I currently live in Oregon, but had come to the area where I grew up for family business. Admittedly, the time difference has always been very challenging for me whenever I return east, so I forget to eat until it's usually just about or past closing time for most joints. I visited here during a vacation time this year. The town has a number of restaurants to choose from and this was on the list. What a neat little place to have some really good food. First time eating there but it definitely won't be my last. It has officially been added to our lineup of places to eat when we go to wintergreen. You can tell it's a locals favorite because soon after we got there it got packed. Just a few booths, a couple tables, and a row of high-tops at the back. Locals and regulars seated at the bar swapping stories and rumors. Good vibe. We split the Elk Burger, and on their recommendation, we ordered it rare! It was delicious!! Rich, meaty, and not even a little gamey. The burger had a perfect sear and true to form, a deep red center (not easy to nail a cook on a burger like that). Truth be told, if we were to get it again, I'd probably go a little more done. But who's complaining. The fries were excellent and there was a great selection of beers on tap. Plus a full bar, if you're feeling boozy. All in all, The River is a great place. We were passing through town looking for a place to eat when we discovered the River Burger Bar. What a phenomenal restaurant! Calling it a burger joint does not do it justice. This is fine cuisine on a bun! And the service is just as great as the food. My wife ordered their Fun Guy burger which is topped with mushrooms and goat cheese. I got the Sundrop burger which is topped with bacon, cheddar cheese and a runny egg. Both came out within 10 minutes, incredibly juicy and flavorable. The burgers come with their own homemade chips which I thought was just a bit too thick, but were still very tasty. We added a side of Lunker fries which are topped with large bacon chunks and more cheddar cheese. Everything was so pipping hot, we almost couldnt eat it. Afterwards, stuffed as we were, we felt compelled to try their Red Velvet cake which was equally wonderful. The entire meal was an unexpected, unexcelled experience. I really enjoyed the burger I had here, even if I did have to eat it with a knife and fork. The thing was massive! And the cheese and bbq sauce were overflowing. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it again. I didn't bother with a side of fries or anything as I had a pretzel as an appetizer and knew I just wouldn't be able to eat anything else. I would hold off on the pretzel next time though because it was a bit harder than I like, and most of the flavor came from the mustard and not the pretzel itself. The real reason to go back though is the staff. The guy working the bar was super friendly, and you could tell he just really liked his job. His interactions with the customers were genuine, and he even handled a fairly inebriated older lady hitting on him with grace. Stopped by to try their vegetarian burger. Was surprised they had two different options and several other vegetarian dishes so this was a must stop. I got the veggie patty (but they also have the Beyond Burger) with fries. My daughter had a cheese quesadilla and fries and it was massive. The burger was great, held up perfectly with the other toppings and the fries were delicious. My parents got the chili chips and loaded fries and they both really enjoyed their dishes.
