingo frito which is a fried Red Snapper. This time around I did try their Ranchero oysters. These were really good, but I will say I was not expecting so much sauce with those. We have been here plenty of times over the years and I have not had a bad experience yet.

Fellow Yelper Paul invited me to join him for lunch at La Perla Nayarita. Opened only 7 months ago, they are located at the "top" of the corner of Greensprings Hwy and Valley Ave. It's a free standing building that shares a huge parking lot with Harbor Freight Tools and Office Depot. It has interesting statues of blue fish outside and the interior is spacious with many tables and booths. They also tvs scattered throughout with a HUGE and I mean HUGE projector screen. Note that this is their second location. The original is in Trussville and it currently has a 5 Yelping stars from 28 reviews. The name of the restaurant references the theme of their cuisine from Nayarit, a state in Mexico. Bordering the Pacific, fishing and seafood is an important part of their economy and way of life. That is, they know their seafood. And it's glaringly apparent when you flip through their menu which is huge, heavy, laminated, spiral bound with lots of great pictures of the food and printed in both spanish and english. Their menu choices are impressive. Just their seafood range from oysters, clams, shrimp, crab legs, lobster, salmon, red snapper, and bass! We visited for lunch on a Thursday and it was not busy so we were seated immediately. Our server promptly brought us our drinks and chips and salsa. The chips were rather plain (I prefer the thinner/lighter chips), but their salsa was good and had a little kick to it. Matthew ordered the lunch special Speedy Gonzalez. It comes with one chicken taco, one enchilada with mexican rice and beans. I tasted the taco and the shredded chicken tasted good. Matthew liked it because he cleaned his plate. Paul tried the Camerones Estilo Perla. It's a shrimp cooked in a spicy sauce. See his Yelp review. I love fish and I love eating a whole fish fried in its entirety. Most of the Mexican restaurants that I've tried that serve fried fish do it plainly. But La Perla even lets you choose "al gusto" which means "as you like". So I chose my Mojarra ajillo (hot garlic). My perfectly fried bass arrived coated with a sauce made of onions and garlic that seeped into the fish... DcD (Delicious with a capital D)! It was served with a hard roll, delicious fries, Mexican rice and a small salad with fresh slices of tomatoes and cucumber. There was no "dressing" on the salad, but I believe that was intentional because the salad is used to cool and cleanse your palate if you're eating something spicy. Just looking at the photos of the food in their menu will make your mouth water and your stomach growl. I will be returning to try something else. Their lunch prices are reasonable with the dinner higher than most. I just found my new go to Mexican restaurant for seafood. Hello La Perla :-)

The waitress was great at accommodating our request

Wow. Even though I was warned by my local friends that this wasn't a "typical Mexican restaurant", I was blown away by the food choices. Yes they serve burritos, tacos, quesadillas, etc. But the seafood selection was amazing. This is truly a seafood restaurant first, and a Mexican restaurant second. Everything we ate was delicious! From ceviche to the numerous options of mix seafood they offered, were outstanding. I will definitely come back!! And it was very good portions for the price!!!

    Filete Relleno
    Rosa T.

I have been to the Perla in Trussville a few times but eventually tried this new location recently. I have to say that after reading so many bad reviews my experience was different and actually was very good. I had the Filete Relleno Which was a grill fish with different seafood on top and topped with melted cheese. Now this is mostly a seafood restaurant so it is recommended to try the seafood instead of their Mexican grill menu. When we were first seated, we received a tostada with Marlin ceviche and their very spicy Habanero sauce to add, so beware on this sauce. I actually really liked the marlin ceviche and decided to order a small plate of it for everyone to enjoy as an appetizer but we eventually received our plates and did not really get to eat it as appetizers. Everybody else enjoyed what they had which was the Piña Perla, shrimp cocktail and shrimp/octopus ceviche. We had their aguas frescas that come in a xbig cup and they were pretty tasty. So don't stay away from bad reviews if you are interested you should at least try it for yourself.

If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Birmingham this is the best place!! The menu is very extensive and has everything from seafood to burgers. There is a small language barrier with some of the servers but this lets you know how authentic this restaurant is. There are two separate kitchens, one for seafood and the other for the usual Mexican dishes. We ordered mostly seafood dishes. When trying a new Mexican restaurant I try the chips and salsa first and if they are good, then I know the rest of the food will be good. The shrimp ceviche tostados were delicious, the seafood soup while expensive ($55) was very good and filling, the whole fried fish was my favorite! Give this place a try and have desert at the homemade ice cream place on the other side of the shopping center.

This was a celebration for a birthday. Great parking available. I was unaware this place was even there. It has been so many things before. The best part about this place is the atmosphere! Karaoke night was great fun! There is plenty of space for groups and all the fun. The crab legs were the best entree! They gave you a lot for your money but they were seasoned really great! It was a busy night so service was alittle more difficult to get than normal I would assume. I also found the drink selection somewhat pricey. The margaritas were 5.00 but everything else was off the charts so don't get to wild at the bar. Overall though the atmosphere and the kind staff make up for any shortcomings. Fun night.

Seated immediately and ready to take your order as soon as you decide. The Standard Burger (Lettuce. tomato, onion, pickles, horsey sauce & american cheese) is really good. Fries are cooked just right. Previously I got a mix of the Fries and Onion Rings. Onion Rings are great too! I have had The Three Hander sandwich (Niman ranch corned beef, fries, tomato, jalapenos, creamy slaw, dijonaise, mozzarella on sourdough) from their original location which is great too. I should probably try other things as well but the lunch deal is hard to pass up. Since it is not too far from my office, will definitely continue to be a part of my regular lunch rotation. Only downside for me is the parking. There are limited spots on the street out front. Adjacent to the building there is a lot that is part of the apartment complex behind it but not really enough spaces for the 2 restaurants.

I got an automated message that said to leave a message and my call would be returned as soon as possible. I thought maybe the bar was busy and they didn't have time to answer, no big deal. Upon my arrival I noticed a very low selection of liquor, draft beer, or customers. The only customers I saw in the bar were two people playing pool. I asked the bartender about tequila. He asked me if I wanted a shot without telling me what was available or if that's what i wanted, which makes me think there is not much of a selection. Before I could ask what type of tequila there was to drink or ask what type of mixers the bar had, which I don't think there was much mixers to choose from by how empty the bar looked, the bartender then proceeded to ask me if I was "messed up". I drink rarely and take no medication. At this moment I hadn't had a drink in short of a week. He then proceeded to tell me that I was slurring my words, although that was definitely not true. He refused to serve me. I've been to bars all across the United States and this is the first time I've ever been refused to be served, especially before my first drink. He didn't ask how I was doing, if I was meeting friends, if i was planning on driving home, or getting a ride from someone. The bartender decided I was "messed up" within 30 seconds of me being in the bar. If a bartender can't tell the difference between someone who is 110% sober and "messed up", while making that decision within 30 seconds of a customer entering the bar, then that bartender should be looking for a new profession. I'm not quite sure if he was insinuating that I had been drinking, taking to much medication,or using recreational drugs, but none was the case. Maybe this is the type of bar where people often arrive to inebriated to get served or the bartender prefers locals and refuses service to others.I'm not certain this is the situation, but regardless it's extremely unprofessional and the bartender was absolutely wrong and unjustified. I will never be returning to this establishment and would recommend avoiding this bar. The next time I'm in this town I'll be sure to go elsewhere. I wouldn't return to this bar if it was the only one in town!
