It was surprising to see "menudo" on a menu this far north of the border. Thus, like an ecstatic shark detecting a shipwrecked boater floating helplessly in open waters, I couldn't resist a taste. But I quickly came to the same conclusion as that metaphorical shark: it was no delicious, fatty seal. The broth lacked a distinct flavor and weight. The latter due to insufficient tripe, onions, and cilantro. And I found undercooked, pinkish areas in the pig's (probably not cow's) foot pieces--completely "no bueno." It's a bit of a drive from Richmond, but to me...well worth it. I've been to La Sabrosita a couple of times now. No, it is probably NOT the most inviting looking place to dine for many, but for me, I just love these little hole-in-the-wall joints. Stuck in the back of a small Mexican grocery store, La Sabrosita is a quint dining experience that is certainly reminiscent of the pool-hall dining one can find in rural Mexico settings. Yes, there is a pool table (one), and yes, there is often some music pumping through the speakers. Some of the staff speak English okay, but some do not. They seemed to appreciate my ability to speak limited Spanish though, and the menu is very descriptive of the items you're looking at. There is plenty to choose from, and both times I have ended up getting the mixed fajita plate which has been a good choice both times. Food is hot and plentiful, and service is always with a smile. Plenty of drinks (non-alcoholic), and beer (if desired). Oh, and they do NOT serve traditional chips and hot sauce. You receive a bowl of crispy wheels (a kind of a slightly puffed crispy snack) and some hot sauce (if desired) to put on them. They are kind of oddly addictive as well. If you like them, you can pick up a large bag in the grocery section (as well as many spices and cooking needs). read more

My family and I took a day-cation and drove out from the Hampton Roads area to the Natural Bridge State Park. After a really cool day of hitting some trails, we were pretty hungry and settled on Mexican food. While we initially planned to hit a chain spot on our drive home, I found this little gem with good ratings and reviews, so we shifted gears and decided to hit the mom-and-pop instead. And we are all so glad we did. First, it's a really fun mix of restaurant and ethnic market that happens to also have a few pool tables in the center. We came in to a fairly empty room (early dinner), but it wasn't long before a few groups of Spanish speaking buddies came in, started playing pool while they waited for their food. Seemed a popular hangout for the locals. Second, the service was wonderful. Two super friendly ladies were very prompt, and had just the perfect mix of checking on us with allowing us to enjoy our meals. Third, the food was amazing! I'm keeping the carbs lower, so went with chicken fajitas and just ignored the tortillas/rice/beans. My wife got the A La Mexicana w/ steak. My son, a steak quesadilla, and my daughter, the Burrito Ranchero. Delicious would be an understatement! The family raved about the homemade corn tortillas. We would absolutely stop here again! Cool spot, great authentic food, served by wonderful staff. If I had any complaint at all, it would be that the restrooms needed a little attention, but otherwise an awesome find! read more

Didn't expect this place to be pretty damn good. Just moving here from Cali I wasn't expecting much. The AlPastor was so good. Reminds me of one of my favorite places back home. Salsa had a nice kick. Homemade tortillas very impressive to find this far away from the border. The wife had the beef soup. It had big giant chunk. I'll give this place eight stars if I could. Don't expect to have the best service if you're an English only speaking person. The ambience is a little weird but coming from a person who's has a really high standards for Mexican food. Absolutely delicious, came here after hiking in Shenandoah national park and got take-out- ordered quesadilla ranchera, which came with sides of red rice and refried beans, and onion rings appetizer. The onionn rings had these orange and green sauces that really made it notable and the quesadillas were delicious and filling. Decently priced and large variety of things to order. Service was quick and very friendly, hardly any wait. Interior is homey and nicely decorated, and there is also some pool tables and what looked like arcade games. The restaurant was also connected to this mini grocery mart that had a variety of ethnic groceries like sodas, chips, fruits, veggies, and soap. There was a bakery section that was very tempting. I have not had the pleasure of eating there, however, I have shopped there and the cashier was the sweet young women ever!! They have produce, merch, alcohol, and many other things to choose from. Interesting place to eat. I passed it while driving due to lack of signage and had to turn around. Inside isn't pretty or appealing by any means. There is a Mexican grocery in there as well. The food service was very fast. The waitress kept speaking only Spanish to me even though I told her I didn't speak Spanish. I found this rude and they lost a star for this and the price of the food. The food was tasty enough. I do not like the thick flour tortillas. They were very tiny and not enough space for the fajitas. Over all would give the food a 3-4 and place a 3. Price is a 2-3 for me. The chicken fajitas was $20. I have had much better fajitas for cheaper. The chicken made my fingers yellow when I picked it up after dropping it??!! This is after washing them with soap and water. I came here with some friends for a late lunch. It wasn't too busy and we got to choose where we sat. We were immediately greeted with welcoming service and our waitress was very nice! I don't give out 5 star reviews often, but the food was too delicious for me. Hands down one of the best and even the best burrito I've ever had. All taco meats are served with cilantro and onion on a corn tortilla with red or green sauce on the side. The al pastor tacos had good flavor, enhanced by the pineapple and seasonings, but were dry. The carne asada and carnitas tacos were good but not great. Both could be described as a little bland and a little dry. The chorizo tacos were the most flavorful and best cooked of the four taco meats. Mexican Coke $3.75 each; Jarritos $2 each. Best hidden gem in town! A huge dining area with jukebox and pool tables, a small outdoor dining area with picnic tables, and of course takeout. This is in the back of a Latino market and has some of the most authentic Mexican food I've had in the states. It was conscientiously prepared and generously portioned. It came with a simple side salad garnished with radishes, red onions and cucumbers. She was in burrito heaven. I opted for the Huarache, a traditional Mexican dish that originated in Mexico City. It's plated on an oblong fried masa base (think thick corn tortilla) with fresh goodness on top like pinto beans, meat of your choice (carnitas style pork for me), pico, queso fresca, and more. Add to that a side of yellow sasson Goya style yellow rice with a deep but complex cumin flavor and some pickled jalepenos that mix well with the feast. Nom. So. Good. We didn't speak, we ate. And ate. And planned our return to devour the entire menu over time. This amazing restaurant is about what matters. Incredibly pleasing food, a culinary team who cares and a kind atmosphere. We were in the Waynesboro area, exploring the Shenandoah Valley for a week, and we came here twice. It's a small place, attached to a Mexican grocery. The food is delicious. The first time, we had tacos al pastor and tacos carne asada. They were very tasty and in homemade tortillas. We decided from first taste we'd come back. The next time we ordered quesadillas, which came with rice and beans, and guacamole. We inadvertently ended up with extra guacamole, because I tried to explain to the young server that I was allergic to avocados. Her English was not too good, and I think she thought I wanted extra guacamole. That was no problem, as my husband happily ate it. I scooped it away from the rest of my food. It was really my fault, since I knew her English wasn't very proficient, I could have just said "no guacamole for me", and she would have totally understood that. Anyway, the food was excellent.
