I've visited this thrift store a handful of times in the past couple years, to see if it's improved. The management changed, promising more affordable prices. However, from an outside perspective, it doesn't seem like much has changed at all. In fact, I feel like it's gotten more expensive, and more picky with what items they put out on the floor. In general, it just feels like a boutique now. It's clean, well thought out, there are fancy, cool items, and a few more affordable things. If that's what you're after, you'll probably enjoy this thrift store. I guess I'm still stuck in the past, when it was truly affordable and had a wider range of items. When it really felt like a thrift store. Now, whenever I go there, I leave with nothing. I don't think it'll ever be like it was before, and while I truly hope that the new business model works well for them, since their mission is important, I can't see myself stopping by anymore. read more

I unfortunately had to surrender my dog to this facility because my dog was having behavior issues and my housing situation changed. Prior to surrendering him, I had reached out to them for help as my dog was biting people and I could not find a animal behaviorist in the area that did have a several month to one year waiting list. They gave me the number of the person that they use and I called her several times. She never called me back after multiple attempts to get help for my pet. Sadly I had to surrender him because I could not find a place to live that would accept a dog nor could I find help for his behavior. After I surrendered him, I started working on finding a home for him or a training facility. I was working with the director durning this time but she would never call me back after many many many attempts to reach out to her to try and find a solution for my dog. She told me "come get him today or he is up for adoption" " We are not a boarding facility or a rehab facility." Very Rude considering they are in the animal life saving business. So much for help from your local humane society when you need it. The director acted like I just didn't want my dog and wanted to just get rid of him which is not the case at all. I just needed help. Once I finally did find a home for him the communication at the facility was horrible with constant voicemails left and no return calls nor answering of emails. I had arrange a pet transport for him to another state and they just wouldn't call me back. Finally I got in touch with someone who could help me and finally have been able to get my dog out of there. The overall experience is horrible there is no communication and messages are not relayed in a timely manner. They treat you like you are scum of the earth when you have to surrender your animal even when you are really struggling with the decision. read more

partner took me birthday thrift shopping and i am super happy we came here an overwhelming amount of quality stuff from authentic vintage to new with tags - a one stop shop from housewares, furniture, gear, shoes, clothes, sundries, y más prices reasonable and of course for a worthy cause the only con was there is only one dressing room - and of course we hit a day where one inconsiderate woman spent WAY too long trying on their "maximum 6 items" (def had more) - i tried on the 20+ items i had over a tank top and under a skirt while waiting in line (i always thrift this way in case there is no change room) ALL while waiting for her to finish & she was in there before i even got in line! staff might want to monitor a bit more & do something when multiple people waiting in line complain as we did - both to the woman and to staff aside from that annoyance - i am extremely happy with my birthday thrift spree here!!!!!! read more

This is the most unique thrift store that I have been in. It is a large store with the items laid out like a boutique, but with thrift store prices. Items are grouped together logically, and there is lots to see. Definitely worth a stop if you are nearby. read more

I'm from out of state and saw a kitten that LPCHS had at Creature Comforts and fell in love with him. When talking to the employees at CC they said that LPCHS takes online applications and it's a bit long but it's also pretty thorough. At the end of the application it states that out of county and out of state applications may be denied. I was heartbroken but my friend that was with me convinced me to still apply, "You never know". Not even 20 minutes after submitting my application LPCHS called to ask if I would be still interested about the kitten... Hell Yeah!!! Good think I submitted my application when I did because they informed me that not even 5 minutes of submitting my application they received another for the kitten. I know exactly who submitted their application after me cause I saw that person playing with the kitten right after me. Glad to say that this kitten is spoiled rotten. read more

It is incredible the work they do at the La Plata County Humane Society. We have adopted 3 dogs and 2 cats there. The adoption experience is smooth and you get nothing but great customer service. We had our latest adopted puppy turn sick this weekend and we got tons of help over the weekend and a follow up visit come Monday. We want to thank everybody there for all the support and for what you are doing for our community. We are always impressed by your dedication and hard work. Hey Durango! This place has some awesome finds! I always leave with something awesome. Clothes wise the prices are fair, especially when they have discounts. The money goes towards animal welfare and it's nice to see the development of the humane society portion whenever I visit. It isn't uncommon to see dogs running around in the dog park area up in front of the store a little! Staff is always friendly and welcoming. :) the home goods here are great and they have a great kids section with books, toys, and stuffed animals! If I had kids I'd definitely bring them here. read more

A rep from the humane Society brought puppies into home depot recently. I was interested in adopting. I filled out their application and also went for and interview. She didn't ask but a couple of questions. Said I would get an answer by the following Monday. No response from her on Monday.. I emailed her Tuesday. That evening received an answer, which was because my husband and I work we were not suitable for adoption of the puppy. Very disappointed. We stopped in being a little homesick and missing our dogs. We brought a bag of dog food at my 2 daughters requests. All they asked in return was to love on the dogs. The people there care for the dogs a ton. Spent a good 45 minutes there and they let my daughters spend one on one time with each of the dogs there. Best day we spent in Durango to be honest. One dog is deaf and they are teaching is sign language. Everyone should donate money, food, time or anything you can to help these amazing people. read more

Store side is wonderful I think, as far as service and endless amount of interesting stuff to look thru. I live 3 hours away so I save my unwanteds till I can go to Durango to donate to THIS thrift store, not the other thrift stores between home and Durango. Well, this past weekend I went to donate but was turned away and told to come back the next day. I told them I live a few hours away, not possible for me to sleep in my truck overnight for that. They said they closed at 4pm. I think I got there around 3:30. I asked if I could just leave the boxes there and they could get to it the next day. I didn't want a receipt either. Anyhow, reluctantly, I ended up donating to Goodwill. And I don't like to donate to Goodwill. read more

Extremely upset with the shelter. Just moved here to Pagosa Springs and my son is moving in with me, though he currently lives in Denver. Found a great puppy named Henry last week, so I filled out an application and got an immediate response that I was approved. I had to wait a couple days for my son to be able to drive down from Denver so he and I could drive over to Durango to meet the dog. For some (inexplicable and stupid) reason, they had two dogs named Henry, so when I scheduled an appointment for a visit, I specified the 2-month-old puppy. The woman on the phone said, "yes, yes." So my son drove from Denver, then we drove to Durango from Pagosa and they showed us the WRONG Henry. "Oh, the puppy Henry," the guy said. "Yeah, he was adopted over the weekend." He very nonchalantly apologized, though it was clear he didn't really care, asked if we wanted to see another puppy, and assured us the puppy had gone to a good home. REALLY? He also said that this just sometimes happens. Well then, FIX IT. Adopting a dog is like adding a family member...lots of emotions going on and a huge disappointment. We were both livid. They were clearly incompetent from the woman answering the phone to the adoption guy and they DID NOT CARE about what they had done to us. Please dear God, let them treat their animals better than they treated us. read more

I had some furniture I wanted to donate to the Shelter Thrift Store. But SURPRISE! I was told at first that where I lived it would cost me $45, which had to be paid up front, for them to come out and pick up the items. And then, they said I needed to send them a picture first. I told them I didn't have that capability of sending a picture and was told that was the procedure. I told them to forget it and hung up. I then called another non-profit thrift store. At first the woman also asked if I could send a picture and I again said I didn't have that capability. She understood that a lot of people don't have phones to do that but it didn't prevent them from accepting my donation. They came out and picked up the furniture at no cost. This new policy at the Shelter translates to having to pay for the privilege of making a donation. I understand costs have gone up all around but it is the price of doing business. There are several worthy non-profits who are regularly appeal for donations of resale items. The Shelter Thrift Store's manager and/or board should rethink their position if they wish to compete and continue operations. read more

When my relatives come from Pennsylvania this is where they want to go. Truly a unique place stuffed to the gills with quality and unique donations -- no "old dryer" smell characteristic of thrift stores. Clothing goes through three points of inspection before qualifying for sale. Categories like kitchen, books, electronics, etc. are neatly sectioned off, i.e. you can drop in, go directly to Sports, grab a hockey stick and be out the door in 10 minutes. My livestock guardian dog (Great Pyrenees, Akbash, and Marama) has been very effective at keeping coyotes off the ranch. That is what the breed has done for over 3000 years. He was always friendly and non-destructive. After hunting season I thought he would not be lured by his nose to explore off the property. Some people had fresh elk carcass in their yard over the Christmas Holidays and he went off property tempted by the scent. Before I was aware of his escape, Animal control picked him up and never contacted me with requested information about where and what possibly lured him. The officer was acting as a dog catcher, never helping me to understand this new behavior. I added more fence, kept him contained and was shocked to find him as motivated as an intact male after a female in season (he is altered). When he managed to get out of my pen, she picked him up again. The officer complained to me that she had made such a long drive and effort while NEVER making any attempt to contact me. I left my name and number multiple times at "her" office but she chose to avoid contact and spend tax payer money to catch the dog rather than try to resolve the problem. I suspect she lives out in the county and this gave her a paid drive home. read more

Well.. i was having a fantastic day with my little chihuahua. We decided to stop by the animal shelter and check out the place. Came in the shelter with a smile and soon disappeared when a rude lady told me flat out that he can't go back there. She shouldve told me that he wasnt allowed in a nice manner. Not rude and loud to the point where everyone stared. Due to this, i wont be coming back. So if you want to bring a pet in, dont. I would give this place a 0 star. read more

Excellent organization with very active and involved volunteers. LPCHS does a great job of keeping the animals as comfortable as possible with volunteer dog walkers and doggy social hour. This place is truly making a difference for pets in need. read more

This place is awesome! I always leave here with something! It has tons of clothes and shoes, furniture and dishes, books, games, movies, etc. All the usual things you'd find in a thrift shop. Plenty of hidden gems though, just gotta rummage around for them. One thing to look out for is in the first dressing room on the right. The leg of the mirror sticks out and I rammed my big toe into it and bled all over. They were kind enough to give me an alcohol wipe, but no bandaid. After I finished, they told me they'd be sure to cover it up. 15 minutes later, I went back in to try on more clothes and did it AGAIN. So be careful!! Afterwards, I grabbed everything outta the fitting room and headed to the register, only to have the woman harass me for having an extra hanger, asking where the garment was. I kindly informed her that I grabbed it out of her messy dressing room and was met with a wonderful glare. Haven't had a bad experience here until now, so I wasn't really phased. Nevertheless, this place is a must visit. read more

This Shelter is amazing! They are constantly changing the idea of animal welfare and have made a great effort and change to Durango and the surrounding communities. The low cost public spay and neuter is amazing as it gives low income families an amazing opportunity to save their pets the trouble of raising a litter. The log time staff there is amazing and the trailer helps rehabilitate dogs that other shelters would've euthanized in a second. Some of the kennel techs can be a bit snappy, but the other staff have been very helpful with me finding my new dog. They bring in animals from other high kill shelters and continue to work in the best interest of the public. Also love their intern program! read more
