Continuing the hunt for the best vegetarian burrito in town, this stop was La Sirenita! Right on NE Alberta, you might walk straight past this older building without seeing their sign above you. It could be easy to overlook. But once you walk inside, it's much more colorful than expected. And with burritos ranging from $8-9, it's pretty well priced. A cheese quesadilla is $3.50, and single tacos range from $2-2.50. So how was it? Decent! I'd eat it again! It took me about 5 times eating here to hone in on what I like. I wasn't really a fan but now that I have tried the ground beef taco and ground beef taco salad...I'm in. They have a pretty big menu. Lots to choose from. Online isn't as trustworthy as going in to view the board. Tacos are filled to the brim and flavorful. Taco salad shell is perfect. Crunchy. Flaky. Yum. This is also packed to the brim. You can also ask for salsa to go. The mild has a kick so choose wisely!! Take out is always pretty quick. About 10-15 min. Staff are friendly. This is one of the oldest taco places in town, and, despite my long tenure in Portland, my first visit. I appreciated the bits of fat in the pastor taco, i like a little fat with my pork. The meat here and in the carne asada taco were freshly grilled, and the tortillas themselves had little grill grease on them. 4 sauces to choose from and some vegetables. Efficient service. A classic, old-school Taqueria with many cheap choices here (much better than La Bonita if that's all you're wondering). The basic tacos start at 2.70 (there is a little cash discount too). I'm mostly a taco guy but they got it all - tamales, burritos, chimichangas, tostadas and I think tortas. Their meat selection is big too - all the classics plus tripe, lengua, cabeza, buche, tingas, birria, and im probly still forgetting a few. I've tried a lot of their tacos and here's my judgement - Pastor: consistently nice and juicy, not too fatty. Those who like Korean style spicy pork will love this. - Cabeza: tender and meaty, not too gristly - Carnitas: good - Chicken: dry and flavorless - Buche: too greasy and tough - Tingas: dry Tho I wouldn't try some things again, they're good enough at the basics that I come back. Besides, stomach, head, tripe and tongue are always gonna taste kinda weird no matter how well it's prepared. The only reason I didn't do 5 stars is bc their chicken sucks and I wish their salsa had a tad bit more heat and flavor. But overall, solid spot. They don't sell beer but you can buy one at La Playita next door and they'll let you drink it there. read more

Haven't lived in Portland for about 20 years... but I REMEMBERED their Carnitas Burrito & HAD to come back for more! It was as good as I remembered it (but the sauce was MUCH spicier! But that's a good thing, in my book!) It's affordable & DELICIOUS! Their burritos are HUGE -- even my teenager didn't finish it! Normally I would have stopped at half on a burrito this large, but I couldn't stop eating it! "Just one more bite" -- I finally pulled myself away with about 1/3 left, which I saved for the next day's afternoon snack. My husband got the vegetarian burrito & said it was good, too. DEFINITELY a BIG FAN of this establishment! :) I was VERY sad that Covid is keeping me from having the horchata & the posole that I also remember as DELICIOUS!! Simple small Mexican restaurant. Quick service and lots of inexpensive choices. For me, the attention to the sauces, sides, and protein choices are really what separates a good Mexican restaurant from an average one. La Sirenita has excellent options in all of the above, so for me this has become my go to in the area. The crockpot of charred/flavored jalapeños and onions as a free side is an excellent example of how a simple extra can really set the place apart. At nights when I can't sleep, I Google "Best California Burrito in Oregon" in various combinations of words. I browse pictures and reviews of various Mexican eateries , hoping to find something resembling a San Diego taco shop. Until today, I've found hints of similarities, but none have come close - until lunch at La Sirenita. Here's the lowdown: California Burrito - choice of meat (weird to give that option, but okay) was carne asada. It's juicy, not tough and flavored like any San Diego Taco shop's carne asada. The tortilla is slightly crunchy, and the contents are piping hot. There's no BS beans or rice here - it's packed with sour cream, REAL guacamole, cheese and pico de gallo. Every bite was followed with a smile because this truly was home. Carnitas Taco - fantastically crispy pork, cilantro and onions. No frills on two grilled tortillas. Only thing missing was guacamole. Crispy shredded beef taco - again, this was so close to what we miss from San Diego. The meat is tender, the shell is perfectly crisp. Outstanding. It's far from where we live, but beats hopping on a plane to get a taste of home. read more

We stumbled upon this place while strolling the streets. It seemed likes hole in the wall place. I don't even remember a sign out front. But we knew we hit back pot when we walked inside. The patrons were mostly Spanish speaking and the authentic smell of Mexican food fills the air. We were stumped on what to get and asked first suggestions. We settled for a variety of tacos. The al pastor, carnitas, asada and the pescado. All the tacos are made with corn tortillas. The al pastor had onions and cilantro on top, drenched in a reddish sauce and was delicious. The pescado (I got the fired fish) was crisp and had great flavors. Those had lettuce and tomatoes on top. The carnitas was wonderful, the flavor was really great. The asada was good as well. I did also try the chili relleno burrito, but that one fell short for me. Tacos are definitely the way to go! They have onions and jalapeños in a crockpot by the register. Get some. They are grilled and were excellent addition on my tacos. They have several sauces, limes and pickled vegetables beneath the menu signs. I like their red salsa over the green one. Overall, delicious bite for fair prices. Stop by here and you won't be disappointed. read more

Poor customer service. Arrived at 8:10pm, ordered - staff starts packing up salsa bar and then gave us our order packed to go. We sat down as the restaurant doesn't close until 9pm. Was informed by staff we cannot eat in. This was not communicated at time of placing order. Ok, grabbed our order to eat in our freezing car and there were no utensils. This was another high school favorite of mine that I haven't stepped foot in since high school. They were known for their HUGE burritos and quick service. They were closed down years ago for a period of time and I was younger so I didn't know why, but I know they did some cleaning before they had reopened. Upon entering everything looked the same, literally no upgrade, old tables, chairs, counter and water/juice holders. We ordered: carne asada nachos, a carne asada taco, a chicken taco, carne asada quesadillas and rice and beans. We always order too much food and end up with left overs times two! But, in our defense we hadn't ate all day and our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs! The food was good, not exceptional or mouth watering but not the worst we've ever had. I think they're better for their burritos and it totally sucks that they don't have tamales!! A little ant crawled across my napkin and from then on I was checking everything for ants, luckily we found none. A little snack, better than a tostada, smaller than a huarache, but all the small indicia of goodness that I can confidently say points to a kitchen full of folks who know wtf they are doing and who's food you want to eat. Why all the fuss? That sope was made in-house, from some real masa. Not that hard, dry, stale stuff you can buy a bag of at any SoCal grocery store, but the real deal. Ditto w/ the condiment bar. Usually my go to is the chicken burrito (and for your lactose intolerant people it doesn't come with cheese...its the best chicken burrito in the city) but today I got a shredded beef chimichanga. It was perfectly cooked (crispy) and filled with quality ingredients for a fair price. The last changa I got was from Muchas Gracias (full of onions, wet and soggy, not crispy or cooked well) and the one before from La Bonita (more expensive and also soggy and tasted like the oil since it wasn't cooked properly) Good job La Sirenita! Their customer service skills are great I came in troubled to what I wanted to order and the cashier lead me to the perfect meal. There chicken chimichanga! Which I have been back for 3 times this week alone for! They have a homemade green sauce which is to kill for!! And there prices are the best around town. Although this is a restaurant they still perfect street tacos !! And if you have ever been to California you no how killer street tacos are ! First off this place is a TACO SHOP not Chi-Chi's or Acapulco restaurant (that you are used to) for your "BUSINESS TRIP" stops. The majority of people that eat here are CONSTRUCTION WORKERS like I am. People come here for the great food and more bang for their $$.
