Barbacoa plate, handmade tortillas, and consomé. Deliciously good!

My 1st time giving this spot an opportunity, and I'm glad I did because it won't be the last. The location is a little hidden, but definitely worth your business. I ordered the barbacoa plate and it came with 4 handmade tortillas and a consomé plate. The barbacoa was delicious to say the least. The meat was super tender and the flavor was on point. The serving is good for 1 person, I even had leftovers. The consomé was also good and perfect for this rainy weather. They have a salsa bar, that is well stocked and it has different types of salsas for the barbacoa dish or tacos. The place is well kept and super clean. The service was excellent. I'll be returning with my family. Prices on the menu are great.

The Queso Fundido with chorizo is also one of the best! The live band entertainment on Tuesdays changes weekly, which keeps things fun and exciting. Unfortunately, there wasn't a band last Tuesday, but these things happen. Taco Tuesdays can get crowded very quickly, so I definitely recommend making reservations, especially for parties of four or more. Indoor seating fills up fast, and you may be left with outdoor seating. During hot weather, the patio can feel quite humid, and the outdoor chairs can become uncomfortable after sitting for a while. Service is decent and about what you'd expect when the restaurant is busy. Overall, we enjoy coming here with friends for the food, happy hour, and lively atmosphere.

But, they just didn't seem.to have their stuff together. The restaurant was empty, but the hostess seemed frazzled by us coming in and said she'd "see what they had available". We were literally the only people in the restaurant. My buddy and I both ordered the lunch special. The tacos we're decent, the enchilada was similarly good. But, nothing really special. Maybe the atmosphere is more lively at night. Maybe they're cocktails are amazing. I don't know and I'd probably try it again to find out. But, there just wasn't much that impressed me. Nothing offensive. Nothing horrible. Just nothing great.

But some shady charges or maybe we'll call it miscommunication just rubbed me the wrong way. I always order the mole chicken enchiladas and my wife (being vegetarian) asks for the same dish but if the enchiladas can be vegetable or cheese. Apparently this means a 8$ up charge? We've done this many times in the past and always been charged the same price for both. I asked the server at the end "the veggie version is 8$ more expensive than chicken?" And he just shrugged and said yes. Just found it interesting that a meat dish would be 8$ less than a purely cheese/veggie dish. Especially since done this in the past with no issue. I also asked for "hot sauce" for my dish. They brought out a spicier house salsa as the hot sauce...totally understandable and the salsa here is usually free. Apparently it's a 4$ "chipotle sauce" that the waiter did not inform me would be charged. I would've easily just said I want tapatio or no "hot sauce". I used maybe a teaspoon for 4$. I told the waiter this when we questioned the bill and he just shrugged. These may seem like small inconveniences but when they seem like they intentionally don't tell you the details and then when called out about it just kinda shrug it off, it was a disappointing end to an otherwise tasty dinner. We love it here and will certainly be back but it just sucks that I have to be extra cautious & skeptical when ordering from now on.

Despite my harsh critique below, I like this place and will continue to visit. That said, here goes the part that cost a star. I really like crispy potato tacos. Solid shell on the outside, delicious seasoned potatoes and cheese on the inside. I have ordered these a few times this year. Admittedly each time, I ordered out. What I received was soggy, lifeless, half-mooned shaped globs of depression. Today was my last time. I remembered the challenges with these in the past and hoped for the best. I popped the container in the car after picking them up right on time. Same thing. Three observations: 1. The tacos are routinely served with wet ingredients on top. The juices permeate the shell quickly causing it to go soggy. The toppings would be great on the side. Unfortunately, the ordering app I used doesn't have a comment box to request it this way. I did try to move them off when I received it, but it was too late. 2. The potatoes are "gummy" or stodgy according to our friends from the UK. This happens when the potatoes have been cooked too long and results in an undesirable texture. Fluffy and creamy is the goal. 3. More salt, other seasonings, and other ingredients needed. You're getting potatoes boiled and mashed with a whisper of butter and sour cream in there. That's all. Salt brings out the natural flavor. Additional seasonings such smoked paprika, cumin, and garlic as fresh cilantro elevate the flavor. Also, cheese is a must in my book. I tried administering emergency air frying to revive my corn and potato mash when I got home, but alas my efforts were in vain. Again, I really like this place. That said, I'm going with the cheese enchiladas next time.

Honestly I had zero expectations coming here, especially after reading some of the reviews which mostly skew towards good, but the bad ones did have me second guessing my plans, but at this point I was already committed to the idea of dining here. Casa Maguey has a pretty good variety of different offerings. I can't remember each specific dish I tried since there was a lot I tried, but the stewed/braised meats were all very tasty. There was a chicken one with fajitas, stewed/braised beef, and another braised dish with spare ribs. I got a small scoop of rice and scooped up some of the braising sauces to go with the rice. There was a veggie dish that was more cumin forward... I think it was potatoes? Both red and green enchiladas were great. The fresh tortillas really made a difference with the tacos. Very good. And you know I had to get menudo because of the weather. No complaints either. Speaking of complaints, I did have a bit of a surprise in the middle of my meal, but the manager (I'm assuming) took care of the issue. I thought it was handled well and appreciated how they resolved it. Overall I had a great experience here this past Sunday! The staff was friendly, the food was good, price was very reasonable, and the champagne kept flowing (big W!!)
