La Posta has a been a family favorite and a must stop for my family road trips since I was in Kindergarten. Every visit feels both very familiar and new and refreshing. The food is all very good, particularly the chips and salsa. The Pozole is to die for though I caution those not accustomed to spice it can be a bit higher on the heat scale. We had a wait time of 1.5 hours on a Friday for lunch. The hostess was not very friendly and when I went up to ask for how much longer the wait time was, I waited 10 minutes till she got back to the hostess station. We were glad we made a reservation in advance because there were quite a few people waiting to be seated in the reception area when we got there. We were seated immediately. Our waitress was nice enough but she seemed in a rush. It took a long time for my partner-in-done to get his drink. I decided to get the green chile enchilada. We were surprised to get our food in less than 5 minutes. It actually took longer to get the drinks than the food. I took the fact that the food came out too fast as a premonition. The enchilada tasted mediocre. It was unspectacular. We also felt that they were in a hurry to get us out of there in order to make room for the next batch of unsuspecting tourists. Firstly, apparently historic downtown Mesilla is adorable and has lots of shops and a little square where they sometimes have live music. The restaurant is right off the square, and proudly takes up about an entire block-it's huge! And, I guess it has to be in order to fit in the mini bird jungle they have next to the hostess stand! So goofy-do yourself a favor and flip through some of those pictures. We requested a table outside in the courtyard since it was beautiful out, and there was a guy outside playing an electric guitar over some instrumental music-he sounded a bit like Santana. It was very cool! Our server came by quick and took care of us. The chips and salsa were very good (a little on the spicy side), and I tried a bit of both the namesake tostadas compuesta cup and the steak quesadilla. Both were amazing! I also enjoyed the Prickly Pear Margarita-a little strong and not too sweet. Will definitely come back next time we're driving through! read more

Truly a disappointment! Childhood memories shattered! My 83 year old grandmother even said it's not the same place and the food is nothing special! Other than the environment the service was lackluster, the prices are high, and honestly the food has become subpar! You can't ever recreate that special environment being in Mesilla and the birds in the entry and the colorful decorations through out..... but the service was blah but I can chalk that up to a one time experience..... but the food.... what has happened? There were three of us for this special occasion, and all three said the food has gone downhill and is subpar at this point, especially for the price! Shrimp ceviche turned out to be half shredded lettuce so it appeared larger than it was, the Chile rellenos were the biggest let down - dry, burnt, and no cheese inside, and the combination plate was simply bland..... We were there on Friday and were able to dine in, although it would have been better had we gone somewhere else. They appeared to have removed tables to provide physical distancing, yet our table was very wobbly. I can deal with a wobbly table as long as the food is good, but that isn't the case here. The chips tasted like cheap bag chips, not high quality restaurant chips. The salsa is okay. Definitely not something I would want to buy, but it wasn't horrible. That is kind of how the whole place is, just okay. The chicken fajitas were okay, the tortillas that came with them were bad. The rice and beans were just normal rice and beans. The rest of the people (3) at our table had similar feelings about their dinners. With so many good places to eat in the area, this is one I will skip next time. read more

In search of The Holy Grail of Mexican food, we had to try this place. Alas, that grail is still out there. I will say that I'm very glad we went here, but the food and service was sort of hit and miss. I had the Banquette Elegante, which is a sampler of house specialities. Underwhelmed is the best way to describe La Posta in one word. Picture a once beautiful and vivacious actress that has now turned into a frumpy, b-movie horror has-been, and you'll get the idea. La Posta is blessed with a beautiful building that has a ton of rich history and stories to tell, but that's the best part about the experience, in my opinion. The good: The chicken and steak in my fajita was seasoned nicely and was tender and flavorful. My co-worked liked the Spanish rice, and the refried beans, but I didn't the eat them so I cannot comment on them. Our server was attentive and efficient, but she did seem quite checked out. The decor is certainly fun to look at, and if you have young children, then they'll marvel at the birds, the lights, and the colorful artwork. The bad: The queso, which was an odd brownish yellow color, was lukewarm and honestly flavorless. The salsa, while a bit spicy, was also flavorless. By combining the salsa with the queso we were able to at least improve the flavor of the two, but it was still not worth eating. The strangest thing about the queso was that it was served with a stack of corn tortillas, which I've never seen in the 21 years I've lived in New Mexico. The experience of spooning lukewarm queso into a tortilla to make a mushy burrito-ish appetizer was more than I was willing to try. The ugly: The tamale was ice cold, like it had gone straight from the fridge to our table. When we told the waitress, she offered to bring us another one, but we declined and asked to have it removed from the bill. When the bill came she said it was removed, so we gave her the credit card and then noticed on the new bill that it was still on there. She said she took the one tamale off and left the charge for the other tamale, to which we pointed out that we only ordered and received one tamale, not two. She was apologetic and offered to refund us the $2.75 out of her own pocket, which we declined to accept. Also, the chile rellenos, normally a delicious whole green chile stuffed with cheese, then battered and deep fried, came out looking like a green chile cooked in a pancake, and had no cheese inside one and a tiny bit of cheese in the other. This dish was also flavorless and the green chile lacked heat of any kind. All in all, if you're a tourist driving across country looking for a piece of New Mexico history to eat dinner and look at parrots and other exotic birds locked in cages, then this is the place for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for authentic and tasty New Mexican food, I'd recommend you try somewhere else. My opinion may not be the same as others on Yelp, but I hope it's informational and objective enough to be useful in your decision making. read more

Let me tell you when i came to this restaurant with my wife Evelyn we were greeted with the most friendliest service and a smile! The bird cages and the fish tanks in the front are a nice touch! Our waitress Valerie was SUPER friendly and she had the best service i have ever had dinning out at La Posta! She attended to our every need with professionalism and a friendly attitude. I'm my honest opinion the food was mid but Valerie's service was top notch! As she picked up our table and brought us the check she asked if there was anything else she could take care of I told her everything was fine and she did a VERY good job! I let the manager on duty know how excellent her service was! I left her a $50 tip as she waved us out with a smile on her face and told us to have a great day! My father in law took us here. We eat lots of Mexican in California but we were charmed with the fun atmosphere, great fajitas and service. Not a 5 star review because 3 of us had to send drinks back that were not correct and then not worth the money as they are pretty stingy with the tequila but the FOOD and Service was super. Wonderful place to visit if you have never been. The trinkets and animals inside will capture your attention for hours. It is historic and has developed into a staple of La Mesilla. It is a hit or miss if you go not expecting to wait quite a while for a party of five or more. Plan ahead and definitely have a plan B to fall back on. Depending what is going on around town, you could be looking at 2-3 hour wait times. The flavors are what some might expect. I hate being critical, but each time I try a different Mexican dish here I anticipate authentic, fresh, bold and undeniable flavors. Only to be disappointed. Do not get me wrong, the flavor is edible. It just seems to me as thought they have been "Americanized". We Americans do it with everything from Chinese to Italian. Drinks are amazing, prices are reasonable and portions are belt busting. Desserts are also a treat. I don't understand the hype about this place, I have had so much better at other places nearby. The menu was disappointing too: I studied the menu online before going there, and then it turned out that the menu online was their "pre-COVID" menu. It is late April 2021: that means that they haven't done any effort to update their menu for at least one year. Anyway, I found something else on the menu and ordered fajitas instead. The vegetables were not grilled well, but boiled or steamed, the tacos were tore or broken in half (not sure why I got tacos, the menu said tortillas), the pico de gallo was mushy - etc. I was just not impressed by this place at all and will not come back. I was disturbed by the lack of social distancing at the entrance: there is no way you can get inside without keeping 6ft distance. Server was friendly, location and ambiance were great.
