I can't believe I haven't left this place in review yet. Their breakfast tacos are on my usual rotation when I eat breakfast out and they are so good. The Horchata that they only serve on the weekends is one of my top favorites in the area. The service is always super fast and friendly, if you ever see a line waiting out the door on the weekends hop in it because it moves really fast. I recently went and tried out their Wednesday night dinner and I was so excited because they just recently opened at night. They're loaded queso with a 250 brisket on top was incredible and delicious. I love when their chips are hot and salty and there were exactly that. Definitely try the gordita crunch which I don't think is listed on the menu and it kind of a secret menu item but it's like the bougie version and I absolutely loved it. I didn't grab a picture, but they're Agua Fresca were so good and they actually serve it in a cup that looks like it's a margarita so you're not left out if your friends are drinking. I've never had issues with parking, but you just have to look on the street. The dining room is very small and tight, but it's the definition of a hole in the wall place. When they're open for breakfast it's more of a grab and go, and you can eat outside vibe. read more

Visiting DC from Los Angeles, we were excited to try this place and finally eat something on the east coast with some flavor (east cost people are adverse to flavor). We hit the metro from Crystal City hotel and landed here. The line was long! My wife and I looked forward to the dirty horchata (coffee and horchata)-- it was ok. Needed some more of that OG horchata flavor. I ordered 6 of the tacos, my wife, 3. While the food was good for DC, the tortillas stole the show. It was good to eat something similar to what we make at home. The two salsas, creamy cilantro and the red salsa were great, however, the line was long and it was hot! Two tips: there is no shade, so come prepared and there are only a few spots to sit and enjoy the tacos. The owner was kind and spoke with many of the guests. While La Tejana is worth trying if you are desperately craving a breakfast taco in DC, it does not live up to the hype nor is it worth the 15-20 minute wait on weekends. There are plenty of vegetarian options; all meat is pork/bacon. At $4.50 per taco, these are expensive, likely due to most tacos having eggs. I tried three tacos at La Tejana on a weekend morning and waited on line for 15 minutes. Once I got in, I was able to order and receive my tacos within five minutes. La Tejana cooks its tortillas well; they were a bit oily without being too much so. While the tacos came with a small container of salsa and ranch, every taco I ordered needed more seasoning and flavor. It is worth paying a bit extra to get salsas, bring your own, or take the tacos home and use salsas there. The 956 minus bacon: The best taco I had. The potatoes absorb the excess salt from the refried beans well and the eggs combined with the other ingredients to form a hearty taco. However, I couldn't taste the queso drizzle, nor did I see the cilantro. Super Migas: It was flavorless until I reached the middle and got a nice tortilla chip crunch with the taste of the poblanos. The scrambled eggs were fine; however, I couldn't taste the onion, tomato, queso, or cilantro. El Frijolito: A completely disappointing taco. All I could taste was the refried beans, which were way too salty with nothing to absorb the salt. I could not taste the other flavors. If you plan to go to La Tejana, I recommend going early on a weekday morning to avoid likely lines and it is not worth a special trip unless you are already in the area. Great, simple selection of tasty breakfast tacos and they serve one taco with the brisket from 2Fifty BBQ - my fav BBQ joint in DC. As someone who is gluten-free, I could only eat the corn tortillas, so I unfortunately can't comment on the flour tortillas, although my dining mates said they were delicious. The 956 is my favorite - although greasy, the bacon bits and potatoes really make it delicious. But what really makes La Tejana stand out for me are the sauces - a creamier cilantro one and a red salsa, both of which take the tacos to another level. My whole life I have lived in this area wondering what the big deal about breakfast tacos were because honestly...the ones I've had (even the so-called "world famous" ones) have just been meh to me. I saw that La Tejana was doing a pop-up near National Arboretum and figured this would be the perfect time to reignite my flame for breakfast tacos and also get my Vitamin D on. I was lucky enough to be able to get a walk-up order and ordered basically three of everything! When I dug into the tacos a little while later, my eyes nearly rolled to the back of my head. There is something about perfectly fluffy scrambled eggs, mixed with fresh salsa, roasted potatoes, bacon and a handmade flour tortilla that makes it seem like all is right in the world. Mixed in with that picnic in the park atmosphere? I felt like I was on the West Coast again. We also tried the Chorizo, Super Migas and bean tacos and fell in love as well. Even a few hours later and chilled in a fridge the tacos held up really well! I have a feeling its the handmade tortilla that just really makes a simple breakfast taco like this superior. Worth the hype! It was a drizzly day but not enough to deter me from stopping by La Tejana for the first time. There was a little coverage from the tent, but the line moved steadily along. Service was stellar :-) very friendly and prompt employees who make delicious food. I got the 956 and La Choripapa, both super tasty. Hard to choose a favorite! While the tacos are superb on their own, the sauces are great. I loved the green sauce the best. I really enjoyed the dirty horchata drink! I would recommend giving it a thorough stir and tasting before you head out, in case you'd like to add more cinnamon or simple syrup to taste. Hate to be one of the few low star reviews here, but I'm here to be honest! Firstly, cute place and friendly staff! There was a line for the tacos. No pics of the food bc I was eating on the go. I got the 956 w no bacon and the Super Migas. I felt that the Super Migas was pretty one note in flavor--while you do slightly taste the flavor of cilantro and maybe poblano, it's just overwhelmingly prominent with egg. I think that it needs some pops of acid or maybe a saltier cheese to complement the creamy egg. I also felt that it really needed some texture, bc it felt like just mush-I think bigger pieces of poblano and onion would help there. Because truthfully I didn't taste or see any onion in there and definitely didn't taste any tortilla strips which would help the texture. I also didn't really taste any queso drizzle The 956 was slightly better texturally bc of the potatoes and flavor wise bc of the refried beans. But still felt it was kinda of lacking in flavor, which the potatoes would've been a perfect vessel to have some more seasoning. Will def give them 5 stars on the quality of the flour tortilla, super fresh and soft!!! Also tried the Dirty Horchata, first couple sips I didn't really care for it, tasted more like acidic coffee. I've been meaning to stop by here for while, and finally had a chance to do so earlier today. The decor was nice and the menu options are limited, but good overall. I've never had Texas style breakfast tacos - I have had New Mexican style breakfast tacos, which may be in a whole other lane - so I didn't know what to compare these to. I tried the choripapa, 956, and Tio Willie tacos. My girlfriend liked the 956 taco and I liked the Tio Willie taco. The portions were just right and each taco was made fresh to order. We went two mornings in a row when we were visiting, and for good reason, the line was LONG. It moved quickly and was absolutely worth the wait. First bite, a little disappointed by the lack of flavor. Second bite, quite disappointed by the runny eggs inside. Third bite, all was lost. I tried three different vegetarian tacos, all equally disappointing. And I really wanted to love this spot, especially given how hard it is to find a decent vegetarian taco in DC. I don't even know where to start. I had never heard of La Tejana but I went to a toddler's birthday party where they had breakfast tacos catered since it was a mid-morning celebration. The description of each taco made it hard to pick, so I went to town and tried three of the five tacos available. I honestly don't know what was in each other than eggs and either potatoes, beans, or chorizo. These little bundles of joy were absolutely exquisite. Homemade tortillas, scrambled eggs, and other toppings. Also, let me tell you about that red salsa: amazing! Smoky and with a kick to it. The white, cilantro sauce was also really good. Is this the type of place I'd go out of my way to visit? Absolutely. Is this a place you should cater your next morning celebration from? That's a no brainer. I ordered their vegetarian super migas taco and it was delicious! I also got their habanero salsa on the side, and all of their tacos come with their cilantro crema and charred tomato. The habenero salsa wasn't spicy at all, but it still had pretty good flavor! I wasn't super hungry so I didn't opt for the 3 tacos deal, but I was extremely delighted with my order. I also tried their loaded fries, which was a crinkle cut fries with their queso and brisket. That was my favorite! Loved it, I threw on those sauces and it was so hot and fresh. I have heard so many great things about this spot so I had to try it out. Its a very cute and inviting neighborhood haunt and everyone here is uber nice. I ordered three of the chorizo tacos and a coke. There was a bit fo a wait before I could order, but again, the fact that everyone was so nice I certainly didn't mind waiting. The tacos aren't great, but they aren't bad. Perhaps hearing all the hype set my expectations too high, but they are breakfast tacos, nothing spectacular at that price point IMO.
