I walked in expecting tacos but left with the biggest burrito I've had in years--easily bigger than a 16.9 oz water bottle! I ordered a Carnitas Super Burrito, which included refried beans, Spanish rice, carnitas, onion, cilantro, cheese, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole (my addition). The burrito was massive, heavy, and absolutely delicious. For under $15, it's a fantastic deal. There are a few tables and chairs for dining inside, which is a nice option. If I could leave 0 stars I would. We've been coming here for years and the food has mostly been consistent and good. Today we decided to have La Perla for lunch, but from the moment I walked in I should have walked out. When we first got to the counter there was no one there so I actually had to call out for assistance . Eventually somebody came to take our order and we ordered three burritos two of Carnitas and one of beans and cheese. I also ordered a pork rind and my mother-in-law ordered a Chile Riano. I wanted the sweet Mexican bread but it was hard as a brick. Our lunch total was over $50, but we don't mind paying as long as it's good. While eating our lunch my mother-in-law complained that her Chile Riano was swimming in sauce to the point that she actually had to pour it out of the container. Our burritos were smaller than normal but we figured it was just part of cutbacks because of Covid. I could deal with that, but one thing I cannot deal with is cockroaches My son who is five started screaming like a banshee that there was a bug behind me and as I turned around the cockroach was literally leisurely walking around the wall. like he was walking the dog! I told the cashier You have a cockroach on the wall and she yelled out for another girl to come and kill it. After a few minutes a girl came out with the bug spray and started spraying the cockroach! The roach literally jumped on the table convulsing, but not dying. Mind you, this is the that we had just vacated so the worker could kill the cockroach! She sprayed him again a few more times until he died a rather dramatic death on the ground, however by then the place smelt of Raid! Needless to say, we did not finish our food, but I did ask for a refund on my kids burrito and the pork rind since they were not eaten. The cashier (manager) who rang up my husband said she could not refund us without a receipt. I told her he left it on the counter and it was thrown away by her, but she said "there's nothin here" I asked her to look in the trash, but she said there nothing! I told her " when cockroaches come out and walk around during the day you have an infestation. I told her I know this, because I worked for the H.A. and this is not normal behavior. She didn't deny my accusation and didn't even say sorry. Her Unprofessional "oh well" attitude just showed the state of mind this management has. So, do yourself a favor, if you're craving Mexican food.....run! Try Garcia's down the street (that's where we went for our Mexican sweet bread after our bad experience) it was clean with a long line of ppl waiting to order from their hot counter. If you decide to stay and give La Perla a go, Just do yourself a favor and don't sit by the wall! This is one long time Latina customer who will NEVER be back ! read more

This place is trash. Carne asada is disgusting and tastes like ground beef jerky. Wait times are insanely slow, service is terrible even when buying groceries at the checkout. I was literally not even acknowledged by one single employee there and was the only person in line for a good 5 minutes. I legitimately considered just stealing my groceries. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else so this s**thole can go out of business. Let me first start off by saying that my family and I go here all the time. This place is absolutely great. Yesterday, we went and they had grilled shrimp fajitas! I've never had that before and I must say it was absolutely delicious. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and were absolutely delicious. I had a shrimp fajita burrito and so did my wife and I was so full, I couldn't finish mine so my wife finished it! La Perla Tapatia is probably the best place to get Mexican food in the valley. We literally have dozens upon dozens of Mexican restaurants between Riverbank, Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, etc. but really none of them compare to the quality and the flavor of the La Perla Tapatia markets. Every time we go, we always try to go at 11am, because about about 12, the entire place is packed to just about over-flowing. The food is so good, everyone who knows about food goes there. I've seen people dressed in business attire down to people dressed in yard-work clothes. The food is authentic California Mexican, having everything from burritos and tacos to Birria, fresh Chicharron, Menudo and great Mole. They also offer authentic dishes from different regions of Mexico every now and again. Their seafood is always great. I've learned a few things from coming to La Perla all the time. First of all, they sell packaged tortillas in the front of the store. Don't buy those, they're the same you can buy in the supermarket. At lunch, they make fresh tortillas that are AMAZING. You can get those at the counter. Also, don't buy their cheeses that are packaged. They're really pretty good and way more authentic than what you can buy in the store, but the best is the queso fresco cheese that they make (I believe it's house-made) inside just the plastic wrap. That's the freshest, most delicious cheese they have and it's some of the best fresh cheese you can get in the central valley. It's similar to fresh ricotta, but has a nice salty bite that's great with tacos. Anyway, my wife and I were traveling around the area, trying all the Mexican places to see what was best and without a shadow of a doubt, it's La Perla. We don't go to any Mexican restaurants anymore, as for some reason, the food is never as fresh or as good as La Perla. Definitely the shining star of this area. read more

I was disappointed that it wasn't fresh carne Asada like the ones at a real Mexican restaurant. They scooped a spoonful of beef and tossed it on the plate. When I am returning from a drive to the bay or the valley my last stop is usually La Perla for burritos. When I get home my family usually asks "Did you get burritos?" The difficult thing is deciding what kind. Carnitas are always a favorite, but you have about a dozen choices. You can see everything in the glass case and ask what something is if it looks good. There are a few small tables, but most people get items to go. La Perla also has a huge selection of baked items, fresh tortillas, all the spices and ingredients for your own adventures in Mexican cooking, and cold drinks. My advice, if you are not from the area, is to buy your lunch here and then drive a few miles east on Hwy 108 to Knights Ferry. There is a nice spot by the Stanislaus River near the covered bridge where you can sit on the rocks and enjoy your lunch. Or, you can opt for one of the picnic tables. read more
