La Terraza is tucked away in the back off 4th Street, so it's a bit hidden, but there is street parking available which makes it convenient once you find it. We went on a Friday evening and it wasn't very busy. As soon as we walked in, the staff noticed us right away and asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. Since it was a nice day, we chose to sit outside, which made for a great vibe. Our drinks came out in about five minutes. I ordered the bourbon margarita and it was really good. I definitely enjoyed that. After that, we ordered our food. We got the shredded chicken quesadilla, shrimp tacos, and queso for appetizers. The queso was okay, it tasted like a standard cheese dip and could have used a little more spice or something to make it stand out. The quesadilla, on the other hand, was very good. It was well cooked and seasoned nicely, but I did notice that it didn't come with rice unless you order it separately. The shrimp tacos were also good and I had no complaints there. The staff checked on us a couple of times throughout the visit and were very friendly, which I appreciated. The restaurant itself also looked clean and well kept. Overall, I'd give La Terraza 4 out of 5 stars. It's a solid spot with good food and service, but it didn't feel like your traditional Mexican restaurant and the menu is a bit on the smaller side. Went here before a concert. VERY disappointed. We got drinks. Fine, usual go out Saturday prices I suppose. Got a single taco which was fine. Got nachos. Ugh. They came in a food truck paper box. TONS of string onions on top. Also string jalapeños. I wish I took a before pic. Here's an after pic. It's white people Mexican, which is fine! Give the people what they want! But the lack of spices was a little disappointing for me. I ordered the steak fajitas and they came with avocado and two sauces. Except the sauces were in these tiny spoons and it was maybe a tablespoon each. Not nearly enough for the dish. No salsa or hot sauce at the table either - La Terraza, give the people more sauce! I also tried the queso dip with chorizo which was delicious. The layout is nice, especially if you are by a window and can watch the world go by. I would definitely come back but I would ask for more hot sauce at the beginning! read more

La Terraza is a new Mexican eatery on 4th Street that occupies the space that used to be the Bluegrass Brewing Company. I recently visited for the first time and, while I miss Bluegrass Brewing immensely, I can see where La Terraza can be its own kind of awesome. My visit was for lunch with a large-ish group and they handled it nicely. The menus were on printed paper, but they had a large selection available for lunch and for pretty reasonable prices. Someone ordered the chips and queso with chorizo appetizer and .... WOW. Excellent stuff! For lunch I ordered something I seldom get a change to get, and that was ceviche. Specifically ceviche tostadas, which amounted to some crispy deep fried tostada shells and a bowl of fresh ceviche...and it was OUTSTANDING. I know some people that turn their noses up at ceviche because it's not cooked with heat but the same will eat sushi like it's their last meal. #GoFigure. For having a group of roughly 12 people, the staff did a great job of handling a group of this size. It basically amounted to 2 servers who were constantly in motion handling not only our table, but several other tables at the same time. Aggressively fine. This location has been several different businesses in the last 5-10 years and I have been most of them. Usually not by an active desire to go, but by convenience of location prior to a show. This restaurant and location benefits greatly, I believe, by its proximity to The Palace, The Brown Theater, and Mercury Ballroom. I was attending a show with a friend at the Palace and she suggested we eat here. The service was...ok. Luckily we were there early enough that we weren't in a rush. The food was also...ok. The best thing was certainly the margaritas, which I recall were made by the drink and not from a syrupy mix. We had a fine time, it was ok. I wouldn't choose it for any other occasion really, besides pre-show nibbles. But it is there if you need a Mexican food fix mid-day or early evening and you are down town in the Fourth Street area. read more

Stubbled upon this restaurant while I was attending a conference at the Brown Hotel as it is directly across the street. I had started walking to a Mediterranean spot when the music caught my attention. I quickly opened yelp to see what the reviews were and they were great so I decided to give it a try instead and honestly I don't think I could have made a better choice! The tacos and guacamole I had were so good and so fresh I ended up eating there twice in one day!! The inside of the restaurant was very clean and the staff were very nice, great service all around!! After reading several excellent reviews, I was excited to try this place out. Overall, it's good, but nothing exceptional. We started with queso and drinks. The queso was pretty bland. The drinks were very good (margaritas - berry, original, and dragon fruit). They didn't have what they needed to make mojitos. Most of us ended up with a carnitas dish. Two quesadillas, one fajita style and one plain. They were very good. One carnitas burrito bowl. Oddly enough, it had peas in it. That was unexpected but the 7 year old still ate it. The last entree was also a quesadilla but a steak and it was also good. Service was good and the restaurant was a nice set up however there was little in the way of decor. As a side note, I really wish Mexican restaurants would go back to traditional refried beans. I don't like the new trend of making them spicy (it wasn't super spicy but still had an edge). read more

Lots of seating and out door seating. Family friendly so the kids felt comfortable. My son ordered the steak torta. He said it was the "best torta" he has ever had. My teenage daughter ordered the chicken fajitas. They were tasty but the rice it came with was a little lacking. We were expecting orange rice. It was a short grain with no flavor. I had the sopes. They were great. And my husband had the chilaquiles. Also very good. Service was great. Seems family owned. The restaurant had a very much industrial feel. It works. Came in today to get some lunch since I'm working in the office today. Wanted to try something different and this place was new to the area, I ordered a quesadilla and fries. Food was prepared pretty quickly, had my order and out the door before I got going on this review. The people were friendly and very welcoming. Based on service alone I'd come back. Gotta check this food out first. Ok I only needed to eat one wedge of the quesadilla to know that the food is delicious! There's great flavor and the cheese is melted also there is a spicy sauce that came with it that is delicious. The fries were seasoned curly fries and served with a side of ranch. Overall I'll definitely be back when I'm in the office, they have a few other items I need to try to make sure this wasn't a one time fluke lol. read more

I just had the best quesadilla I ever had. If you want the same, Carnitas, and go big with the fajita style. My lady had the fish tacos and just as much flavor as mine. Placed a reservation for 6:30 on a Saturday over the phone. Arrived and was told they did not take reservations - even though someone took reservation over the phone. Restaurant was not busy so we were still given seat luckily. We were seated at 6:30pm and food did not arrive until 8:15 pm..... not sure why. The restaurant was not busy. Service was not good and we would have ordered more drinks had the server been on the floor. We actually had to talk to manager to make sure our food was coming out - late service made us late to our 8pm show ... food was just basic tacos and sopas and should not have taken over an hour and a half to prepare. Also the food ordered was not correct. My taco had steak and chicken when it was supposed to be chicken and the side of refried beans i ordered was not included... They did take off the food from our bill... but we were not the only people complaining about wait times for food or just the bill. Not sure why the wait times were so bad when not crowded.... Food was good, but did not have much time to enjoy since it made us late to out comedy show. read more

I used to work at the Seelbach (Oakroom and Old Seelbach Bar.) Both establishments had their finger on the pulse daily of what was happening in the city to get an idea of crowd size expectations and demographics (themed drinks, chef specials, etc.) La Terraza is also on 4th street but located very close to the Louisville Palace, Mercury Ballroom, and the Brown Theatre, so it's assumed they would be aware of the entertainment calendar. We had a reservation for 6 people at La Terraza so they knew we were coming. Typically, restaurants have a "theatre menu" of quick meals that will get people out the door for a 7:30pm show. We arrived at the reserved 6pm timeslot and were seated. After flagging down a frustrated waiter, we finally placed a drink-and-food order ("place the entire order while you had the waiter's attention") at 6:30pm. Two basic drinks took 15 minutes to arrive. Our food came out as we were walking out the door at 7:15pm to go take our seats. Other tables had chips and salsa to at least have something on their stomach (we didn't), but they didn't get their food either and walked out with us. It is possible the chef was out sick or stuck in the bridge closure traffic. Whatever the case, it is common practice for restaurants to be up front about this, have a limited menu of things the remaining line cooks can make, or you say "it will be a *very* long wait" so other plans can be made. That is fair for the customers and fair for the wait staff as it sets the mood for the tables that will be served. If you have tickets to a show and are in a hurry, I strongly suggest checking out any of the other establishments on/around 4th St. read more

Had lunch at La Terraza last week after visiting at Norton Hospital. The high rating convinced us to try. Nice looking place. It was a 90* day so we opted to eat inside, instead of the courtyard. Our next impression is the sparse menu. Single page with few options. The next disappointment is that you have to pay $4 for chips & salsa! Not free as in most Mexican restaurants, but I did order and pay. The salsa was good, not the best. My wife had the steak fajita - good but the steak was overcooked and tough. My shrimp cocktail was also good, but was small with small shrimp. Service was good. We left satisfied, but not really impressed. read more

I rarely rarely remember to post on Yelp. BUT I needed to talk about this spot. I travel a lot and am a Mexican food nerd, and this was not only the best food I had in Louisville, it ranks as some of the best Mexican food spots I've been to in a long time (and went back as my final meal in time before flying out). The carnitas were killer, the guacamole super fresh and the jalapeño margaritas dangerously good. The fish tacos were beautifully seasoned with a big generous piece of fish. And the spot was incredibly cleans and everyone so friendly. Please give this place a shot. read more

When we arrived, there was a large party but no other patrons. They told us food would take a little longer due to the large party; we waited a very long time for even chips and salsa. The chips, salsa, and chorizo cheese were good but the meal was very unimpressive once we finally got it. My fish tacos were definitely the worst I've ever had and my boyfriend's food came out cold and also unimpressive. The side was browned avocado and plain, white, overcooked rice. Also we nearly FROZE to death while in the restaurant. Even if the meal were good, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it due to literally shivering! The food is WAY OVERPRICED for what it was!
