The service was okay for it not being busy. Loved the guacamole was made fresh. And they have a great lunch menu. My cousin got the lunch fajitas and there was a lot with 4 tortillas! My mom and I got the fish tacos. Please note they are fried fish tacos. Doesn't disclose that they are fried on the menu. And they don't come with rice and beans, just rice. Overall the food was good. The restroom was clean and they played good music. I also ordered a horchata, it was good. This place went down hill! Not sure what's happened to this restaurant since the last time I've been here & to this chain. We come a few times a year. The food was nearly unrecognizable as Mexican food. It was gross. Not Authentic at all & tasted canned. The hard tacos are basically store bought shells. The food look and quality was similar to Rosas.(Which is fine, but Playa Maya isn't fast food.) In fact, we waited for 45 minutes to be seated, even though told 15-20 and there were open booths and tables available. This was a Stockshow & Rodeo week, so I could understand if they were busy and they were not prepared for any customers. They may have been understaffed, and if that's the case they should have stayed closed instead of putting their patrons though the wait, and poor food/service. It was a 2.5 hr meal with really gross food, a 1hr wait after ordering, no drink refills, my drink didn't seem to have any alcohol in it. Multiple groups walked out after waiting so long for a drink order and not even chips & salsa. The restaurant was not packed. If we hadn't brought out of town guests here, we would have left long before but we didn't have many options by the time we realized it was a bust. Don't waste your time, or money on this place. It's between a 4 and a 5 star, but I've really enjoyed myself the several visits here so I'm going with the 5. It had been a lot of years since I last ate at a La Playa, and that was the location on Hemphill. It's always been a good place for some solid tex mex for me. But I just didn't get around to eating at them very often, and I had never eaten at this location, although I wanted to, when I was in this area, I'm usually going elsewhere. I have to admit, that I was over here to go somewhere else, but they were closed, and honestly I'm glad they were, because I figured it was my chance to eat here finally. Inside is nice, not huge, and not sure if they have any overflow dining. Small bar with a few seats, tables and some booths. Service was quick, looked over the menu. I was originally looking to grab some cheese enchiladas, but figured why not try something a little more special, so I ordered the Carne a la Mexicana. Beef cubes in a spicy sauce, rice, and beans. Also decided to try the Gold margarita on the rocks. Waiter drops off some chips and salsa, and corn tortillas. Chips and salsa are really good, and the tortillas are nice and warm. It takes a little longer for the specials to get prepared, but maybe 10 minutes later it arrives. It's a big plate, beef cubes "tips" I guess, surrounded with a mid thick sauce. I get a few bites in, and seriously, best beef tip type of dish I've ever had. The sauce is really flavorful, has a spicy kick to it, but nothing to serious. It's really tasty and really good. The beef tips are pretty tender, and also really good. The guacamole served with it is good, some of the better I've had. It's a big plate with the rice and beans, but I manage to finish it off and use tortillas to mop up the sauce. The margarita was good, and had a jolt to it. I got the large size and not sure drinking more than one would be a good idea. Everything about the visits I've had has been positive. La Playa is now on the serious rotation of north side stockyards mexican places I'll be going to. I think the carne special was around $20 or so. The large gold margarita was about $12. Both were worth every penny. Service was quick, and I was checked on often. There is some parking out front, but behind the building there is a lot with plenty of parking. read more

This is one of my favorite for lunch. I love their salsa and chips. One of the best things I like about dining at La Playa is the "Horchata", a traditional Mexican drink. I love it and since they serve it I keep returning to the restaurant. For lunch today I had one of the lunch specials that included a crispy taco and a cheese enchilada plus rice and beans. This is my second time here and I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt but it was still a disappointment. They did sit us down right away but since we were waiting for the rest of our party they didn't really care for us until everyone else came. I at least wanted to order a drink or appetizers atleast, but nope! We were there for about 10 minutes and the waitress finally asked if we wanted a drink. I got the carne asada and it was tender for such a thin piece of meat so that was surprising. It had flavor but definitely didn't need all the cheese that was melted on top. It did come out a little cold, I could of sworn on the menu it said rice and beans but I got rice and veggies it would of been nice if the server told me that. My family and I just ate @ the N. Main location after a day @ the FTW Zoo. When we arrived we informed the hostess who we later found out was actually the manager-that we were a party of 11. We were then sent upstairs and were seated. It took 30 minutes to get our food. Despite the upstairs dining area was completely empty and the down stairs had two couples when we arrived. The aqua de horchata drinks we ordered were sour. We returned them and asked for sodas instead. My niece witnessed them pour the drinks back into the container where the aqua de horchata was kept! Can you say health code! The chicken enchiladas had bones in the chicken. The fajita plates were skimpy and the flour tortillas tasted store bought. This is not Mexican or tex mex! I would give this place zero stars if I could. To make everything worse they charged us 20 % gratuity to my credit card without my permission and without my signature, and without notifying us ahead of time! Which is illegal. They should of let us know before hand. We would of left after tasting the sour drinks and not given them a second chance, had we known my niece witnessed them pouring the drinks back in the container. But she's a child and didn't tell us until after. Finally after we talked to the manager about all of this. She responded with at least they didn't charge you for the aqua de horchata! Wow. The food was really terrible. I ordered the 7 mares cocktail and it was so spicy you couldn't really taste the flavor of the cocktail. Also there was only like 2 oysters and just itty bits of octopus. It was mostly shrimp. Which was very dry and tasteless. Very expensive and just not worth it.. the service wasn't that great either. A recent effort to try a place I'd not yet been landed me La Playa Maya, where I just beat an impending rainstorm and settled into a booth for a bite of Tex Mex fare. It's a little on the boutique sized, and they were bustling. Service was regular but a little less than prompt, and in the end I ultimately settled on the Cadillac fajitas, featuring Rib-Eye Steak. I'll give La Playa Maya this: at least with the dish I ordered, we saw plenty of food, enough that if you anticipate leftovers you'll likely leave with some here. But otherwise we're talking about a pretty no-frills experience here, and though I got plenty to eat, I can't say that I really left stuffed. If I were in this neck of the woods again, sure, I'd consider a second stop. But I probably wouldn't go way out of my way otherwise. read more

They have more mariscos plates (mexican seafood) than anywhere I've ever been, and their traditional Tex-Mex cannot be beat, either. To be fair, I REALLY wanted to like this place. I checked out the online menu before even going, and was immediately drawn to the enchiladas del mar (enchiladas filled with shrimp/crab/cream cheese and covered in a "light" cream sauce). I didn't even glance at anything else on the menu, and when it was time to order I was ready for my margarita and enchiladas. Boyfriend order the chicken fajitas--that's all he ever gets at tex-mex restaurants. Our food came out not even 5 minutes after we'd ordered, and I was disappointed to find that the "light" cream sauce was just melted white cheese. The filling was nasty too, and I don't use the word lightly. I'm pretty sure the crab was more like "krab,"--you know the fake stuff. If you're going to substitute, just make that clear on the menu! And it tasted soooo fishy (not in a good way). My meal also came with grilled veggies which were too soft and white rice that was over-cooked. It's hard to mess up tex-mex, but it was so bad it made me nauseous (the margarita MAY have played a role). Boyfriend was fine with his fajitas, though. Our server was incredibly sweet and quick, and the prices were definitely cheaper than other tex-mex restaurants in town, but I don't think I can go back there. read more

Ok I came here with the bf for dinner for the second time and this is what I thought: Drinks- Happy hour Mon-Fri from 3-7. $3 margaritas and piña coladas. I ordered a piña colada, the bf ordered a margarita. I enjoyed the piña colada but I think the margarita was a little bit too sour. Chips and salsa - Yummy! Thumbs up! Meals - I ordered the chicken enchiladas and I liked them even though I tasted better , but I wouldn't mind eating them again. The bf ordered a burrito and it was huge! He couldn't finish it. I've driven by La Playa Maya many times but it wasn't until recently that I dined there. First off, they have excellent chips and salsa: thin, light chips and fresh salsa with lots of cilantro - mm mm. Being named Playa, they offer many seafood options in their menu and even some catfish! My first lunch there I had grilled tilapia with fresh vegetables and rice - delicious. My second lunch there I had the shrimp cocktail - the large size and is it ever! You get a large margarita glass filled with delicious shrimp, sauce, and a bit of avocado (again lots of cilantro), plus you get around 7 jumbo shrimp - huge! If you love shrimp, this is the dish for you! If this proves too much for you, they also offer their shrimp cocktail in medium and small sizes. Service is fine, nothing great, nothing bad, just efficient. I will be back! read more

As always the first impression is the chips and salsa. The salsa had good flavor and was a bit spicy but was thin and ran off the chip. However, when do ever really come across a remarkable chip? I've always thought the ones at El Fenix were a little unique in their corn configuration. For appetizers the not so lovely Stephanie (we were not getting along so well, major drama in her life) and I had the ceviche tostada and the "pick your fish" cocktail. Both were outstanding. I really wanted fish tacos so I tried the trick of order off menu. However, it backfired and they wouldn't produce the tacos. While there were many good sounding plates on the menu the one that sounded the best was the seafood enchiladas, which was also what the not so lovely Stephanie wanted. I hate it when we both order the same thing because then I can't sample off her plate and wish I had ordered what she is having. At any rate, the enchiladas were good, not great, just good. They come with WHITE rice and steamed SQUASH! What the heck? Whoever heard of that at a mexican restaurant? The enchiladas would have actually tasted better with better sides like a spanish style fried rice and sauteed spinach. But who am I, just a customer! Mexican restaurants have figured out that they don't need to increase prices, good for them. However, they have started offering smaller portions. While this is good for the wallet and the calorie count I WANT 3 ENCHILADAS TO AN ORDER! Not just 2. There's something wrong with the universal order of things when you only get 2 enchiladas to an order. I've taken to ordering a la carte so I can get the number of items I want without the rice and beans or steamed veggies that go with every mexican food plate ever conceived. Ok, enough ranting. The flan was good too. We've decided that La Playa Maya will be our appetizer stop on our mexican progressive dinner we plan to have along N. Main in Ft. La Playa Maya is a pretty decent place to eat, and I would certainly go back. First impressions: no parking! You have to park in a lot behind the restaurant and trek either on the street or through the grass to get to the door. The salsa was okay; the chips were pretty good. We went there for lunch and I've ordered fish tacos like I normally do and was amazed at the quality. This costed me only $8.95 plus some fresh quacomole and queso with chips but it tasted so good. The fish was fried crisp, plenty of vegetables and fresh cut avocado on the side with some rice and lettuce. Yum yum yum. They only use 1 tortilla so that I can taste the food instead of feeling like I'm chewing on rubber. Fish tacos at any other places have too much tortilla (usually 2 layers) and it really does not have any taste, but this place has the right spice and tangy grab. You gotta do it right! read more
