Being from South Texas, there is no denying that I am a taco snob. I grew up on them so I'm the first to critique the tortillas, salsa, innards and toppings but with La Tejana, I had no complaints. There's no denying that their handmade tortillas are pressed with love. The eggs perfectly cooked, not too runny or dry. Bacon was crispy, just how it should be and those beans... usually an afterthought for most Mexican restaurants but they have just as much flavor as any other filling. Salsas hav various flavor profiles which compliment each taco in a unique way. Then there's the queso... which is an absolute dream. I'd bathe in it if they sold large enough portions. You pay for the quality and passion these guys are putting into the food and it's worth every penny. If you are a breakfast taco lover, figure out a way to get La Tejana in your hands. If you have never had a breakfast taco, immediately change that. You won't be disappointed and may even become addicted... which isn't the worst thing ;) read more

Breakfast tacos may be the apex of human endeavors and for some reason, Texans brag about (among other things) their particular skill at such things. So, the chance to try them without leaving the DMV was too great a lure to pass up. There are long lines on weekends and only three tables outside for seating, so if you can go during the week, it's probably advisable. As of now, they offer 6 different tacos - the five on their website and a new one, Uncle P (papa con huevo, or egg and potato), all served on fresh, house made flour tortillas. I scoured Yelp to see which ones got the most love, worried I'd somehow pick incorrectly because I have anxiety about the dumbest things, but let me assure you: they are ALL great. You can't go wrong! They sell them individually for $4.50, 3 for $13, or 6 for $24, along with some limited but great beverage options. (Their coffee is from Lost Sock, which is always great and was so today.) I started with 3 - the 956 (eggs, bacon, potato, queso, refried beans and cilantro), Super Migas (eggs, poblano, tomato, tortilla strips, onion, cheese, cilantro; vegetarian), and the El Frijolito (refried pinto beans, tortilla strips, onion, and cheese). Note for vegetarians - the refried beans have pork, so El Frijolito is not veg (though the Migas and Uncle P are). They come with one red (habanero) and one green (avocado tomatillo) salsa, which were both great. All three were absolutely stellar, built on that standout and expertly griddled tortilla, but the two with eggs were the stars to me. There's something unbeatable about the combo of perfectly scrambled eggs plus tortilla, and these were so good with or without salsa that I quickly got back in line and ordered the other three (they weren't as big to me as other reviewers said, though I expect those reviewers are also "healthy" and "not prone to see menus as a completionist challenge"). which were also all delicious even though I lost my table when I got up and ate them on the hood of my car like a crazy person but I didn't even care. When food's so delicious you'll look a fool willingly, you know you've found something special, and La Tejana is absolutely that. The super fast and friendly service and perfect-for-Mount-Pleasant vibes (and regulars, whose proximity I envy!) also merit mention. 5/5, no doubt. read more

Though there were about 15 people already waiting, it went by quick. The price point is on the higher side. But the food quality and taste is also on the higher side. The tortillas are so good. Tried a horchata, took me back to the first time I ever tried it. Space is in a busy area and parking is a luxury. Worth the trip, recommend for sure. read more

If you haven't already checked out La Tejana you are missing out. Their breakfast tacos are the best I've ever had! The menu is small but they have options for everyone (including meat, vegetarian and vegan options). Two or three tacos is more than enough for a very filling meal. My favorites are the choripapa and the super migas and I recommend getting extra sauces for dipping. It is a popular spot especially on the weekend when there is a line but it moves quickly. The service is always friendly. The inside is small (no seating) with cute Texas themed decor with some limited seating outside. The restaurant is both spotless and inviting. Parking is limited but when I visited on this Wednesday morning a space right in front of the restaurant was available. One thing I really appreciated about La Tejana was the wide range of vegetarian options available since the other options had pork in them, it can be difficult to find a restaurant that caters to my dietary needs, but La Tejana had a number of delicious options that were both satisfying and filling. I found that three tacos were the perfect amount for me, but if you have a smaller appetite, two would be a great option. Overall, I left La Tejana feeling completely satisfied and already can't wait to go back and try more items on the menu. In short, La Tejana is a must-try for anyone visiting DC. All the hype is real! La Tejana is delicious. We showed up on a Sunday morning at 9 and walked right in. No line in sight. We had the Tío Willie, 956, & Choripapa. All were awesome! There was also a special brisket taco, the 512, that stole the show. I hope it becomes a regular. My wife loved her Cafe de Olla and Super Migas as well. Staff is super friendly and patient. Texans know when it's the real thing when it comes to breakfast tacos, and I have searched this nation far and wide looking for the best outside of the motherland, with very few good results. La Tejana absolutely nails it, without compromise, and my recent trip there on a Friday morning had me homesick. Located in a small storefront in Columbia Heights, this place gets packed, even on a weekday, so expect a line. But once you're in, you're home. Texans will recognize the various art pieces and tchotchkes that line the walls and shelves, from Big Red memorabilia to an H-E-B butter tortilla candle (yes, it's real) to their beautiful homemade La Tejana patches on sale near the register. Their menu reads straight out of the RGV, and even features a few really solid vegetarian options. We settled on two Uncle P's (papas con huevo with queso) for her, and a frijolito and a super duper migas for me. They were heaven, served with the most refreshing red and green salsas on the chewiest, most delicate flour tortillas that took me right back home (I believe they do offer corn for non-Texans, but come on). While the tacos were outstanding, the one thing here that really pushed it into the top-tier was their absolutely delectable cafe de olla, which we shared while waiting for our order. Sweet, lightly spiced, and strong, I would get it every single day if I lived in the area. So much hype for this place! The first time I tried to go there it was sold out by 10:30 in the morning. Today I tried again and was finally able to get some tacos - yay! Good flavors - love the bacon and egg taco. Fresh tortillas are great & a nice touch! Something I would love to see more of around here. I enjoyed the salsas - the orange one was spicy but I'm not sure I liked the base flavor. Wasn't sure what that was though lol. Overall, worth a stop if you are in this area. I will say I would prefer more filling in tacos that cost this much ... but they are definitely tasty. I am sorry though - my heart belongs to Taco Bamba already! Tight ship service where the owners are front and center with their team. Vibes were great for after-work drinks and food with an outdoor set up that's vibrant with a touch of Ana's love for plants. With regards to the food itself, everything was fresh, delicious, and flavorful from start to finish. We (party of 4) got 1 of everything to really get a good taste of what LT had to offer. While everything was solid, we are still thinking about El Pocho Taco and the refried beans & 3fifty brisket in the chips and loaded guac. As for drinks, super aesthetically pleasing between the glasses and the ice with a LT logo imprinted. I was in Adam's Morgan recently and looking for breakfast options nearby my hotel - La Tejana had a pop up within walking distance in Mt Pleasant and it was the best decision i made that day. I tried all 4 options and was instantly a fan! I'm told they're made the morning of so there's no waiting, ready once you order, and they're the perfect temperature. I enjoyed the green salsa and went back the following morning for more! I just got there in time before they sold out. I'll definitely be on the lookout next time I am in DC. read more

As a native Texan and Californian who lived in Mexico as well, these were just OK. I was super excited to try but was disappointment as I felt they tried to "gringofy" this to appeal to the D.C. non Mexican population who don't have the same palate for Mexican food as someone in LA or where there is legit Mexican food. There was something off tasting with the tortilla and it missed the mark. Also, tacos in general were dry. Went once and haven't gone back. Tried to give it another shot and started following on Instagram to see where they would be next but then stopped following because they bring up their political views.
