My burrito on top, 2 other burritos from Monstera reviews below.

I ordered a breakfast burrito from Monstera on June 24 and was pretty disappointed, both with the food and with how the situation was handled afterward. When I opened my burrito, the eggs didn't look or feel like real scrambled eggs -- pale, uniform, and pasty, with no visible curds at all. The peppers and onions that are supposed to come with it were also missing entirely. (Photo attached -- top is mine from 6/24, the other two are burritos from other reviewers for comparison. The difference in color and texture is obvious side by side.) Worth noting: the two gentlemen working the counter were genuinely nice and helpful. They explained that the space is actually Grace Street Coffee, who run the front of house, and that Monstera is essentially running a pop-up kitchen out of the back, selling burritos through the same counter. When I asked about a refund, after explaining the issues with the burrito, they were upfront that they aren't able to process refunds at the counter since they're just hosting Monstera, and that any refund request has to go directly to Monstera. None of this is a knock on Grace Street Coffee or their staff. I emailed Monstera directly with photos to ask about the eggs. Instead of acknowledging the issue, the owner insisted the eggs were normal and pointed to unrelated photos of a different burrito (one with salsa fresca and crema, which mine didn't have) as if that explained it. He never addressed the missing peppers and onions at all, and never apologized. It took two follow-up emails before he'd agree to a refund, and even then it came with a comment implying I shouldn't complain again if "the color of the eggs bothers me." I've had breakfast burritos from dozens of spots around DC and never had an issue like this, let alone had someone argue with me about it instead of just making it right. Food quality issues happen, but the response here is what really soured the experience. Photos attached so you can judge for yourselves. UPDATE: The owner's reply is a good example of exactly what I described. Notice he again only addresses egg color and completely ignores the texture issue, the missing peppers and onions, and the fact that he initially argued with me at length before agreeing to a refund. He's also chosen to characterize my emails (which laid out specific, documented concerns with photos) as "threats" and "furious," rather than respond to any of the substance in them. I'd encourage anyone reading to look at the attached photos and judge for themselves whether this looks like a normal color variation of eggs and their texture or whether the response here seems proportionate to a customer asking for a refund on food that didn't match what was ordered.

My wife and I stopped in here for breakfast two days in a row. The first morning, I got a breakfast burrito and was pretty blown away. The barbacoa was delicious, the tortilla was nicely toasted, the eggs and sautéed peppers and onions were good, and the green salsa had a great flavor. My wife got the Monstera burrito and said it was just okay. I wanted another breakfast burrito the next morning so we stopped back in... and it was a totally different story. The restaurant had way more customers the second morning, but I could only make it through half of my burrito before not being able to eat anymore. The burrito had barely any barbacoa in it, the eggs were super watery and bland, and the sautéed peppers and onions were just slippery and like warm. My wife got on the of the croissant bacon breakfast sandwiches, and she said her eggs were the same as my burrito and she could barely eat her sandwich. The first day had us so hopeful for our return the next morning... but the second morning was such a let down.

Inside Grace Street Coffee in Georgetown is Monstera serving breakfast burritos. On my way to a meeting nearby, I picked up the Breakfast Boi with barbacoa. The burrito is very filling and comes with French fries inside. It was good, but the smoked salsa verde that it comes with it really made the burrito. Grab napkins as it's messy to eat!

Big breakfast burrito in Grace Street Coffee. I got the bacon filling. It was pretty good. It comes with a smoked sauce that has a good flavor.

Great spot for breakfast burritos, or burritos in general. Came here from word of mouth and it lived up to the hype

solid breakfast, large burritos stuffed with ingredients. they were out of the crunchy boi but tried the regular burrito with chorizo and with barbacoa (barbacoa was the easy favorite). burritos are tasty, the salsa is on the sweet end almost like a bbq sauce fusion (also tasty), wish the ingredients inside burrito were better dispersed but other than that they're a great and filling breakfast.

Super big and yummy burrito, pretty expensive but definitely worth it. Inside of a coffee shop with a nice open ambiance and good service

Very Disappointed. It took 45 minutes to make a burrito...and we came in the afternoon, when it wasn't that busy.

The standout of the morning was the breakfast side potatoes--crispy, seasoned perfectly, and easily something I'd come back for. The breadbasket came with three pastries, which felt a bit smaller than expected, but the almond croissant more than made up for it. On the heartier side, the chicken and waffles were extremely filling thanks to the dense waffles, so definitely a dish to tackle with an appetite. One of the biggest surprises was the brunch salad with salmon, which ended up being one of the best salads I've had in a long time--fresh, balanced, and satisfying. The breakfast sandwich was another highlight: so good that it's now the new standard I'll compare all other breakfast sandwiches to. The smoked salmon bagel was also a fun experience, served deconstructed so you can build each bite exactly how you like it. Not everything was a hit--the French toast wasn't my favorite--but the overall meal was strong enough that it barely detracted from the experience. Brunch offers a few additions beyond the regular breakfast menu, but overall it's very similar to their standard breakfast, just with a couple of extra options. It tends to get full on the weekends to make a reservation. Bottom line: Penbrook is a beautiful hotel restaurant that punches above its weight--excellent service, memorable dishes, and several items worth returning for.

The space itself is bright and airy and a bit on the noisy side. But the service was very good, and the food was served quite quickly. I've been on a shakshuka kick lately, so I opted for the the Sweet Potato Shakshuka, which is described as: Sweet Potato Curry, with Chickpeas and Sunny Eggs with a the chicken add-on - gotta get that protein in, after all. This was one of the most unique shakshukas I'd ever had... It literally tasted like a curry dish you might get at your local Indian restaurant, with a bit of a brunch flair to it. The curry itself had a wee bit of spice and was a bit sweet - but that could have been from the sweet potatoes. The chicken was served in a bowl on the side, which felt a bit... odd... I would've expected it to be incorporated into the main dish. It was kind of bland and a bit lukewarm, so I don't know that I'd order that again... but I would definitely order this again!

I had the corned beef hash, with was the most different interpretation of this classic dish that I had ever eaten. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious! But my first time seeing it presented as follows: both the corned beef and the potatoes were cooked in small, separate cubes, not blended or mashed together. As such, a whole new textural experience for the dish. They have both ample inside and sidewalk tables, and great service.

We were sat in the solarium area, and it was during the heat dome, and it was really warm in there. Otherwise, though, it's completely charming inside and reminds us of some of the best French bistros we've been to in the country (e.g. Balzathar, Le Supreme). The three cocktails we tried--the frose, le jardin, and the clouseau--were all stunners. And of course the bread deserves another special mention, *especially* the room temperature butter. Thank you for not serving hard as hell butter! We shared the warm shrimp salad to start, and for $31, we were expecting more than a few avocado slices and 4 shrimp on it, but c'est la vie. The dressing was incredible, and the greens were crunchy. That's actually the only dish of the night that we thought was unfairly overpriced. One of us ordered the burger and the other got the rabbit pappardelle--you've got to get rabbit when you see it on a menu, which isn't often enough! There was a good amount of super tender meat and the pasta was perfectly al dente, all in a lightly stunning sauce. Chef's kiss. The burger was, no surprise, another triumph. There was juicy meat, bun integrity, and all the right accouterment notes. The fries are standard. Our daughter got their mac-n-cheese, which is probably just the gratin dish renamed. It was OK. We kind of got out of control for dessert and ordered the pot de creme, the cookie dough ice cream, and the profiteroles. Honestly, these were all good, but nothing that stood out as exemplary as with the savory stuff. Our only major complaint was the service. It was really spotty and while there was a very, very long gap in between when we got our water and then put in our drinks, but our mains came out almost directly after the salad. And the guy was just not very hospitable. Not necessarily a "bad" experience...it just could have been a lot better. Four stars, and we have already declared that we will be back again to "The Dip" because there is so much else on the menu that we want to try.
