This time staff were super friendly and was able to try the burrito. Burrito was excellent well seasoned and chorizo was very good. Had a ton of different flavors going on with the veggies and the potatoes. The chorizo was very good great smoky flavor. Sits inside the coffee shop the best way to order here is online through the website. Overall will definitely go back. read more

TL;DR it's good but I'd be extra cautious trusting them if you have severe food allergies. I was excited to try Monstera because my friends have all shared rave reviews. Perhaps I should've lowered my expectations when the woman in front of us returned her burrito due to an ignored request impacting her onion allergy... We stopped by around 1pm on Saturday. Ordered a vanilla latte and a Santa Barbara style bacon burrito with no cheese and crema on the side. The latte was truly nothing to write home about - I know times are hard but $7 is steep for a basic vanilla latte. For my burrito, not only were the dairy modifications ignored, the burrito wasn't sealed properly and promptly became a pile of slop. I had to eat it with plastic folk and knife, which isn't ideal on tinfoil. While the filler was ample and delicious, it really bummed me out. When you're charging a ~$20 burrito, I expect better customer service and a burrito you can hold. While it's a spacious location, there was only one working bathroom. It's chaos inside and doesn't feel streamlined -- whole experience felt disjointed. read more

This place wasn't busy at all on a weekend morning. Paid $2 for fried jalapeños that were not fried. (To be clear I'm against paying $2 for something that doesn't meet expectation. Clearly I'm not opposed to paying $2 for fried jalapeños bc I opted to add it on.) Maybe they were sautéed jalapeños? I even inquired about it and they supposedly topped it off, but I was still confused about what the fried jalapeños were. If you google fried jalapeños, it's not what they provided. Maybe they should update the menu to say "flash fried jalapeños" because it's misleading and really didn't do anything for this dish. It was just another mushy ingredient added onto this mushy bowl. Regardless, it took five minutes to pass the feedback onto the cook so the could explain and the cashier didn't provide any context. Not that good and didn't finish my burrito bowl despite being hungry with a travel day ahead. Half of this bowl ended up in the trash. It was a mushy mess that wasn't appetizing at all. Ideally there would be more distinctive textures from each of the ingredients, but this felt like an overpriced chipotle bowl. DC has a low bar for this kind of food or their quality fell off after opening, or both. read more

I ordered a breakfast burrito from Monstera on June 24 and was pretty disappointed, both with the food and with how the situation was handled afterward. When I opened my burrito, the eggs didn't look or feel like real scrambled eggs -- pale, uniform, and pasty, with no visible curds at all. The peppers and onions that are supposed to come with it were also missing entirely. (Photo attached -- top is mine from 6/24, the other two are burritos from other reviewers for comparison. The difference in color and texture is obvious side by side.) Worth noting: the two gentlemen working the counter were genuinely nice and helpful. They explained that the space is actually Grace Street Coffee, who run the front of house, and that Monstera is essentially running a pop-up kitchen out of the back, selling burritos through the same counter. When I asked about a refund, after explaining the issues with the burrito, they were upfront that they aren't able to process refunds at the counter since they're just hosting Monstera, and that any refund request has to go directly to Monstera. None of this is a knock on Grace Street Coffee or their staff. I emailed Monstera directly with photos to ask about the eggs. Instead of acknowledging the issue, the owner insisted the eggs were normal and pointed to unrelated photos of a different burrito (one with salsa fresca and crema, which mine didn't have) as if that explained it. He never addressed the missing peppers and onions at all, and never apologized. It took two follow-up emails before he'd agree to a refund, and even then it came with a comment implying I shouldn't complain again if "the color of the eggs bothers me." I've had breakfast burritos from dozens of spots around DC and never had an issue like this, let alone had someone argue with me about it instead of just making it right. Food quality issues happen, but the response here is what really soured the experience. Photos attached so you can judge for yourselves. UPDATE: The owner's reply is a good example of exactly what I described. Notice he again only addresses egg color and completely ignores the texture issue, the missing peppers and onions, and the fact that he initially argued with me at length before agreeing to a refund. He's also chosen to characterize my emails (which laid out specific, documented concerns with photos) as "threats" and "furious," rather than respond to any of the substance in them. I'd encourage anyone reading to look at the attached photos and judge for themselves whether this looks like a normal color variation of eggs and their texture or whether the response here seems proportionate to a customer asking for a refund on food that didn't match what was ordered. read more

My wife and I stopped in here for breakfast two days in a row. The first morning, I got a breakfast burrito and was pretty blown away. The barbacoa was delicious, the tortilla was nicely toasted, the eggs and sautéed peppers and onions were good, and the green salsa had a great flavor. My wife got the Monstera burrito and said it was just okay. I wanted another breakfast burrito the next morning so we stopped back in... and it was a totally different story. The restaurant had way more customers the second morning, but I could only make it through half of my burrito before not being able to eat anymore. The burrito had barely any barbacoa in it, the eggs were super watery and bland, and the sautéed peppers and onions were just slippery and like warm. My wife got on the of the croissant bacon breakfast sandwiches, and she said her eggs were the same as my burrito and she could barely eat her sandwich. The first day had us so hopeful for our return the next morning... but the second morning was such a let down. read more

Popped in after a run in Georgetown. The breakfast burritos are still really good. I do feel like mine was a little bit smaller than I remember before but I could be wrong. I got really full with about 3 bites left so I guess they are portioning it properly. I think I'm just used to CA burritos that I can typically get 2 meals out of. The salsa is super tasty with a good amount of spice to it. In terms of the service, they were quick and attentive despite the cafe being packed. I feel like it must always be like this on the weekends. I'd say we waited less than 10 minutes for our food/drinks. Everyone was friendly in the space and one girl even let us sit down at her table to eat. Stellar breakfast burritos AND tacos. First, the Breakfast Boi, which is great with barbacoa and chorizo. Loaded up lots of ingredients, including fries and salsa, this will keep your stomach full through the morning. Good breakfast fuel with a cup of Grace Street coffee. It's a bit up there in price for a burrito ($16), but I got two meals out of it. Don't forget about the tacos! A trio based on your choice of meat/eggplant will also keep you filled up because they are individually just as stuffed as the burritos. I was really happy with my choices for filling - chorizo, eggplant, and barbacoa. The chorizo had plenty of juices, so some of that leaked out of the taco. This is best enjoyed at a table. Honestly, the step seating on the side wasn't helpful and that was the only option when I went for tacos since Grace Street is so busy and filled with people studying or chatting there on the weekends. This place was not good... I went here because an influencer posted it and that video was viral viral. My burrito was so bland. I just had Taqueria Los Perez, a true Mexican establishment in DC, and Monstera did not compare. It just does not makes sense for me to come back here. The owner Alex McCoy hates on influencers yet he uses them to blow up his new spots. I've been to Monstera 2xs in the past 3 days. Went on Mother's Day and then back today with a friend. I had the Sun Up burrito both times and got the banana latte with oat milk today. The latte was a good latte but no banana taste/flavor. I heard about Monstera from an online food blogger stating this was the best breakfast burrito in the area. This is not it. I compare all breakfast burritos to Pearson's in Rochester, NY and nothing has come close. Both food experiences here are ehh. For $15/burrito, there is no flavor distinction and it's all mushed together. My friend got the Monstera with bacon and there were 2 thin slices of bacon. However, if this is your thing, the positives are- the smoked salsa verde is delicious. They should bottle and sell this (at a reasonable price, of course), the portion is more than enough, the eggs are fluffy and taste fresh, the tortilla is very good (maybe homemade?), and the service is friendly. For ambience, they lack seating even though there is room for more tables and they have an island/bar but no stools. The place was crowded both times so this would be helpful. It was large, messy and filled with many ingredients, which kept it interesting. Fav parts were the melty cheese, big pieces of tender barbacoa, sweet caramelized onions and peppers, and the super soft flour tortilla. It's extremely busy when I visited, but it's well worth the wait. We got breakfast burritos and they were amazing. Good to huge portions and such yummy flavor. The peppers in the Santa Barbara burrito were spicy and gave the food a good kick. The Salsa Verde also had a bit of a spicy kick, but equally delicious. FROWN. Somehow this was the soggiest burrito I have ever consumed. No variation in texture, no density, just fluff. I walked an hour to get this burrito and was sorely disappointed. And for $23 with tip? Insanity. If you have mediocre cooking skills, crispy hash browns, cheddar cheese, eggs, bacon, and some paprika at home, you can surely whip yourself up a better burrito (and even freeze some for later).
